SPS Meeting Minutes

News and Notes from the May 1, 2008 SPS meeting
  • Play. Go and see "Look Back in Anger." It runs tonight, tomorrow, and Saturday.
  • CAS "Block Party." Will be held TOMORROW, Friday, May 2nd to celebrate graduating seniors and recognize faculty and student awards. It will start at 3 pm with recognition of graduating senior honors, and then gets even more informal with a band until 5:30. Graduating seniors get a free t-shirt! If it is raining the event will be held indoors in the UC.
  • Observing. There will be a possible observing next week. Talk at 9 pm by Dr. Korenic "A Star by Any Other Name - Origins of Star Names." Open observing would start at 9:30pm.
  • Election results. President: Bridget Onan Vice-President: Matt Blodgett Secretary: Jen Lieber Treasurer: David Johnson There originally was a tie for treasurer by Chris Feld and David Johnson, but an impromptu re-vote was held during the meeting.
  • Banquet Follow-up. Food was good. Talk was ok.
  • "Mars3D" and "Sun3D" screening and Q&A from last Monday. Feedback: too much talking between movies, would have been better in 3D, too much art, not enough science.
  • Zone meeting follow-up. The zone report is completed and sent in to the National Office. It is also linked on the website if you would like to take a look. How to pay the bills still needs to be finalized - the alumni account will be vital.
  • Pre-engineering. The pond cleanup went well, with a knife and hubcap as souvenirs. Lee's venison burgers were delicious.
  • Science Outreach. We need to do something with our SOCK. Could we go and visit the RF Public Montessori Academy? Afternoons would be best, but what day? Tuesday or Thursday during finals? So far Jen, Lindsey, and Matt C have shown interest in going.
  • Picnic. This is happening Wednesday, May 7th (NEXT WEEK!!!). Joe Fredricks will be deep-frying a turkey, Dustin Clark will be bringing a big grill with help from Andrew L. We have more than enough plates and utensils, but we will need to have (a) volunteer(s) for a shopping trip for burgers/brats/stuff. Remember to bring your fun outdoor games. If you would like to bring a dish to pass, let Dr. B know what it is you would like to bring.
  • Sigma Pi Sigma Congress poster. Congress will be held at Fermi Lab in Illinois and will be about scientific citizenship. The official registration date is in June, and the event itself will be November 6, 7, 8. Dr. B will look into how official the registration date is. There won't be much funding from SPS for the event.
  • Demo. We brought some holograms from Dr. Korenic and one from the distant past (from when Dr. B was a student!)
