By Katie Velebir Cary Cardinal is a captain of the Falcons men's cross country and has been considered a valuable asset to the team throughout his four-year career. He is a senior and will graduate with a degree in education. Cardinal is a Dean's List and WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll recipient. Cardinal is originally from Amery, Wis., and attended high school there. In his spare time he enjoys competing against his roommate in video games. "I enjoy my video games quite a lot," Cardinal explains. Movies are also top on his list for things to do in his rare free time. Action movies are his favorite genre; Boondock Saints, Tombstone and Fight Club are among his favorites. His favorite color is red, which works out great because both the high school he attended and UW-River Falls have red as their school color. Cardinal has been a DJ for WRFW 88.7 Pure Radio, the campus radio station since he was a freshman. One of the perks of the job is that he gets to sample underground music. This type of music has grown on him. "There is a lot of good stuff out there," he explains. Oasis and Reel Big Fish are two of his favorite groups. Cardinal resides in Prucha Hall where he has been vice president for two years. He lives the normal college lifestyle, which almost always includes fast food as a way of life. His favorite fast food venue is Taco Bell. Surprisingly, Cardinal was unsure as to whether or not he was going to participate in cross country on the college level. "I thought that I had enough after running all four years in high school," Cardinal said. He fell in love with the UW-RF team from the start and decided to stick with it, much to the team's advantage. Falcon Head Coach Don Glover explains, "The team means a lot to Cary; he wants it to succeed and will do anything to make that happen." The friendships that Cardinal has formed along the way are what are going to be most memorable to him as he finishes his career. Being the captain of a team is a sizeable responsibility and Cardinal describes it as, "an honor." He learned his hard work ethic from his older brother, Craig, who attended the University of Minnesota and graduated with a degree in chemical engineering. "He had to work pretty hard for that," Cardinal explains. After Cardinal graduates he would like to stay in the area to be near his family. He looks forward to moving forward with his life," Now my time is come," an emotional Cardinal explains. His post-graduate plans include teaching math and coaching cross country. |
