UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN River Falls

Stallion Equine Class 2018

Animal and Food Science

Horse Breeding Program

At UW-River Falls, we've developed a successful breeding program where students learn to collect stallions, package semen, foal out, and breed mares. They have a unique opportunity to work with internationally respected stallions like Skeets Peppy and, as of March 2019, Lil Ruf Rider.

CAFES re-established the breeding program in 2005 through the generous support of the Wisconsin Agricultural Growth Foundation and many supporters in the equine industry.

Our goal is to provide a unique educational program for our students, while producing top quality performance horses. We are supported solely by donations and revenues received from the sale of our foals at the UWRF Colt Sale.

In March 2019, Lil Ruf Rider "Rider," a 2003 registered Quarter Horse (Lil Ruf Peppy x Hollywood Lolita), arrived at the UW-River Falls Campus Farm from California. He was donated to the UWRF breeding program by McEntire Reining Horses. Rider is a National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) earner of $26,000. Twenty-six of Rider's foals have gone on to earn $93,000 in the NRHA.

In 2018, Assistant Professor of Animal Science Casie Bass, who manages the UWRF breeding program, was awarded a USDA grant for Non-Land Grant Colleges of Agriculture (NLGCA) to fund state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, support research experiences for undergraduate students and develop a summer camp for high school students. The grant activities are focused on investigating the maternal recognition of pregnancy in mares.
