HOW DO I APPLY?
form

Recruitment for the Wisconsin in Scotland (WIS) program begins in September for the following year (Fall, Spring, and Summer).

The Office of International Education/Programs will recruit and select students at each WCWC university (UW-River Falls, UW-Stout or UW-Superior). Applications will be selected based upon appropriate common criteria. At the time of application submission, students must be in good academic standing and have completed their freshman year before participating in the WIS program.

1. There is individual university autonomy in the student selection process for students who do not meet the published guidelines.

2. Students requesting that their minor child/ren accompany them will not be accepted into the WIS program. The number of participants does not allow for a room for a parent and child/ren. The program does not have adequate facilities nor does it offer a support system for students with children.

3. Students must reside at Dalkeith House and, therefore, will not be accepted into the WIS program on a "tuition only" basis.

4. If a student has been suspended from living in campus housing, they will not be allowed to participate in the WIS program.

Is the WIS program right for you?

Peruse this website for additional information about the WIS program and refer to the Campus Contact List to contact the Study Abroad Coordinator at the campus where you plan to apply. The Study Abroad Coordinator can help you determine if the WIS program is right for you.

You can begin the process to apply for acceptance to participate in the WIS program by completing the necessary forms. (The following are general guidelines; complete the various forms when you are instructed to do so by the Study Abroad Coordinator.) Please scroll down and read this entire section. A complete application will include the following:

The following MS Word documents can be completed on-screen. There will be shaded gray areas on each form where you can enter your information. Once you have completed each form, save it on your computer for future use and in case you need to make any revisions before submission.

Personal Statement

After you have completed and saved these forms, you will need to print, sign and date them. These forms will go with the application you submit to the Office of International Programs/Education on your campus.

A required component of the application process is to have an interview with a faculty member whose class you have taken. The results of your interview and your instructor's recommendation will give us an idea about your potential for success in the WIS program. Enter your name as indicated at the top of the following form and forward it as an attachment to the faculty member you will be meeting with prior to your interview. If you are currently a student on a WCWC campus (UW-River Falls, UW-Stout or UW-Superior), please ask the faculty member to send the completed form in an envelope marked “confidential” to the Office of International Education/Programs on your campus. If you are currently a student at a non-WCWC campus, please provide a stamped envelope addressed to the appropriate person/office (where you are submitting your application).

Faculty Recommendation Form

If you are from a non-WCWC campus, the following form must be completed by the Dean of Students at the institution you last attended. Please print this form and complete the top section. After you have completed your section, the form and a stamped envelope addressed to the appropriate person/office (where you are submitting your application) should be taken to the office of the Dean of Students for completion.

Before you schedule a meeting with your Academic Advisor, you should complete the Course Selection Form on-screen for the session you plan to attend. To review a full list of class offerings, you can view the daily class schedule and course descriptions.

Select the courses that will best fit into your academic program. Save, then print this form and bring it with you when you meet with your Academic Advisor. Remember, all WIS participants are required to take the Scottish Culture Colloquium and, in addition, semester participants are required to take one of the following British courses: British History; Introduction to British Civilization; or, The British Gothic Novel (if offered during spring semester). If you are a semester participant and are interested in doing an internship in Scotland, discuss this with your Academic Adviser and find out what campus requirements must be met in order for you to obtain approval to do an internship. (Please see the "Internships" section on this website for WIS requirements.)

Prior to your meeting with your Academic Advisor, complete the top portion of the following form and forward it to your Academic Advisor as an attachment for on-screen completion during your meeting:

Academic Advisor Form

When you have completed all the necessary forms listed above, take your application packet to the Office of International Education/Programs on your campus.

When you receive notification that you have been accepted to participate in the WIS program:

You will need to complete the following forms on-screen:

WIS Admitted Student Form

WIS Medical and Disability Self-Assessment Form

You will also need to print and complete the University of Wisconsin System Uniform Statement of Responsibility, Release, and Authorization to Participate in Study Abroad and Exchange Programs. (This form must be retained in the Office of International Education/Programs on your campus.)

Submit these forms along with four recent passport size photos of yourself to the Office of International Education/Programs on your campus. (Please remember to put your name, campus and term on the back of each photo.)

The Office of International Education/Programs will notify you when the WIS student orientation will be held on your campus before your departure. It is very important that you attend this session. It will give you an opportunity to meet fellow WIS participants and find out more specific information about the program (i.e., travel information, the schedule for your session, what you need to bring with you, etc.). Each of the campus contact sites has a collection of materials related to the WIS program and travel abroad that you should examine at your convenience.

Other things to stay on top of during this time are Financial Aid, if it applies to you, and applying for your passport if you do not already have one. Also, Wisconsin residents may be eligible for a study abroad grant.
