Collection Summary: This series contains correspondence from the presidencies/chancellorships of James W. Crabtree (1911-1917); Jesse H. Ames (1911, 1917-1946); Eugene H. Kleinpell (1946-1967); Richard J. Delorit (1967-1968), and George R. Field (1968- ).

Most early correspondence (1911-1930) concerns prospective students (applications, inquiries concerning boarding and employment), students, and graduates (recommendations). A number of job applications are also included. Correspondence with men in the military , including a list of River Falls Normal men in the service, dominates the files from 1917-1921. Other items in the series include materials relating to the Smith-Hughes Act and problems at the River Falls Normal School resulting from its passage (1917-1929); correspondence concerning the Basil Stanley affair (1927-1931); correspondence concerning legislation, curriculum change, and salary schedules. After 1930 most of the correspondence is of a formal business nature. Highlights in this portion of the series include correspondence concerning the University Foundation (1948- ); arrangements for guest lecturers; the development of the Graduate School; and transitions from Teachers College to State College (1951) and from State College to State University (1964).
