Katie Velebir Katie Lynn Anderson may only be a sophomore, but she has already demonstrated that she is a fearless competitor for the Falcon tennis team. Originally from Forest Lake, Minn., where she attended high school, she came to UWRF as a singles player. Falcon Coach Lee Lueck, saw Anderson's talent immediately and thought that she would better serve the team as a doubles player. His instinct was right on point. Anderson and her doubles partner, Mindy Rudiger "have been amazing" coach Lueck explains. He continues to expect great things from this young protégé. Anderson belongs to the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Her future academic goals include making the Dean's List as well as the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll.Her family structure is strong. Her parents are still happily married and she has two younger brothers. Her family has been a significant contributor to her successful career thus far. They attend most of her matches, and the ones that they do not make it to they call immediately after to see how she did. "My family is very close-knit and they help motivate me." Anderson explains. During her free time she enjoys shopping, listening to music - mostly punk rock, running and hanging out with friends and family. Anderson had a deep passion for tennis. She played basketball in high school until a bad experience drew her away from the game and focused her attention elsewhere. She feels that tennis is a sport that will interest her throughout her entire life. |Playing for UWRF has shown Anderson that the team is like a family. Much like her own family the team is close-knit and it is that atmosphere that propels her passion for the game on a daily basis. "Coach Lueck is like my dad away from home, it takes a pretty amazing person to deal with a bunch of girls," she said with a laugh. Anderson is a strong Catholic who enjoys commuting home every Sunday to attend Mass with her family and eat a hearty, home-cooked meal afterwards. Lueck explains, "I could tell that Katie grew up in a good family, she is always so pleasant and appreciative and her manners - she is just so polite." Anderson is majoring in elementary education and her minor is in reading language arts and coaching. In the future she hopes to teach and someday become the principle of an elementary school and coach tennis. |
