UW-La Crosse Men, Women Win 2007 WIAC Track & Field Championships May 5, 2007 The UW-La Crosse men and women won the 2007 WIAC outdoor track & field championships held at the Ramer Field Sports Complex at UW-River Falls on Saturday. This is the La Crosse men’s team’s 17th straight championship. The La Crosse women have now won eight titles in the last 10 years. Only UW-Oshkosh (2004, 2006) have won team titles during the past 10 seasons. The La Crosse men scored 232 points followed by Whitewater 158, Oshkosh 103, Stevens Point 102, Platteville 84, Stout 62, Eau Claire 62, River Falls 40 and Superior 14. The La Crosse women totaled 204.3 points followed by Oshkosh 163, River Falls 121, Eau Claire 110, Stevens Point 89, Platteville 64, Stout 42.6, Whitewater 42 and Superior 22. Men’s Recap Mike Queensland of La Crosse won the 100 with a time of 10.81 and teammate Tony Marsinek won the 400 in 47.03. Marcus Walgrave of La Crosse won the 200 in 21.88. Andrew Boldt of La Crosse won the 800 in 1:54.93. Platteville’s Tyler Sigl was a double winner. He won the 1,500 for the third straight year. He won this year’s race in 3:58.31. He also won the 5,000 in 15:14.45. Sigl was named the meet’s Track Athlete of the Meet. In the hurdle events, Platteville’s Ben Zizis won the 110 event in 14.77 and La Crosse’s Brad Peterson won the 400 event in 52.71. La Crosse’s Jessie Dengsavang won the triple jump with a leap of 48-2 ¾ and teammate Bobby Riley won the shot put with a 54-3 ¼ effort. Steven Point’s Mitch Ellis defended his 2006 high jump title with a win again this year. He leaped 6-8 ¼. Whitewater’s Dan Hytinen won the discus with a throw of 177-11. Stevens Point’s Kyle Steiner won the decathlon with 6,664 points. He was named the meet’s Field Athlete of the Meet. La Crosse’s Brent Ericksen was named the Coach of the Year. Jonathan Otte, UW-Whitewater and Kevin Becker, UW-La Crosse, were named the sport’s Scholar-Athletes. Women’s Recap On the track Liz Caine of Stevens Point sprinted the straight for a winning 100-meter time of 12.45. Amanda Donath (Oshkosh) won the 400 in a meet record breaking time of 55.59. The prior record was set in 2005 by Melissa Marvin (La Crosse) with a time of 56.5. Marcia Taddy (Platteville) won two events. She won the 1500-meter run for the third consecutive time. Her time was 4:41.69. She came back in the 800 and won that race in 2:13.26. It was the third straight win for Taddy in that event also. She was named the Track Athlete of the Meet. Kristen Painter (La Crosse) was the first place winner in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:28.68. Nadine Pieske of Oshkosh sprinted half a lap for a win in the 200-meter dash in a time of 24.54. That was her third straight title in the event. In the hurdles Jessica Reed of River Falls stopped the clock at 14.87 for the win in the 100. Also of River Falls, Shannon Zweifel won the 400-meter hurdles for the second year in the row with a time of 1:03.28. In the relays, La Crosse produced a first place finish in the 400-meter relay. The last leg crossed the line at 48.13. Oshkosh ended the meet with the winning finish in the 1,600-meter relay (3:53.21). On the field, a jump of 5-5 ¾ gave Jill Crandall (River Falls) the win. Crandall previously won the event at the 2004 WIAC Championships. She also won the women’s heptathlon with 4,444 total points. Crandall was named the Field Athlete of the Meet. Tossing 146-7 Dana Thompson of Whitewater topped all competitors in the discus. Ashlea Peter of Stout won the medal in the triple jump with a distance of 38-4 ¾. Krista Hasselquist of River Falls won the shot put with a toss of 43-9 ½. Pat Healy of UW-La Crosse was named the Coach of the Year. UW-Eau Claire’s Liz Faller was named the sport’s Scholar-Athlete. |
