UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN River Falls

Alumni Stories

Boyd Huppert '84

Stay in motion, there is no step that's too small, just start taking steps. The littlest turn you make could be the path you walk down for the rest of your life. - Boyd Huppert, 1984, Journalism

How did UW-River Falls prepare you for where you are now?
River Falls laid the foundation for my career and created a thirst for learning within me. I knew very little about journalism when I came to UW-River Falls and I found the internship opportunities to be vital to where I am today. While at River Falls, I did a half hour documentary for a radio class that won a national award. That award took me to metro Las Vegas, which led me to landing my first job in the field in Wausau, Wisconsin.

What is something that has surprised you about River Falls?
River Falls has been extremely supportive and I appreciate that. It's been a privilege to work in Minneapolis, just an hour drive from where I grew up and went to college. The warmness of the River Falls community has allowed me to establish both old and new lifelong connections. I enjoy visiting campus and could not have been more honored to receive the Distinguished Alumnus award last year. Never would I have dreamed of receiving such recognition. River Falls continues to be really good to me.

What were you involved in at UW-River Falls?
I was involved in the WRFW student radio station, intramural sports (volleyball and softball) and the on campus Society for Professional Journalists group.
