News and Notes from the March 27, 2008 SPS meeting
Announcements and Reminders. International Study Abroad Stipend
Applications for Summer and Fall 2008 are due by March 28: TOMORROW!!!
Physics with the Twins. Thursday April 3. Time to decide who can
go: there is a sign-up and an email was sent out with more information
Monday.
We have ballots for the upcoming Zone and national elections, but will
wait to vote until after the zone meeting.
Zone Meeting Planning. Check out the website!
www.uwrf.edu/sps/zonepage.htm It's time to register! The $5 fee might
help you stick with the commitment to attend. Our goal is to have at
least 40 UWRF people register and attend. LOCAL PROMOTION IS NEEDED: a
lot of physics people don't get or pay attention to this email, so we need
to make personal contact, like talking to your physics classes for
example. We also need some "telemarketers" to contact a few chapters to
exhort them to come. We are responsible for contacting 10 chapters. Talk
to Dr. B if you are willing to help. We got our zone meeting kit with
lots of goodies in it, including the future faces of physics jeopardy,
t-shirts to give away, a nova special DVD, physics sign language, a raised
surface moon, a book by Einstein, buttons, and more. The menu for dinner
and lunch have been set, but since a dozen donuts at the UC will run us
$9, a continental breakfast will be held in the seminar room, which
means we will need people to volunteer for some shopping, set-up, serving,
and clean up. If it is clear Friday night we can open up the observatory
if we have enough people trained to work the telescopes. If you are
trained and are planning on attending, let Dr. B know. If the weather is
bad, Dr. Korenic has offered to do a planetarium show. Is anybody willing
to offer crash space? Also, the schedule of events needs to be firmed up
and published.
Spring Picnic. The date has been changed to Wednesday, May 7 since the
Dean has scheduled a meeting for Dr. B on Tuesday. Joe also offered to
bring in a turkey broiler!
Bowl for Kids Sake. They have enough people signed up to bowl, but are
in need of donations. Every dollar counts!
Pre-engineering. They talked about finalizing the dates on the popsicle
bridge competition. The popsicles should be in next week, with payment on
delivery. There is a sign-up sheet in the seminar room to go visit the
UW-Madison engineering department. Talk with your professors if you are
planning on going to the Medical Devices Conference. There was also talk
about going to tour the RF power plant.
Demo. Chris quick built up a makeshift hovercraft. It has been decided
that to build one big enough to hold people would be of interest. A
separate email will be sent out with directions on how to build one.
