SPS Meeting Minutes

News and Notes from the February 21, 2008 SPS meeting
  • Zone meeting. We need people to sign up! Very soon we should be getting out a flyer to send to the 90+ chapters in Zones 9 and 11. Dr. B. talked to people from Madison about sending up their grad school recruiting booth. Now to talk to the U of M and see if they'll respond as well!
  • Physics Help Room. We need a little more help, especially Tuesdays from 12-2. $14 per hour.
  • Nanotech Speaker. There is a Nanotech speaker at UW-Stout tonight. Interested in going? It starts at 6:30pm at MCH 290. The title of the speech is Nanotechnology: Recent Developments and Some Perspectives on the Future.
  • Spring Banquet. April 25. Invitation letters have been sent out to those eligible for Sigma Pi Sigma. It is open to everyone, not just those being inducted! Guest speaker Dr. Jan Yarrison-Rice from Miami University of Ohio. We will be confirming our reservation at the Gasthaus in Stillwater. The Officers scouted the banquet hall last night and things looked good!
  • Meeting with a meal. 11 votes were casted (not very many). It looks as if we have possibilities for Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
  • Fund-raising. Book/bake/walking taco sale is February 25ththis Monday! We need a few more people to help out with staffing the table and cleanup and such. A supply run will be made, and the meat preparation will be at Bridget/Cadie/Ann/Shawntel's house Sunday night. Andrew will try and get us a box of gloves for serving food.
  • Food Sale Training. For any organizations wishing to hold food sales, there is a mandatory training session March 4th from 6-8pm. Jen and Andrew volunteered to go. There will also be a make-up session March 5th. We will only be allowed to hold 3 food sale events per academic year, and after March 5th a food sale can be shut down without having gone thru training prior to the sale, resulting in a suspension from food sales for one academic year.
  • Design for Medical Devices Conference. April 15-17 in the Twin Cities. Early Bird registration is March 1. If you are interested in attending, contact the Pre-Engineering Society.
  • Outreach. We have possibilities to get involved with Bowl for Kids Sake again this year and the Relay for Life. Bowl for Kids Sake will have a superhero theme this year, and Relay for Life will have a western theme. Signups will be posted.
  • Pre-engineering. Thinking about a popsicle bridge design competition, and maybe challenging SPS!
  • Spring Picnic. We are thinking Tuesday, May 6. Now we just need to check and see if the shelter is available that day.
  • Demo. We brought out the older Tesla coil today, and even noticed that when it gets cranked and the points get separated it starts to arc in places it maybe shouldn't!
