SPS Meeting Minutes

News and Notes from the October 30, 2007 SPS meeting
  • Annual Can Sat competition. If you are interested in building a little satellite for this competition, you must claim your interest by TOMORROW. The write-ups are due in the spring. There is a packet of details on the Seminar room post up board.
  • Calendar competition. Has anybody else entered the calendar competition besides Jen and Tyler?
  • Volleyball. If you are still interested in playing on our intramural volleyball team, talk to Tyler to see about getting signed up.
  • Housekeeping. Since the seminar room gets so much use throughout any given day, we are asking that we reduce the extra workload on our custodian and make it more pleasant for others wishing to use the room by picking up after ourselves. This involves throwing away empty packages, taking home dirty dishes, not leaving text books and notebooks strewn amongst the room, and so on.
  • Holmes Comet. Last night we were able to take a picture of the Holmes comet. It was so bright that we are thinking that maybe it fragmented. You can see it with a pair of binoculars, or by checking out www.spaceweather.com.
  • New Richmond High School visit today. We showed them the trebuchet, bed of nails, liquid nitrogen, the sun telescope, and the basketball drop with an egg. Although we tried to do the drop from the observation deck, we found that our aim needs a little bit of work, as does the reaction time when throwing an egg into a bed sheet.
  • Membership Drive. You need to get signed up and notify Dr. B by the end of the month, which happens to be tomorrow night!!! Two of the phabulous prizes that were discussed today were a Freddy Falcon watch and a usb laser printer that still works!
  • Shirt Designs. We will be offering them in multiple colors, which will soon be decided. The design itself is almost ready for printing.
  • Fall competition. We are for sure doing solid fuel rockets, as the models were delivered today! We ordered 48 kits, so this is a first come, first serve competition. The cost of the kit is $10 to allot for prize money. There is a clipboard to sign up for the competition in the seminar room, and make sure you do it by Monday, November 12th or before we run out of kits, whichever happens first. We are thinking that the launch day will be Thursday, November 15th at either the intramural field or the soccer field. If anybody would like to help in the construction of an altitude calculating device or help with making the software work for it, let Dr. B know.
  • Trebuchet refurbishing. The projectile guide track has been replaced, but we're tossing around ideas for paint/stain. We should get it done, though, before the weather turns bad for us.
  • Field trip. Still thinking about going to the Bakken Museum on a Thursday night.
  • Pre-engineering Society. They are going to hold a special re-election for secretary because of a class conflict (silly pe classes). They also cleaned the pond last night.
  • Demo. Our demo today was the basketball with egg (tennis ball) on top. It was decided it would be good to practice this demo since we would be doing it for New Richmond later on in the day.
  • Minutes taken by Jen Happy Halloween Everybody!!! [an error occurred while processing this directive]
