UW-La Crosse Men, Women Hold Lead After First Day of 2007 WIAC Track & Field Championships

The UW-La Crosse men and women are in first place after the first day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference track & field championships held at the Ramer Field Sports Complex at UW-River Falls.

The La Crosse men scored 72 points and the women 62.6.

Women’s Recap

Throwing the hammer for a record breaking distance of 192-4, Terri Schwamb of Oshkosh earned a first place finish in the event. The previous record was set by Oshkosh’s Robyn Jarocki in 2004 at a distance of 183-10. Also in field events, Steph Barnes (Eau Claire) won the pole vault with a leap of 11-10 ½. Leaping 18-9 ¼ Katie Fondow of La Crosse produced a first place medal in the long jump. Vicki Cooper of River Falls ended day one field events with the winning mark in the javelin throw at a distance of 125-4.

On the track, Jennifer Rogers (Whitewater) ran the distance for a winning time of 37:24.94 in the 10,000-meter run. Facing barriers Oshkosh performer Jenny Graef crossed the finish line at 11:17.72 for a win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. In the day’s only relay event, Platteville won the 3,200-meter relay for the second consecutive year. They finished in 9:21.14.

Jill Crandall (River Falls) leads the women in the heptathlon after the first four events. Her score currently totals 2,833 points. She is followed by AnnMarie Glejf of La Crosse with 2511 points. The women will finish the event tomorrow competing in the long jump, javelin and 800-meter run.

Men’s Recap

Earning the title of conference champ in the 3,000-meter steeple chase, Mike Herlihy (La Crosse) finished the race in a time of 9:18.86. Also for La Crosse Paul Moran earned a win in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 30:50.12. Oshkosh won the first relay event of the meet with a 3,200- meter relay team finishing in 7:43.24.

Kevin Becker of La Crosse took the title in the hammer throw with a winning distance of 210-7. Winning the pole vault Matt Novak (La Crosse) vaulted 16-6 ½. Dan Herms (Whitewater) won the medal in the long jump with a leap of 23-4. Throwing the javelin Bronson Stelzer of La Crosse beat out all competitors with a distance of 185-9.

In the men’s decathlon Kyle Steiner (Stevens Point) leads after the first day of events. He totals 3552 points. He is followed by Clint Christy of River Falls with 3549 points. The men will finish the last five events tomorrow in order of the 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meter run.

Temperatures throughout the day were in the mid to upper 50s with east southeast winds blowing between 10-20 miles per hour. There was light rain falling on and off throughout the day.

The WIAC Championships will resume Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. at the Ramer Field Sports Complex.
