Zeien Earns All-American Honors at NCAA Meet

Nick Zeien earned NCAA All-American honors for the third time in his career with an eighth place finish in the 800-meter dash at the NCAA national outdoor meet on Saturday at Marietta, Ohio, College.

Zeien, a sophomore from Hastings, Minn., finished in 1:52.33 to place eighth and earn the All-American honors. He ran a school record 1:51.08 on Friday to qualify for the finals. Zeien is now a three-time NCAA All-American – he also earned the honors in the 800 in the 2008 and 2009 NCAA indoor championships. Emmanuel Bofa from Whitworth University won the title on Saturday with a time of 1:48.77

Kim Altenhofen missed earning All-American honors by just ¼ of an inch. Altenhofen, a senior from Marathon, Wis., had a best throw of 42-11 ½. The eighth place finisher had a best throw of 42-11 ¾, to edge Altenhofen for All-American honors. Monique Riddick from Montclair State won the event with a throw of 51-9.

On Friday Colleen Kopel finished 14 th in the heptathlon scoring 4,264 points.

UW-Oshkosh won the men's team title scoring 46 points and Wartburg won the women's team title with 52 points.

Kopel Finishes 14th in Heptathlon;
Zeien Qualifies for Finals at NCAA Meet

Colleen Kopel finished 14th in the heptathlon and Nick Zeien qualified for the finals in the 800-meter dash on Friday at the NCAA national outdoor meet held at Marietta, Ohio, College.

Zeien, a sophomore from Hastings, Minn., qualified for the finals in the 800. He ran a school record 1:51.08 to qualify for Saturday's finals. He finished second in the first heat and has the seventh fastest time entering tomorrow's finals. The race will be run at 2:50 p.m., on Saturday. Zeien is a two-time NCAA All-American – he earned the honorsin the 800 in the 2008 and 2009 NCAA indoor championships.

Kopel finished the two-day event with 4,264 points.

Kopel started the second day with a ninth place finish in the long jump. She leaped 16-8 and earned 581 points. She moved up to ninth place of the 20 competitors. Kopel then finished sixth in the javelin with a throw of 115-8. She earned 577 points and moved up to seventh place in the competition. The last event was the 800-meter run and Kopel finished 20 th in the race in a time of 2:50.66. She earned 457 points.

Kopel, a junior from Stillwater, Minn., started the day in 10 th place with 2,649 points. She was the highest finisher of the two WIAC competitors in the event.

The event winner was Ashley Huston of Hardin-Simmons who scored 5,242 points.

On Saturday Kim Altenhofen will compete in the trials and finals of the shot put. That action starts at noon.

Kopel in 10th Place After First Day of Heptathlon
Competition at NCAA Meet

Colleen Kopel is in 10th place after the first day of the heptathlon competition at the NCAA national outdoor meet being held at Marietta, Ohio, College.

Kopel finished the four events with 2,649 points.

She opened with a fourth place finish in the 100 hurdles. She ran the race in 15.1 and earned 828 points. She then placed 18th in the high jump with a leap of 4-9 ½ and earned 577 points. She was in 10th place after the two events. Kopel moved up to eighth place overall with a seventh place finish in the shot put. She threw 34-2 ¾ to earn 558 points. She finished the day with a 14th place finish in the 200-meter dash. She earned 686 points and finished in 27.31.

Kopel is in the running for a higher finish in the final standings. She is just one point out of ninth place, 23 points out of eighth, 30 points out of seventh and 35 points out of sixth place. The first day leader is Ashley Huston of Hardin-Simmons who scored 3,104 points.

On Friday the second day of the competition starts at noon and Kopel will compete in the long jump, javelin and the 800-meter dash.

Also on Friday Nick Zeien will run in the 800-meter day preliminaries at 4:40 p.m. If he qualifies for the finals, he will run in that at 2:50 p.m., on Saturday. Also on Saturday Kim Altenhofen will compete in the trials and finals of the shot put. That action starts at noon.

Zeien, Altenhofen, Kopel Will Compete in NCAA Outdoor Championships

Falcons Nick Zeien, Kim Altenhofen and Colleen Kopel will all compete in the NCAA outdoor national meet which will be held this coming week at Marietta, Ohio, College. The meet will run Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Zeien will compete in the 800-meter event with the trials scheduled for Friday at 4:40 p.m. The finals will be at 2:50 p.m., on Saturday. Zeien qualified with a time of 1:51.55 he ran at the Minnesota Open on May 8. He has the 12th best time in the country and there are 17 runners in the race. Zeien, a sophomore from Hastings, Minn., is a two-time NCAA All-American. He earned the honors in the past two NCAA indoor championships in the 800. He finished sixth with a time of 1:55.22 in 2008 and fifth with a time of 1:54.99 in 2009.

Altenhofen, a senior from Marathon, Wis., qualified in the shot put event. The trials and finals will be held at noon on Saturday. Altenhofen qualified with a throw of 45-7 she had at the La Crosse NCAA Qualifier on Thursday. She has the sixth best throw in the country and there are 18 competitors in the event.

Kopel, a junior from Stillwater, Minn., will compete in the heptathlon. She qualified for the event when she scored 4,412 points at the UWRF Multi Qualifier that was held last week. She has the 11th best point total in the nation and there will be 20 competitors in the event. The event will be held on Thursday and Friday. The competition starts at 1 p.m., on Thursday. Kopel will compete in the 100 hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200-meter dash. On Friday the action starts at noon and Kopel will compete in the long jump, javelin and the 800-meter dash. Kopel won the event at the WIAC Meet held in early May.

The Falcon women won last year's NCAA outdoor national meet team title scoring 35 points.

Falcons Compete in Final Day of UWRF Multi Event

The two-day UWRF Multi concluded today with seven Falcons competing.

Colleen Kopel won the heptathlon with a NCAA provisional meet qualifying score of 4412. This was the best score of the year for Kopel. Maranda Dohrn competed in the event for the first time this year and finished with 3397 points. Sarah Novak scored 3257 points and Megan Rinke scored 2708 points

Joe Weinrich placed second in the decathlon with a total score of 5192 and teammate Kevin Rengo finished fourth with 4900. This was a season best for Rengo. Carl Calabrese also competed and finished with 4635 points.

Falcons Compete in La Crosse, UWRF Multi Meets

Several members of the Falcon men's and women's track & field teams competed in the La Crosse NCAA Qualifying and UWRF Multi qualifying meets on Thursday.

Five Falcons had season best efforts in La Crosse. For the women, Kim Altenhofen had a season best in the shot with a toss of 45-7. Jenny Aronson had a season best in the long jump with a leap of 18-5. Leah Korf had a season best in the 800 with a time of 2:16.11 and Tasha Arnold had a season best in the 400 with a time of 58.27. Alex Zeien had a season best time in the 800 in 1:53.64.

Arnold also ran a 26.79 in the 200 and Reed finished in 14.85 in the 100 hurdles. Megan Rasmussen finished the 400 hurdles in 1:05.76. Clai Catto leaped 6-4 ¾ in the high jump and Scott Degner ran the 1,500 in 4:01.03.

Seven Falcons competed in the first day of the UWRF Multi meet. Joe Weinrich totaled 2,882 points, Kevin Rengo 2,617 and Carl Calabrese finished with 2,395. For the women, Colleen Kpel finished with 2,623 points, Maranda Dohrn had 2,201, Sarah Novak 1,924 and Megan Rinke 1,662.  

The second and final day of the UWRF Multi will be on Friday at Ramer Field with action starting at noon.

Falcons Compete at Minnesota Open;
Zeien Sets 800 Record

The Falcon men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Minnesota Open on Friday at Bierman Track on the University of Minnesota campus. No team scores were kept.

Nick Zeien broke the River Falls school record in the 800-meter run at the meet. Zeien's time of 1:51.55 bested the previous record of 1:51.97 set by Jon Ejnik in 1990. Zeien finished fifth in the race.

Nine members of the men's team cracked the top 10 in an individual event, led by Michael Woodward who finished second in the triple jump (45-5).

Josh Dietze finished third in the 110-meter hurdles (15.38), Scott Degner finished fourth in the 1500-meter run (3:58.39), Clai Catto placed fourth in the high jump (6-5), and Jim Walrath placed ninth in the hammer throw (141-6).

In the 400-meter dash, Paul Schriener finished fifth (50.26), Lucas Mueller finished sixth (50.29), and Dan Rodewald finished seventh (50.68).

The Falcon men also placed second in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 43.08.

Jessica Reed won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.26 to pace the Falcon women's team.

Jenny Aronson placed second in the long jump (18-3) and Tasha Arnold finished third in the 400-meter dash (58.92).

Carly Eggert placed second in the 5000-meter run (18:32.87) while teammate Christine Peters finished fourth (19:07.35).

To round out the top 10 Falcon finishers, Ahsley Graef placed fourth in the 3000-meter steeplechase (12:47.02), Kim Altenhofen finished fourth in the shot put (42-2 3/4), Shannon Amans finished fifth in the hammer throw (138-5), Megan Rasmussen placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.77), and Denise Nelson placed seventh in the discus throw (123-5).

The Falcons will next compete at the La Crosse NCAA Qualifier on Thursday. The athletes who qualify for nationals will then run at the NCAA meet which will be May 21-23 in Marietta, Ohio.

Men Place Eighth, Women Fifth at
WIAC Track & Field Meet

The men's team placed eighth and the women's team fifth at the WIAC track & field championships held Friday and Saturday at UW-Oshkosh.

The men finished with 38 points and scored 34 points on Saturday. The women finished with 78 points and picked up 57 points on Saturday.

Clai Catto was the men's team's top finisher on Saturday with a third place finish in the high jump. He leaped 6-6 ¾. The Falcons picked up four more team points when Michael Woodward placed fifth with a leap of 6-4 ¾. Woodward also placed fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 46-1 ½.

Brothers Nick and Alex Zeien finished five-six in the 800. Nick finished in 1:57.93 and Alex was just behind in 1:57.97.

Joe Weinrich placed sixth in the decathlon with 5,367 points. He won the high jump with a leap of 6-2 and the discus with a throw of 113-9.

The Falcon 4x100 relay finished fifth in 42.97 and the 4x400 team finished fourth in 3:20.92.

For the women, Colleen Kopel paced the Falcons with a first place finish in the heptathlon. She scored 4,267 points to outdistance the second place finisher by 44 points. Kopel's effort was an NCAA provisional qualifying effort. Falcon Sarah Novak also picked up a team point with an eighth place finish.

Kopel won three of the seven events. She won the javelin throw with a 102-5 effort, the 200-meter dash in 27.87 and the 100-meter hurdles in 15.47. She placed second in the high jump with a leap of 5-2 and second in the long jump with a leap of 17-1 ¼. Novak placed second in the shot put with a throw of 32-7 ¾ and second in the 200-meter dash in 23-seconds.

The Falcons picked up 13 team points with three place winners in the 100-meter hurdles. Jessica Reed won the event with a time of 14.82 which is a NCAA national meet provisional qualifying time. Samantha Nyre took seventh place with a time of 15.64 and Kopel ran a 15.66 to finish eighth.

Maranda Dohrn placed second in the high jump with a leap of 5-3 ¼. She also placed seventh in the shot put with a toss of 40-4 ¾.

Kim Altenhofen finished fourth in the shot with a toss of 42-4. Her effort was a NCAA meet provisional qualifying throw.

Carly Eggert placed fourth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:28.97. Two Falcons also placed in the 400-meter hurdles. Megan Rasmussen placed sixth in 1:05.15 and Nyre came back to place eighth in 1:06.84.

Tasha Arnold placed seventh in the 400 in 1:00.19 and Leah Korf was seventh in the 800 in 2:20.09.

The Falcon 4x100 relay finished sixth in 50.85 and the 4x400 relay finished seventh in 4:05.24.

Kopel and Reed both earned All-WIAC first team and Dohrn and Kopel (javelin on Friday) earned All-WIAC second team recognitions with their first and second place finishes.

Several Falcons will compete in a series of Last Chance meets in the coming weeks in an effort to qualify for the NCAA Div. III National Meet which will be held May 21-23 at Marietta College in Ohio.

Falcons Compete in First Day at WIAC Meet

The Falcon men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the first day of the WIAC Championships on Friday in Oshkosh.

The women’s team finished the day in fifth place with 21 total points, while the men’s team is in eighth place with four points.

Four Falcons placed in events that were completed in Friday’s competition. From the women’s team, Colleen Kopel finished second in the javelin throw (117-7), Jenny Aronson finished third in the long jump with a leap of 18-3 ¼, and Christine Peters finished fourth in the 10,000-meter run (39:38.18). From the men’s team Chad Ernst finished eighth in the 10,000-meter run (31:54.67).

A number of Falcons qualified for the event finals on Saturday with strong showings in the prelims. From the men’s team, Josh Dietze finished seventh in the 110-meter hurdles prelim (15.28). Nick Zeien finished sixth (1:54.62) and Alex Zeien placed ninth (1:55.63) in the 800-meter run prelim to qualify for the final on Saturday.

The women’s team had seven qualifiers for event finals on Saturday. Natasha Arnold placed eighth in the 400-meter dash prelim (59.90), Leah Korf finished seventh in the 800-meter run prelim (2:20.54), Megan Rasmussen finished third in the 400-meter hurdles prelim (1:05.78), and Samantha Nyre placed eighth in the 400-meter hurdles prelim (1:08.25) to qualify for Saturday’s finals.

Also, three Falcons moved on to Saturday’s final in the 100-meter hurdles. Jessica Reed won the prelims (14.75), Coleen Kopel finished sixth (15.42), and Nyre placed ninth (15.78).
The Falcon men’s 4x800 meter relay team placed sixth (8:08.28) and the women’s 4x800 meter relay team placed seventh (10:02.84) in Friday’s action.

The second day of the WIAC Championships will get underway at 9 a.m., on Saturday.

Women Finish Third at Macalester Invitational

The Falcon women's track and field team competed at the Macalester Invitational on Saturday and earned a third place finish with 111.5 total points.

Two Falcons won an event at the meet. Carly Eggert topped the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:52.2 and Jessica Reed won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.49 in the finals.

The Falcons showcased a number of athletes who placed well in multiple events. Maranda Dohrn and Caitlin Brendum each had an especially busy day for the Falcons placing in three different events. Dohrn finished third in the shot put (38-6 ¾), fifth in the long jump (15-6), and eighth in the high jump (5-0 ¼) while Brendum finished second in the hammer throw (151-4), fourth in the javelin throw (94-9), and eighth in the shot put (36-7).

Megan Rasmussen finished third in the 400-meter hurdles (1:05.1) and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (17.1). Denise Nelson finished third in the discus throw (131-2) and seventh in the javelin throw (94-9).

Kali Meurer finished fifth in the 400-meter dash (1:01.2) and Amanda Marske placed eighth (1:02.71). Meurer also tied for sixth place in the 200-meter dash with teammate Tasha Arnold. Each finished with a time of 27.29.

Jenny Aronson finished third in the 100-meter dash (13.03) and teammate Becca Goldman placed ninth (13.82).

Kim Altenhofen finished fourth in the shot put (38-4 ¾) and Kayla Hillman finished fourth in the pole vault (9-10 ½). Shannon Amans finished fifth in the hammer throw (133-6) and Luciana Murillo placed eighth (128-2).

Two Falcons placed in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Bridget Holmes finished fourth (13:56.53) and Natalie Conrad finished fifth (14:03.63).

The Falcon 4x100 meter relay team finished second with a time of 50.22.

The Falcon men's and women's teams will both next compete in the WIAC Championships on Friday and Saturday at UW-Oshkosh.

Relay Team Sets Record at Drake Relays

The Falcon men's 4x800 relay team of Indy Liljevall, Nick Zeien, Scott Degner and Alex Zeien shattered the school record today with a time of 7:39.42 at the Drake Relays.

The Falcons finished fifth in the event.

The previous record was 7:50.64 set by Ben Kirmse, Kevin McDonough, Scott Degner and Dan Kessenich in 2006.

Falcon Men Place 11th at Macalester Invite

April 22, 2009

The Falcon men's track team competed at the Macalester Invitational in St. Paul, Minn., on Wednesday evening and finished 11th with 29 total team points.

Michael Woodward placed second in the triple jump for the Falcons with a leap of 44-feet. Josh Dietze finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.38) and Clai Catto finished fourth in the high jump (6-3 1/4).

Other notable finishers for the Falcons included Ricky Hoffman placing seventh in the 3000-meter steeplechase (9:57.79) and Neil Skoog placing eighth (10:01.38), Scott Bowman finishing eighth in the 5,000-meter run (16:19.89) and Jim Walrath finishing ninth in the discus throw (132-2).

The top relay teams placed sixth in the 4x100 meter relay (43.46) and seventh in the 4x400 meter relay (3:29.07).

On Friday at 10:58 a.m., the 4x800 meter relay team of Alex Zeien, Nick Zeien, Indy Liljevall, and Scott Degner will run at the Drake Relays.

The full men's team will compete on May 1-2 at the WIAC Meet at UW-Oshkosh. Events will start at 11 a.m., on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The Falcon women's team will compete in the Macalester Invitational on Saturday with action starting at 10 a.m.

Falcons Compete at Esten Challenge

The men’s team placed fourth with 114 points and the women’s team scored 62.33 points to finish in fifth place on Friday at the Phil Esten Challenge meet held at Winona State.

Several Falcon women placed well at the meet including Jenny Aronson and Sammi Nyre. Aronson finished second in the long jump final with a provisional qualifying leap of 18-2. Nyre finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles final (15.63) and eighth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:05.55).

Kim Altenhofen finished second in the shot put (41-8 ¼) and Maranda Dohrn finished just behind in third place (41-2 ¾). Dohrn also finished sixth in the high jump (5-1).

Colleen Kopel finished second in the javelin (119-2 ¾) and Caitlin Brendum finished seventh (104-4 ¼). Brendum also placed ninth in the discus throw finals (122-½).

Kayla Hillman placed fourth in the pole vault (9-9) and Megan Rasmussen finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:05.34).

Tasha Arnold finished sixth in the 200-meter dash (26.71) and Kali Meurer finished eighth (27.15). Arnold also placed eighth in the 400-meter dash (59.76).

The Falcon men placed four of the top six performers in the 400-meter dash. Dan Rodewald finished second (50.34), Lucas Mueller placed third (50.76), Paul Schriener was fourth (50.91), and Indy Lijevall finished sixth (51.1).

In the men’s 1500-meter run the Falcons took three of the top eight scores. Nick Zeien was the top Falcon finisher in fourth place (4:03.66), Scott Degner placed fifth (4:04.24) and Alex Zeien finished eighth (4:12.35).
Three Falcons placed in the men’s triple jump as well. Michael Woodward won the event with a leap of 44-5 ¾. Anthony Sheppers finished third (41-6) and John Bratcher finished fifth (39-6 ¾).

There were several other notable finishers for the Falcon men on the day. Chad Ernst won the 10,000-meter run with a time of 32:13.99 while Scott Bowman finished in fifth place in the same race (33:41.59).
Josh Dietze finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.53). Jose Rojas finished sixth in the 3000-meter steeplechase (10:12.29) and Neil Skoog finished seventh (10:22.06).

Clai Catto finished third in the high jump (6-0 ½) and Bryce Robey finished seventh in the 400-meter hurdles (59.32). Dietze finished fifth in the high jump (5-8½) as well as eighth in the 400-meter hurdles (59.44).
Kyle Staff placed sixth in the long jump finals (19-5 ½) and Kevin Rengo placed fifth in the javelin throw finals (129-1).

Both the men’s and the women’s team competed in the 4x100 and the 4x400 relay races at the meet. The women’s team placed third in the 4x100 relay (51.16) and fourth in the 4x400 relay (4:10.97). The men’s team placed second in the 4x400 relay (3:21.82) and third in the 4x100 relay (43.71).

Some members of the team will next take the track at the Drake Relays April 22-25 beginning at 10 a.m., on each day. On Wednesday the Falcon men will run at the Macalester Invitational that starts at 4 p.m. The women will compete at the Macalester Invitational on Saturday and that meet starts at 10 a.m.

Falcons Compete at Gustavus Adolphus Invitational

The Falcon men's and women's track & field teams competed at the Lee Krough Invitational hosted at Gustavus Adolphus on Friday.

The Falcon women tallied 15 top 10 individual finishers, led by Jenny Aronson who won the long jump (18-¼) and placed eighth in the 200-meter dash (27.79).

The Falcon men had 12 top 10 finishers, led by Clai Catto who finished third in the high jump (6-7½). Team scores were not kept during the meet.

There were a number of notable finishes for the Falcons. On the women's team Sammi Nyre finished fourth (16.81) and Megan Rasmussen finished ninth (17.33) in the 100-meter hurdles. The pair also placed in the 400-meter hurdles where Nyre finished third (1:07.63) and Rasmussen fifth (1:08.01).

Maranda Dorhn finished third in the high jump (5-1½), Caitlin Brendum was fourth in the hammer throw (144-4), and Kim Altenhofen placed fourth in the shot put (40-1¼). Tasha Arnold finished fifth in the 400-meter dash (1:00.69) while Colleen Kopel finished sixth in the javelin throw (108-5).

Kali Meurer finished sixth in the 100-meter dash (13.40) and also placed sixth in the 200-meter dash (27.67). Carly Eggert finished eighth in the 1500-meter run (4:54.19) and Denise Nelson placed eighth in the discus throw (119-10).

Notable finishers for the Falcon men's team included Chad Ernst who placed sixth in the 1500-meter run (4:09.01). Dan Rodewald was 10th in two events, the 200-meter dash (22.99) and the 400-meter dash (50.31).

The Falcon men placed three individuals in the top 10 of the 800-meter run. Nick Zeien finished fourth (1:55.11), Alex Zeien finished sixth (1:56.07), and Indy Lijevall finished ninth (1:56.86).

Josh Dietze was eighth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.90), Ricky Hoffman finished eighth in the 3000-meter steeplechase (10:10.94), and Pete Carlson placed eighth in the pole vault (13-1½).

In the triple jump John Bratcher finished ninth (42-1 ½ ) and Anthony Sheppers finished 10th (40-9).

Two women's relay teams placed third at the meet. The 4x100 meter relay finished third (50.09) and the 4x400 meter relay finished third (4:04.64). The 4x200 meter relay finished seventh (1:53.26).

The men's relay teams finished fifth in the 4x400 (3:21.02), sixth in the 4x200 (1:33.99), and ninth in the 4x100 (44.64).

The Falcons will next compete at St. Olaf/Carleton on Saturday, April 18. Events begin at 9 a.m.

Falcons Open Outdoor Season; Win Seven Events at Falcon Invitational

The men's and women's track & field teams began the outdoor season this weekend at the Falcon Invitational in River Falls.

The Falcons won three men's events and four women's events in a successful opening meet.

The Falcon men flexed its muscle in the 400-meter dash. RF swept the top three places in the 400-meter dash, paced by event winner Dan Rodewald (50.65). Indy Lijevall finished second (50.97) and Lucas Mueller finished third (51.05).

Two more Falcon men claimed the top spot in their event. Clai Catto won the high jump competition by clearing 6-2 ¾ while John Bratcher finished first in the triple jump (41-1½).

There were a number of additional notable finishes for the Falcon men. Scott Degner finished second in the 800-meter run (1:58.26) and Chad Ernst placed second in the 5000-meter run (15:34.29). Bryce Robey placed third in the 400-meter hurdles (59.44), Paul Dalbec finished fourth in the long jump (18-8¾), and Kevin Rengo finished fourth in the decathlon (4680 points) closely followed by Joe Weinrich who placed fifth (4673 points).

In the 200-meter dash Dan Rodewald placed fifth (22.69) and Lucas Mueller finished ninth (23.3). Josh Dietz placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles final (16.33), Bryan Woitas placed sixth in the 100-meter dash final (11.70), and Pete Carlson placed sixth in the pole vault by clearing 11-11¾. Jim Walrath finished ninth in the javelin throw final (116-10).

In the 1500-meter run Nick Zeien placed sixth (4:06.39) and Alex Zeien placed seventh just .40 seconds behind (4:06.79). In the 3000-meter steeplechase UWRF finished sixth through ninth. Jose Rojas finished sixth, Neil Skoog finished seventh, Tony Casci finished eighth, and Ben Anderson finished ninth.

RF men's relay teams competed in two events. The River Falls 'A' 4x400 team won with a time of (3:30.38) and the River Falls 'A' team finished fourth in the 4x100 (43.87).

Two Falcon women finished the first weekend of the outdoor track & field season with NCAA Div. III provisional qualifying scores. Colleen Kopel won the heptathlon with 4295 points and Jenny Aronson won the long jump with a leap of 18-¼ to secure provisional qualifying.

Two additional Falcons gained top honors. Tasha Arnold won the 400-meter dash with a time of 61.38 and Carly Eggert won the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:44.48.

There were many other notable finishers for the women's team as the Falcons opened the outdoor season with a strong showing. Jessica Reed placed second in the 100-meter hurdles (15.32), Megan Rasmussen finished second in the 400-meter hurdles (67.17), and Kim Altenhofen finished second in the shot put (41-4½). In addition to winning the long jump, Aronson placed second in the 100-meter dash (12.81).

Leah Korf finished second in the 1500-meter run (4:59.68) while teammate Ania Sniadejewski placed eighth (5:11.71). Three Falcons made the final of the hammer throw. Caitlin Brendum finished second (142-2), Luciana Murillo placed fifth (128-10), and Shannon Amans placed ninth (123-8).

Brendum and Denise Nelson both made the finals in the javelin throw. Brendum finished third (98-6) and Nelson finished fifth (94-8). Kayla Hillman finished third in the pole vault by clearing 10 feet and Brianna Waldvogel placed third in the 3000-meter run (11:56.66).

Sarah Novak finished fourth in the heptathlon (3360 points) and teammate Maranda Dohrn finished fifth (3294 points). Tasha Arnold placed fourth in the 200-meter dash (27.08), Ahsley Graef placed fourth in the 3000-meter steeplechase (13:21.09), and Denise Nelson placed fifth in the discus (119-11).

In the relays the River Falls 'A' team finished second in the 4x100 (51.07). In the 4x400 relay the River Falls 'B' team finished second (4:15.43) and the 'A' team finished third (4:18.92).

The Falcons will next compete at the Gustavus Adolphus Invitational on Friday.

Zeien Secures All-American Honors at NCAA National Meet With Fifth Place Finish

Sophomore Nick Zeien ran in the 800 meter dash finals Saturday at the NCAA indoor track & field championships being held at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Indiana. Zeien finished fifth in the finals with a time of 1:54.99 to earn All-American Honors.

Falcon senior Kim Altenhofen competed in the shot put at the NCAA Meet on Saturday. Her throw of 43-6 was one position short of qualifying for the event final.

Zeien is the second Falcon to become a track & field All-American this season after Jenny Aronson placed eighth in the long jump on Friday with a jump of 17-9 1/2. Jessica Reed also competed at the NCAA Meet on Friday in the 55-meter hurdles where she set a new school record with a time of 8.37 seconds.

Zeien and Aronson become the 48th and 49th Falcons to earn the All-American honor in track & field and the 18th and 19th Falcons to gain the honor in the indoor season.

The UWRF men's team finished 48th with a total of four points. The UWRF women's team finished 60th with one team point.

Aronson Earns All-American Honors With
Eighth Place Finish at NCAA National Meet

Sophomore Jenny Aronson earned All-American honors with an eighth place finish in the long jump on Friday at the NCAA indoor track & field championships being held at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Indiana.

She jumped 17-9 ½ on her second attempt to earn the eighth place finish. In her first try she leaped 17-5. After her 17-9 ½ effort she faulted twice. On her fifth jump she went 16-10 ¾. She had another 17-5 effort in her final jump. She is the 48 th Falcon to earn track & field All-America honors. She is the 18 th Falcon to earn the honor in the indoor season.

Sophomore Nick Zeien qualified for Saturday's 800-meter finals by finishing in 1:54.17 in the preliminaries. He finished second in the first heat and had the fifth best time in the two preliminary heats. Zeien's time was his beat of the season. He will run the finals at 3:45 p.m., on Saturday.

Senior Jessica Reed had a great race in the 55-meter hurdles. She ran an 8.37 in the first heat and her time sets a school record. Unfortunately she failed to qualify for the finals despite the record setting time. She broke her own school record of 8.41 that she set at the Coca Cola Classic at UWRF in February.

Senior Kim Altenhofen will compete in the shot put on Saturday. That event starts at 1 p.m.

Four Falcons Will Compete at NCAA National
Indoor Track & Field Championships

March 9, 2009

Four members of the Falcon women’s and men’s track & field teams will compete in the NCAA Indoor Championship which will be held Friday and Saturday at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Indiana.

Kim Altenhofen, Jenny Aronson and Jessica Reed will compete for the women and Nick Zeien for the men.

Altenhofen, a senior, will compete in the shot put. She has the sixth best throw in the nation, 45-6 ¼. She had that throw at last weekend’s UW-Stevens Point Last Chance Meet. She will compete on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Aronson, a junior, will compete in the long jump. She has the ninth best jump with year, 18-3. She set that mark at the Stevens Point Last Chance Meet. The long jump will be held on Friday starting at 10 a.m.

Reed, a senior, will compete in the 55-meter hurdles. The event’s preliminaries will be held on Friday at 4:35 p.m., and the finals will be at 2:25 p.m., on Saturday. Reed has the nation’s 15th best time in the event, 8.41. She recorded that time at the Coca Cola Classic at UWRF in January.

Zeien, a sophomore, will run in the 800-meter race. The preliminaries will be at 5:55 p.m., on Friday with the finals set to start at 3:45 p.m., on Saturday. Zeien has the 13th best time in the nation with a 1:53.84. He recorded that at the Stevens Point Last Chance meet.

Falcons Compete at Stevens Point Last Chance Meet

March 7, 2009

Several members of the Falcon men's and women's track & field teams competed in the UW-Stevens Point Last Chance meet on Saturday afternoon.

Nick Zeien won the 800-meter run in 1:53.84. It was his fastest time of the season and improved his NCAA Meet provisional qualifying time. Michael Woodward placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 44-6 3/4. That was his best jump of the season. Chad Ernst placed seventh in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:48.11.

Two Falcon women won events. Jenny Aronson won the long jump with a leap of 18-3 which was her best effort of the year. Kim Altenhofen won the shot put with a throw of 45-6 1/2 and that is her best throw of the season. Leah Korf placed fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:24.77.

There were no team scores kept.

Several Falcons will find out on Sunday if they have qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship which will be held next weekend at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Indiana.

Falcons Compete in Second Day of WIAC Meet; Reed Wins 55 Hurdles Title

The Falcon men's and women's track & field teams competed in the second and final day of the WIAC Championships on Sunday in Menomonie.

The women finished in fifth place with a two-day total of 49 points while the men tallied 29 points for eighth place.

Jessica Reed led the way for the Falcon women by winning the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.45. She earned All-WIAC first team honors for her finish. Colleen Kopel also made the finals in the 55-meter hurdles and finished eighth (8.92).

Kopel competed in the pentathlon as well and finished fourth with 3069 points. Three other Falcons had notable finishes. Leah Korf finished fifth in the 800-meter run (2:20.47), Carly Eggert finished sixth in the 3,000-meter run (10:19.16), and Natasha Arnold placed seventh in the 400-meter dash (1:05.05).

The Falcon men were led by Nick Zeien who finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.8. He earned All-WIAC second team honors. Clai Catto placed third in the high jump (6-4¼), Dan Rodewald finished fourth in the 400-meter dash (50.4), and Michael Woodward finished seventh in the triple jump (43-10 ¾). Chad Ernst finished 10 th in the 3,000-meter run (8:47.15).

The Falcon women's 4x200 relay team of Samantha Nyre, Kali Meurer, Megan Rasmussen, and Eryn Lansverk finished fifth with a time of 1:48.28. The 4x400 relay team of Meurer, Natasha Arnold, Leah Korf, and Rasmussen finished seventh with a time of 4:06.50.

The Falcon men's 4x400-relay team of Dan Rodewald, Nick Zeien, Indy Lijevall, and Lucas Mueller finished fourth with a time of 3:24.38.

Some Falcons will compete in the Whitewater Last Chance Meet on Friday and the Stevens Point Last Chance Meet on Saturday.

Falcon Women Compete in UM Open

Feb. 21, 2009

The Falcon women's track & field team participated in the Parents' Day Open at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse on Saturday.

The top individual finisher for the Falcons was Colleen Kopel. She finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdle final with a time of 9.51. Sammi Nyre also made the finals and finished in seventh place just .01 behind her teammate (9.52).

Nyre also qualified for the finals in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.09. Ania Sniadejewski finished 12th in the 800-meter run (2:28.45) and Kathryn Krause finished just behind her in 14th place (2:30.97). Carly Eggert finished 12th in the mile run (5:11.25), Jenny Aronson finished 13th in the 200-meter dash (28.08), and Ahsley Graef finished seventh in the 5000-meter run (20:15.81).

In the field events, Kim Altenhofen placed 12th in the weight throw (45-2 ¼). Caitlin Brendum placed 15th in the weight throw (43-8 ½) and also placed 17th in the shot put (36-1 ½). Also, Jenny Aronson finished 10th in the long jump (15-11 ¾).

The 4x200-meter relay team finished fourth in 1:48.74 and the 4x400-meter relay team finished 8 th with a time of 4:03.47.

The next meet for the Falcons is the WIAC Meet. It will be held at UW-Stout next weekend. Events begin at 11 a.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Falcon Men Compete at UM Snowshoe Open

Feb. 20, 2009

The men's track team competed in the Snowshoe Open at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse in Minneapolis, Minn., on Friday.

Several Falcons had notable finishes. Clai Catto cleared 6-4 ¼ and placed fifth in the high jump and John Bratcher finished sixth in the triple jump (42-5 ½). Derren Izdepski placed 11th in the weight throw with a toss of 52-11. Michael Woodward placed 18th in the long jump with a leap of 19-10.1/4, and Jesse Walters finished seventh in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:28.69.

The Falcon women's track team will compete at the Minnesota Invitational beginning at 9 a.m., on Saturday.

The next meet for the Falcon men's team is the WIAC Meet. It will be held at UW-Stout next weekend. Events begin at 11 a.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Reed Breaks 55 Meter Hurdle Record and Izdepski Breaks Weight Throw Record at Coca Cola Classic

Jessica Reed won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.43 and broke her own school record for the event. She set the previous record of 8.45 in 2007.

The Falcon women had a number of notable finishers for the event. Carly Eggert won the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:22.53 and Colleen Kopel won the Pentathlon with a total score of 3042. Kim Altenhofen placed third in the shot put (42-8 1/4) and Caitlin Brendum finished fifth in the weight throw (46-1 1/2). Sammi Nyre finished sixth in the 200-meter dash (26.77) and sixth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.94). Leah Korf finished sixth in the mile run (5:21.22). Jenny Aronson finished fifth in the long jump (16-0 1/4).

Derren Izdepski finished third in the weight throw with a new school record of 54-10. Izdepski breaks his own school record of 53-6 1/2 set earlier this season.

The Falcon men also had a number of notable finishers. Dan Rodewald finished fifth in the 200-meter dash (23.19) and fourth in the 400-meter dash (51.80). Teammate Lucas Mueller finished fifth in the 400-meter dash (51.92). Jesse Walters placed fifth in the 600-meter dash (1:27.93). Nick Zeien placed second in the 800-meter run (1:55.33) and Indy Lijevall finished fourth in the same event (1:58.18). Scott Degner finished fifth in the mile run (4:25.35). David Borner won the 3000-meter run (8:44.31) and Chad Ernst finished fourth (9:01.32). Josh Dietze finished third in the 55-meter hurdles (8.10). John Bratcher finished third in the triple jump (39-9 3/4). Clai Catto finished third in the high jump (6-4 3/4).

The Falcons will next compete at the Minnesota Invitational on February 20-21. Events start at 4 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The Falcon men placed seventh with 36 points and the Falcon women placed 11th with 19 points at the Stevens Point Invitational on Saturday.

The Falcon men had nine individuals place in the top 10 of their event. Clai Catto led the Falcon with a win in the high jump (6-3½), Pete Carleson finished third in the pole vault (13-1½), Chad Ernst finished third in the 5000-meter run (15:14.2), Nick Zeien finished fourth in the 800-meter run (1:55.8), Michael Woodward finished fifth in the triple jump (43-4½), Lucas Mueller finished ninth in the 400-meter dash (52.05), Scott Degner finished ninth in the 1 mile run (4:31.05), Josh Dietze finished tenth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.28), and Ricky Hoffman finished 10th in the 3000-yard run (9:36.09).

The Falcon women also had a numer of notable performers on Saturday. Maria Michaud finished second in the 5000-meter run (18:19.21), Leah Korf finished fourth in the 800-meter run (2:21. 58), Kayla Hillman finished sixth in the pole vault (9-¼), Megan Rasmussen finished 10th in the 400-meter dash (1:02.10), and Samantha Nyre finished 10th in the 55-meter hurdles (9.23).

The men's 'A' team in the 4x400-meter relay placed third (3:23.96) and the women's 'A' team finished sixth (4:06.98).

The Falcons will host the Coca Cola Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Knowles Building. Events start at 3 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Falcons Compete at St. Olaf Invite; Zeien Sets 600 Record

The Falcon men's and women's track & field teams competed at the St. Olaf Invitational on Friday and Alex Zeien set a school record in the 600-meter run.

Zeien finished the 600 in 1:17.9 to break the school record set by Keven Syverson of 1:21.85 set in 1992. He finished first in the race.

The Falcon men took first in four other events. Dan Rodewald won the 200-meter dash (23.1), Clai Catto topped the field in the high jump (6-2 3/4), and Paul Schreiner won the 400-meter dash (53.01). River Falls finished with the top two spots in the 4x400 meter relay. The 'A' team finished first with a time of 3:27.02 and the 'C' team finished second with a time of 3:36.32.

The Falcons had a number of other top finishers from the men's team. Michael Woodward finished second in both the triple jump (44-1 1/4) and the long jump (20-7 1/4), Josh Dietze finished second in the 55-meter hurdles (8.27), Brian Woitas placed third in the 55-meter dash (6.72), David Borner finished second (4:27.68) and Chad Ernst finished third (4:34.08) in the mile run, Jake Doro second in the 400-meter dash (53.11), Indy Lijevall finished third in the 800-meter run (2:01.55), Scott Degner placed third in the 1000-meter run (2:37.89), and Derren Izdepski finished third in the weight throw (52-2 1/2).

The Falcon women also earned the top spot in five events. Jessica reed won the 55-meter hurdles (8.47), which is just .02 off a school record. Carly Eggert topped the field in the mile run (5:19.05), Natasha Arnold won the 400-meter dash (1:01.82), and Kim Altenhofen won the shot put competition (42-9 3/4). River Falls took the top two spots in the 3000-meter run as Maria Michaud finished first (10:41.69) and Christine Peters finished second (10:47.77).

The Falcon women had a number of other top finishers as well. Ania Sniadejewski placed second in the 600-meter run (1:47.16), Leah Korf finished second in the 1000-meter run (3:04.82), Caitlin Brendum finished second in the weight throw (46-feet), and the 4x400 meter relay 'A' team finished second (4:08.85).

The Falcons will next host the Coca Cola Classic on Feb. 13-14 at the Knowles Building.

Falcons Open Season at Stout Open; Izdepski Sets Record

The Falcon men's and women's track & field teams kicked off the indoor season at the UW-Stout Open on Saturday.

Derren Izdepski set a school record for the men in the weight throw with a toss of 53-6 ½. He placed fourth overall. That broke his own record of 51-7 1/4 he set last year. The Falcons had a number of other top finishers on the day. Michael Zweifel finished third in the triple jump (42-2 1/4), Ricky Hoffman finished third in the one mile run (4:38.18), Nick Zeien finished third in the 800-meter run (1:58.43), and the men's 'A' team finished third in the 4x400 meter relay (3:30.98). Chad Ernst finished fourth in the 3000-meter run (8.54.53) and Clai Catto finished fourth in the high jump clearing 6-5 1/2.

The Falcon women's team, the 2008 NCAA Outdoor National Champions, began the indoor season with some excellent results. Kim Altenhofen placed first in the shot put with a 44-6 3/4 throw. Jessica Reed won the 55-meter hurdles (8.51) while her teammate Colleen Kopel finished third (8.87). Leah Korf finished third in the 800-meter run (2:22.89), Carly Eggert finished third in the 3000-meter run (10:41.66), and Christine Peters finished third in the 5000-meter run (19:12.1). Caitlin Brendum finished fifth in the weight throw with a 47-1 1/2 effort.

The Falcons will next travel to the St. Olaf Invitational on Friday.
