SPS Meeting Minutes

News and Notes from the April 24, 2008 SPS meeting
  • Elections TODAY!!! Voting closes today at 3:30, with the results being announced at the Banquet (and at the next meeting for those not attending).
  • Announcements: A mathematics seminar will be held THIS AFTERNOON at 3:30 by Chuck and John O. Go see the percussion ensemble concert tonight and cheer for Bridget and Lindsey. Also, go see Matt in the play "Look Back in Anger." It opens this week and closes next. Big Brothers Big Sisters sent us a thank-you note as did the McCann's for the baby gifts. There will be a Breakdance Fest at 7pm Wednesday in the Falcon Center. In place of a boring ceremony, there will be a CAS "Block Party" on Friday, May 2nd to celebrate for graduating seniors and recognize faculty and give awards. Talk to Devin for more information.
  • Zone Meeting Report. The total cost ran us about $2750. When the report gets sent in, we'll get another $250 from National. The total income including registration fees was about $1250. Our request for Single Event Funding was denied, so no money from the Student Organizations Committee. We can kick in some money and get the rest from the Foundation account, supported by donations from the alumni. (Remember that when YOU are alums!) James did a rough draft of the report, which gets us started. If you have photos that were taken of the event, send them to Dr. B.
  • Pre-Engineering. The bridge testing was held. Nick Iverson came in first place holding 483 pounds before breaking (the bridge was only 3 Newtons), and Jay Anderson came in second holding 403 pounds before breaking. Don't forget about the pond cleanup and cookout! A clipboard is up in 113. If you signed up to come and bring stuff, please follow through with your commitment!
  • Physics Banquet (and Sigma Pi Sigma induction). This is TOMORROW, April 25th, 2008. We have meals reserved for 75 people. We should get to the Gausthaus at 6pm, with dinner at 6:30. It should get done by 9. You can view a map at http://www.gasthausbavarianhunter.com/directions.html . From that site you can get directions to the Gausthaus from River Falls or any other location you chose to start from. Look for a clipboard for carpools.
  • Spring Picnic. It will be held on Wednesday May 7th. Joe F will deep fry a turkey/donuts. Dustin Clark can bring in a big grill (Andrew offered to help haul it). A clipboard will be coming soon. We think that everyone who has bocce ball sets should bring them so we can have lots of different games going. We should also have other games to play too.
  • Movies. "Mars 3D"and "Sun 3D" (in 2D) will be shown and discussed by the producer on Monday, April 28th, probably starting at 2pm in the Kinnic theater.
  • Should we still do a show for Montessori? When?
  • Graduating members of Sigma Pi Sigma: Tell Dr. B if you will be marching for graduation because you get to wear special cords.
  • Demo: 2-way mirror. When you adjust the lights on the special glass, you can see either your reflection, the person on the other side of the mirror, or a mix of both!
