What is sustainable community development?
- Acknowledges that economic, environmental and social issues are interrelated and that these issues should be addressed "holistically."
- Recognizes that the built environment must be in harmony with a sense of place and belonging to the native ecosystem.
- Understands the consequences of dependency on a fossil fuel based economy and begins to shift to carbon neutral, renewable energy sources.
- Considers the full environmental, economic and social impacts/costs of development and community operations.
- Understands its natural, cultural, historical and human assets and resources and acts to protect and enhance them.
- Fosters multi-stakeholder collaboration and citizen participation across all social and economic delineations.
- Promotes resource conservation, pollution prevention, and closed loop recycling of all biologic and industrial materials.
- Focuses on improving community health and quality of life based on the needs of children.
- Acts to create both self-sufficiency, and value-added products and services in the local economy.
