News and Notes from the February 7, 2008 SPS meeting
Announcements.
Public observing will attempt to be held the week of February 11 ...first
clear day.
Deadline for national SPS scholarships is February 15.
Deadline for running for Associate Zone Councilor is February 15. Go
Bridget!!!
More summer REU opportunities are being added to the folder.
Zone meeting planning. The meeting will be held April 11 & 12
Crash housing? We will advertise that we have it.
A clipboard will be put in the seminar room for those who are willing to
help out.
Spring Banquet. April 25. 18 eligible for induction. An idea for a
food eatery is the Gasthaus which is in the west side of Stillwater. Let
Dr. B know if you come up with any other ideas for a place to hold it ASAP
so it can be looked into.
Meeting time. Noon at Thursday is the 'best' time for a regular meeting,
but we are thinking about doing a meeting once a month in the evening (pot
luck!) for those not able to make our noon meetings...and plus it is a
nice twist. 5 or 5:30? An email should get sent out requesting
times/dates that work best.
Fundraiser. We are thinking the last Monday in February for a walking
taco/bake/books-n'stuff sale. Sound good?
HS Physics with the Minnesota Twins. April 3-we are going to say that we
are willing to help out, so Dr. B will contact them and get us some more
info.
Tom Johnson. Tom is safety officer for Monticello (spelling?) Nuclear
Power plant, and will be coming to campus tomorrow afternoon to have a
chat and see about hiring some help (graduating people).
Nanobowl on YouTube. Check out the SPS videos on YouTube!!! keyword:
nanobowl
Keep the spring picnic in mind and come in with dates that work.
Levitating bag ring trick. Dr. B asks that we practice and play with the
wands and rings to make them levitate.
Demo. Brand new Van De Graff generator!!! It kicks out 350,000-400,000
volts and runs so much more quiet than the old one. There is a whirligig
attachment that can be purchased or made to put on top. We made a chain
of people to see how much shock we could get. It worked decent with 4ish
people, but 6+ and we lost the feeling.
