By Kara Walser Meghan Hunstock, a junior post player, is continuing her career with the Falcons women's basketball team in her second season. After transferring from North Park University in Chicago, Hunstock came to River Falls as a sophomore and an asset to the women's basketball team. While at North Park, she played in every game, started three times, and had a great experience with the team. She originally chose to go to school in Chicago because of the distance and although she grew to love the city, she missed her family too much to stay away. She transferred to River Falls to be closer to her family and home in Minneapolis, Minn. Hunstock was born in Chicago, Ill. but moved to Minneapolis when she was one year old. She has a twin sister, Caitlin, who transferred from West Chester University to River Falls to also play on the women's basketball team. Hunstock feels that being on the same team with her sister is tough, yet rewarding. "We really don't get jealous of each other," she says. "We tend to argue, but that is just because we are both competitive." She also has an older brother who is currently in the United States Air Force flight school in Pensacola, Fla. "I like that my brother is in the Air Force. I like to hear about all his training and I like to brag about it too," Hunstock says. "Since he is only in flight school right now, he won't go overseas any time soon, but once he's done, I will be really nervous." Her parents are William and Cheryl Hunstock. "My mom works for the Department of Transportation in Minnesota and my dad is a financial planner and minor league football coach," she says. "My parents are my inspiration because they support me in whatever I do and they are always there for me." Hunstock has been playing basketball since the fourth grade. After being on a traveling team at Minneapolis South High School, Hunstock was a three year starter, made the all-city team three consecutive years and was a captain her senior year. "I like playing basketball. I just love the game," she says. "I love to be competitive and work hard." Coach Cindy Hovet agrees with Hunstock. "She comes to practice and works her tail off," says Hovet. "She asks questions, wants to learn and helps her teammates. She has good ball skills and great hands." When asked what she likes to do with her free time, Hunstock replies that with the little time she has away from school and basketball, she is involved in her church as much as possible, visits home and works. She also likes to spend time with her boyfriend of three years, Amere, friends and family. Hunstock, like her dad, enjoys watching football. Besides basketball, another passion of Hunstock's is music. "I love music and although I'm a horrible singer, I love to do it anyways. I am a huge American Idol fan!" When asked if she would ever try out for the show, she laughs and says, "No way! I love to watch it and I love to sing, but I am terrible. I don't want to make a fool of myself!" After changing majors a few times, Hunstock is settled on accounting. Being a business finance major for the last year, she took some accounting courses and realized that she liked the classes and did well in them. "I like the fact that UWRF offers a lot of majors and I was able to try some different things to figure out what I really wanted to do." Hunstock works just as hard in the classroom as she does on the court. She was named to the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and the Dean's List after her first year on campus. "She is a great student," says Hovet. "She doesn't do anything half way in the classroom or on the court." Hunstock hopes to take the CPA or CMA exams after graduation and get a good job at a major accounting firm. She also hopes to move back into the Twin Cities area. "River Falls is a little too small for me because I am from Minneapolis," she says. "I wouldn't mind one day moving back to Chicago because I think that it is a great city with a lot of opportunities." |
