Scholarships and Other Funding

Paying for graduate school can take many forms. A good place to start is reviewing actual tuition/fees found here. You can also use the estimated cost information found here: Estimated Cost of Attendance.

Then, it is helpful to look into Types of Aid. We've listed some specific resources here, too.

Talk with your adviser if you have questions, especially in regard to total number of credits required to keep financial aid and delay repayment status.

Scholarships

Current students can apply for SEVEN UWRF scholarships listed here. Apply during the Fall semester through the UWRF Financial Aid or application site. Look for announcements sent to the Counseling Program listserv and Facebook pages for deadlines.    

  • Carol Barry Memorial Scholarship
    This scholarship supports a student majoring in the Master of Science in Education in Counseling
    • Must be currently working in the St. Paul, MN Public School District
    • Preference will be given to an applicant working at Como Park Senior High School
  • Jerry Liddell-Pauline McConnell Scholarship
    This scholarship supports graduate students seeking a M.S.E. School Counseling degree. Applicants must provide a brief paragraph that addresses your interest in becoming a school counselor and include skills, experiences, and/or volunteer work that you will bring to the program. Scholarships will be awarded using the following criteria:
    • Must be admitted to the M.S.E. in Counseling program
    • Preference will be given to students who are:
      • Members of an under-represented minority group, or
      • First generation to higher education
  • Vera and Clifford Brainerd Memorial Scholarship
    This scholarship supports graduate students seeking a M.S.E. School Counseling degree. The student must be planning to take Internship within the next 2 semesters (spring or fall). The student must provide a brief personal essay which describes those opportunities the candidate has engaged in to broaden their educational experience, such as:
    1. Affiliation with a School Counseling Professional Organization like WSCA or MSCA
    2. Participation in a recognized student organization at UW-River Falls like the UWRF School Counseling Student Organization
    3. Other profession related non-academic experiences like group work at schools, depression screenings, graduate assistantships, etc.   
       
  • Therese Lachecki Memorial Scholarship
    This scholarship supports graduate students seeking a M.S.E. School Counseling degree. The applicant must have completed at least 1 semester of coursework as a student enrolled in the program. The student must provide a brief personal essay which describes those opportunities the candidate has engaged in to broaden their educational experience and the impact that service to others has, such as:
    1. Ideas surrounding the impact of service in your or others' lives and how that might impact your work as a future school counselor.
    2. Affiliation with a school counseling professional organization like WSCA or MSCA.
    3. Participation in a recognized student organization at UWRF like the UWRF School Counseling Student Association.
    4. Other profession related non-academic experiences like group work at school, depression screening, graduate assistantships, etc.
       
  • Counseling Program Alumni and Friends Scholarship
    This scholarship supports graduate students seeking a M.S.E. School Counseling degree. The applicant must have completed at least 1 semester of coursework as a student enrolled in the program. The student must provide a brief personal essay which describes those opportunities the candidate has engaged in to broaden their educational experience and their ideas around remaining engaged with the counseling profession upon graduation, such as:
    1. Ideas surrounding the importance of collaboration (i.e., Counseling Program Stakeholder Group) and the responsibilities that graduates of the program have in taking lessons from the program and paying them forward (specific example).
    2. Affiliation with a school counseling professional organization like WSCA or MSCA.
    3. Participation in a recognized student organization at UWRF like the UWRF School Counseling Student Association.
    4. Other profession related non-academic experiences like group work at school, depression screening, graduate assistantships, etc. 
       
  • Ann Laufenberg Krupkat Scholarship
    This scholarship supports graduate students seeking a M.S.E. School Counseling degree. The student must be officially accepted into the Counseling Program and have either completed in spring or is currently taking COUN 610: Introduction to School Counseling at the time of application (FALL). The minimum GPA requirement is 2.75. The student must provide a short paragraph as to why you want to become a school counselor and a compelling reason as to why/how this scholarship will impact your success in the program. Additionally, students must indicate whether they have received other scholarships or grants for their graduate work.
     
  • Mary J. Crownhart Scholarship
    This scholarship supports a graduate student in the Counseling and School Psychology program. The student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. The student must exhibit leadership qualities through involvement in professional and other organizations.

Grants

Grants may be an option for you. Currently, UWRF offers the following grants. 

  • Advanced Opportunity Program (AOP) Fellowship
    Who: Minority graduate students or non-minority disadvantaged graduate students 
    Eligibility: Based on African American, Hispanic, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Southeast Asian ethnicity; or being an economically disadvantaged non-minority graduate student. Must be admitted into a degree-seeking graduate program and must be enrolled in at least 2 credits per semester.
    Apply: Deadlines are typically during Spring semester. Please submit the application to the address on the form. 
    Award: Tuition/fee charges (at the WI resident rate) plus an amount for book/supplies each fall and spring semester; summer grants are dependent on remaining funding.
  • American Indian Grants (Federal / State / Tribal)
    State: Wisconsin Indian Student Assistance 
    Tribal Grants: File application with tribe.

Tuition Remission Policy for Out of State and International Students

The purpose of this policy is to determine the conditions under which non-resident domestic and international students may receive tuition remission. Graduate students from out-of-state (not WI, not MN) may received $2000 of tuition remission over the first two semesters and $4000 annually over the next four semesters. To be eligible, graduate students must carry eight or more credits in a semester and maintain a 3.0 or greater GPA, This policy holds for fall/spring semesters only. Financial Aid

The Financial Aid Office for UWRF provides a wealth of information and can assist with questions on funding your graduate studies. Additional educational loans and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid can be obtained here. 

Graduate Assistantships/Student Worker Positions

Each spring semester, the Counseling Program advertizes for 2 graduate assistant positions for the program. These positions start at the beginning of fall semester and run through the entire academic year to the end of spring semester. GAs work 12 hours per week on campus and are paid employees. Duties range from direct work with faculty and prospective students to filing and program maintenance. Join the Counseling Program listserv to find out more.

Loans

Loans require repayment, many times with an interest rate. There are many loans available, but the following is offered through a local bank.
