The final game would be the Falcons biggest win as they finished 13 points above their opponent. "Our serving is our strength and we have good hitting," said Ford, "if we focus on the little other pieces, everything else will just fall into place." Falcons Lose Close Match against St. Thomas Oct. 24, 2006 "I thought we were going to win this one, I thought we had the momentum," explained Falcon Coach Patti Ford . The women's volleyball team had an emotional night as the battled back from tough odds to put the match within three points of defeating the ninth ranked team in the AVCA. Tonight's Parent/Senior night was full of highs and lows, but it was St. Thomas University who pulled out a victory, three games to two; 30-28, 30-20, 27-30, 26-30, and 15-12. In the first game UST got off to an early four point run and the Falcons were slow to catch up. It wasn't until late in the game the Falcons began to fire up and put some points on the board and put the game within one point. UST held the lead the entire game and won 30-28. The second game started off with a little more aggression as both ends played tough, but Falcon errors and hard hitting from UST wore them down fast. UST grabbed a nine point lead which the Falcons were not able to recover from. Setter Kat Krtnick tried to fire up her team with some scrappy defense, but was unable to get her team to victory. "Kat played a gifted game," said Ford "a lot of times her efforts go unnoticed, but she stepped up her defense which shuts down the other team's hitters." The Falcons walked into the third game with something to prove as they took and held the lead for the first time in the match. Middle hitter Andrea Geehan slammed down some big points, as she was able to get on top of the ball. Tough passing prevented Geehan from getting some solid hits in the first two games. "She uses her strategy to tip and push the ball when she can't get a good swing," explained Ford. During the last ten points of the game, every strategy from both players and coaches was called upon. Three time outs were called and the game was tied up five times before a solid spike by Geehan ended the game at 27-30. The Falcons brought their momentum into the fourth game as they brought the level of play up one notch and began to play their game. "We really came together and streamlined our play," said Ford. They played hard offense and tough defense and this time it was a kill by Kate Thompson that sent the match into game five. UST jumped to an early five point lead, then a time out put the momentum back on the Falcon's side as they went on a four point run. The Falcons then tied the game up at seven as the lead switched back and fourth until a hard spike by UST ended the game 15-12. Leaders for the Falcons include Geehan with 20 kills, Krtnick with 63 assists and she led in digs with 28. Molly Thompson and Lindsey Mace each had two service aces and Gina DeRosa had five block assists. "I can't fault them for their efforts," said Ford "to come back and continue to play hard is very commendable." The Falcons are hosting the annual Trick or Treat Tournament this Friday and Saturday at the Karges Center. On Friday they play Lakeland at 4 pm and Millikin at 8 pm. On Saturday, the Falcons will play Bethel at 10:30 am and Superior at 2:30 pm

They came back to an 8-7 lead and held on tight. The second game was a lot like the first with UWL jumping to another three point lead with the Falcons battling back and staying just a few points behind. UWL then went on a six point run that the Falcons couldn't recover from and they trailed the rest of the game, despite their own last ditch efforts in a five point run with UWL just one point from finishing the game. UWL pulled out a win, 30-25. That would be their only victory as the Falcons came back in the third game and quickly took a strong 11-3 lead. That plus a late six-point run gave UWL little chance of making a comeback. In the final game, both teams battled hard with neither team backing down on any points, but the Falcons were stronger as their outstanding hitting was better than La Crosse's defense. A solo block by Andrea Geehan closed the match with a 30-21 win. Geehan led in block assists with five. Geehan and Kate Thompson had one solo block each. Hitter Molly Thompson led the team with 26 kills and had three ace serves. Libero Lindsey Mace led in digs with 30. The Falcons are playing tough and are looking forward to being on the road for the next couple of weeks. "We also have a lot less unforced errors, which plagued us in September," said Ford "We take our matches one by one and don't overlook what's in front of us." The Falcons play their next match at Stout on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Falcons now have a record of 14-8 overall and are 3-2 in the conference. |

Falcons Defeat Platteville Oct. 6, 2006 The Falcons quickly defeated Platteville in three games, beating them 30-20, 30-26, and 30-15 Friday night at the Karges Center Before the match, Falcon hitter Kate Thompson was honored for her 1,000th career kill mark. She is one of only 11 Falcons to ever receive this honor. She recorded her 1,000th kill in the match against Webster last Saturday. Thompson resume from where she left off in the win over Platteville leading UWRF with 13 kills. Other top players for the Falcons during the match were Kat Krtnick with 35 assists, Gina DeRosa with six block assists and Kelsey Scheele and Lindsey Mace with 10 digs a piece. UWP hoped to mark their first conference win as they came into the match with a record of 0-3 in the WIAC and 14-6 overall. The matched looked like it could be a tough battle, but the pace set by the Falcons left UWP unable to keep up. In the first game the Falcons were working to serve deep to throw them off UWP's game, but the Falcons had trouble keeping the ball in the court. "We wanted to take them out of their offense, the adrenaline in the first part of the game probably had a lot to do with the missed serves," explained Falcon Coach Patti Ford. The first five points for UWP came from Falcon serving errors. The Falcons strong hitting and defense kept them in the game till they found their hitting rhythm and went on a five point run that UWP couldn't recover from. UWP stepped up their game in the second game keeping the lead for the first half . The Falcons kept it close, however and were able to make a six-point run that gave them a 25-18 lead. UWP kept battling however, but the Falcons were consistent with their passes, which allowed the Falcons to win 30-26. "Lindsey Mace had a great game which keeps the hitters going," said Ford. In the final game the Falcons left UWP behind. They came in and quickly jumped to a 10-5 lead and weren't even close to backing down. It was a quick and strong win as the Falcons won 30-15. "We stuck with our game," said Ford and by doing so the Falcons took total command of the match. They are hoping for similar results as they play another home WIAC match on Saturday against La Crosse at noon at the Karges Center. "Relax and pass" is the team's mantra as they plan to "keep the ball on our side and play our game." The Falcons go into the match with a conference record of 2-2 and are 13-8 overall. La Crosse is 16-5 overall and 3-1 in the WIAC. The Eagles defeated Stout, three games to none, on Friday night in Menomonie. |

Falcons Lose Tough Match to Eau Claire Sept. 27, 2006 Mental and physical drain left the Falcons to a loss on their home court Wednesday night, as they lost to UW-Eau Claire in four games, 25-30, 30-28, 30-26, and 30-18. The Blugolds are ranked No. 5 in the AVCA, and the Falcons wasted not time proving they could hang with them. In the first game the Falcons jumped to an early 9-1 lead, but the Blugolds chipped away, tying the game up at 12. The lead went back and forth with both teams playing hard, but an ace serve by Lindsey Mace finished the game at 30-25. "The first game was the best we've played as a group," said Falcon Coach Patti Ford. The Falcons carried their momentum into the second game with a lot of fire and holding the lead for the first nine plays, but the Blugolds were far from giving up as they fought back to take the lead. A block for a point by the Falcons tied the score at 28, but the Blugolds squeaked out a win with an ace serve of their own. Like the first two games, the third proved to be a battle for every point. The Falcons held a steady lead, but the Blugolds were never far behind. With the teams tied at 20 a real struggle for the lead began as the teams fought for every point, but it would be the Blugolds who came out on top with a 30-26 win. Finally it seemed like the Falcons ran out of energy as the Blugolds went on a six point run that left them cold. At a 27-15 lead the Falcons couldn't make a come back as they fell 30-18 in the fourth game. "We wore down in the fourth game," said Ford. "Our mental toughness didn't stay with us and we broke down in all areas." Hitting for the Falcons was on the positive, however, as Molly Thompson and Andrea Geehan did an impressive job of splitting the block as well as the back court. "I feel like we got our groove with hitting," said Ford "Andrea has such an impact that teams have to defend her which opens hitting up for everyone else." The Falcons play this weekend at the Simpson Invitational. On Friday the Falcons will be taking on Buena Vista at 3 p.m. and Webster at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Falcons will be playing Wartburg at 12:15 p.m. and Simpson at 2:20 p.m. "We're hoping this tournament gives us some momentum back. We're mid-season and there is not a lot of time left," said Ford. |

Falcons Defeat UWS for First Conference Win Sept. 20, 2006 The first game was a battle with each team working hard for every point, but the Falcons were just warming up before going on a nine-point run. UWS battled their way within six, but a solo block from Gina DeRosa finished the game in a 30-19 win. UWS started the second game with some fire, but the Falcons retaliated quickly and moved to an eight-point lead. UWS worked hard, but couldn't get closer than six points from the Falcons. For the final match the Falcons weren't fooling around and came in strong with an early seven point run and a few plays later were back on a ten-point run. "That was one our goals," said Falcon Coach Patti Ford, "we wanted to improve on our run numbers." Ford also gives credit for the big win to the teams serving. "We forced them out of any game plan they could had. Our strong, tough serving forced them out of their rhythm." Leaders for the game were Krista Russel with 10 kills, Kat Krtnick with 36 assists, Molly Thompson led in both digs, with ten, and serving aces with four. DeRosa was strong at the net with six block assists and one solo block. Overall, the teams hitting was on fire with a .315 hitting percentage. The Falcons now have a record of 8-6 overall and are 1-0 in the WIAC. They hope to keep their undefeated start in the WIAC, as they take on UW- Stevens Point on Saturday. The Falcons will be playing without starters Andrea Geehan and Lindsey Mace, but Ford doesn't think that will be a problem. "We have enough talent to put it together and shouldn't have any problems." |
