News and Notes from the October 16, 2007 SPS meeting
Here are the notes from October 9th!
SPS calendar. The new calendar is posted in the seminar room with yet
another contest. Find the five SPS partnerships (hint...they are in
yellow...the ONLY five in yellow) and email sps@aip.org with those five
and which one is more meaningful to you to win a prize.
Observing. This week the weather looks a little bleak, but keep your
eyes open for an opportunity!
Zone 9. There will be a Zone 9 meeting at Marquette University in
Milwaukee October 26/27. Dr. Madsen, Dr. Cho, and possibly Dr. B will be
going. If you would like to go you should make that decision within a few
days and let Dr. B know. So far Arron Lemmer has shown interest.
Next year there will be a joint Zone 9 and Zone 11 meeting held HERE at
UWRF.
Volleyball. There is a clipboard in the seminar room to sign up for the
intramural volleyball league if you are interested. Please only sign up
if you are actually going to attend the games. Last year we had quite the
headache with people not showing up for games. We do need someone to be
the team captian who can attend the games and a captain's meeting October
24th at 7pm. The season runs from October 29 to December 13.
Outreach. Think if you would like to volunteer for the New Richmand
kids. That will be Tuesday October 30 between 1:00 and 2:00 pm. They didn't
attend science day, so we don't have to worry about that stuff overlapping.
We also suggested to think about Big Brothers Big Sisters. We can do that
demo either this semester or next.
Membership drive. We are now up to 7 new members and 11 renewals. Some
of the prizes that were shown today were a desk alarm caddy, a box of 280
Physics experiments, and...the HP graphing calculator.
Shirt design. To vote for the shirts we will be emailing our #1 choice
to Bridget at bridget.onan@uwrf.edu. Please, do not spam her. Make sure
your votes are in by 11:59pm Monday, October 22nd so we can have the votes
counted for that Tuesday's meeting. Also, should we re-offer the 'shift
happens' hoodie with smaller lettering on the front?
Fall Competition Ideas. It seems like rockets are the main recurring
theme for the competition. We did have a suggestion for solid fuel paper
airplanes, tho (funny). There are a few launching devices floating around
with our members. We will have to compile a list of rules to follow, and
safety will be a must! This is probably going to be a group project.
Chris Feld is going to research prices of rocket equipment.
Fun event. The Bakken Museum is open until 8pm on Thursdays, and there
is enough interest. There is a $5 admission cost for students. Stay tuned.
Pre-engineering Society. They want to help out a poor villeage in Africa
to develop a way to dry mangos without the use of electricity. Any ideas?
They are also going to clean up their pond Monday, and are meeting at 6pm
in the seminar room before departing.
Trebuchet team. We need to repair the projectile track, possibly buy a
quick release, paint/stain it, and possibly find a way to mount it on
blocks for storage without having to stress and lift it up onto the
blocks. We have some volunteers, but if you are interested in helping,
contact Dr. B.
Demo. We had the Ball in a Cup demo today. Ann and Bonnie were almost
taken out by the support. When a board is propped up at an angle with a
cup attached to the top and a golf tee at the very end (high point) you
can calculate where on the board the cup needs to be to catch a ball at
the end of the golf tee due to the angular acceleration. Other ways to
find the location for the cup were suggested. Watch out for this problem
coming up, students from Phys 161!
