2005 Falcon Women's Tennis Player of the Week

Singles: Both Becky Briese (Jr., Roseau, Minn.), who plays at No. 3, and Mindy Rudiger (Fr., Menomonie, Wis.) had big weeks for the Falcons in two WIAC matches. Rudiger finished 2-0 and Briese 1-1. Rudiger came back to beat a Stevens Point opponent, 3-6, 6-3 (10-7) and a La Crosse opponent, 4-6, 7-6 (11-9). Briese topped a Stevens Point opponent, 6-3, 6-1, and lost to a La Crosse opponent, 6-3, 6-4. " Becky won a big match against a strong Stevens Point opponent," said Falcon Coach Lee Lueck. "The Stevens Point player had beaten the Eau Claire player that Becky had lost to the week before. We knew that Becky was going to be facing a tough opponent and Becky rose to the event. She was down a break in the first set. But then she became more offensive, took the net away and won that set, as well as the next," said Lueck. "Mindy continues to improve at No. 6 singles with a win against Stevens Point and our only win against La Crosse. Her singles record at No. 6 is now 4-2, plus a win against an Eau Claire player at No. 5 ," said Lueck.

The No. 1 doubles team of Megan Knobloch (Sr., Marshfield, Wis., Columbus HS) and Leah Baron (Sr., Hermantown, Minn. Proctor-Hermantown) finished 1-1 in two WIAC matches this week. On Friday the Falcon team beat the No. 1 Stevens Point team, 8-3. On Saturday they lost to a La Crosse team, 8-4. " The Stevens Point match was a must win for the #1 team to secure any can of a seed in the WIAC tournament and they came through," Falcon Coach Lee Lueck said. "Both of these players have been coming to practice a half hour early all week just to work on their doubles came and it paid off."

Singles: Megan Knobloch (Sr., Marshfield, Wis. Columbus HS), who plays No. 1, is having a great season with a record of 9-2 overall. Knobloch was 2-1 this past week. Knobloch had a huge comeback while playing against a UW-Whitewater opponent, winning the match, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4. Knobloch's opponent was undefeated entering the match. Knobloch won 6-0, 6-4 against Ripon on Friday afternoon. She lost to an Eau Claire opponent earlier in the week, 6-3, 6-3.
Doubles: : The No. 3 doubles team of Mindy Rudiger (Fr., Menomonie, Wis.) and Danielle Huper (Fr., Alden, Minn. United South Central HS) had a successful week defeating their opponents at UW-Eau Claire and Ripon. Picking up one of the two Falcons points at UW-EC, Rudiger-Huper won 9-7. Against Ripon, Rudiger-Huper defeated their opponents 8-3. They lost to a Whitewater team, 8-4. |

Singles: Mindy Rudiger (Fr, Menomonie, Wis.), playing at No. 6, had a great week. Rudiger was 2-0, defeating her opponent at Hamline 6-2, 6-0, and against UW-Oshkosh, 6-2, 6-3. "Rudiger is a quick learner, loves to attack the net, and displays a tremendous amount of energy. She has also been the main stay of the No. 3 doubles team," said Falcon Coach Lee Lueck.
Doubles: : The No. 3 doubles team of Mindy Rudiger (Fr, Menomonie, Wis.) and Danielle Huper (Fr., Wells, Minn.) had a successful week. The team made a great come back against Hamline. The team was down 5-2, and came back to defeat their opponents 8-6. "Their ability and willingness to adopt several new match strategies, and then go out and make them work, was rewarding for the players and coach alike," said Falcon Coach Lee Lueck. |

Singles: Co-captain and No. 2 singles player Leah Baron (Sr., Hermantown, Minn.) had an excellent week with a record of 2-0 in singles. Overall, Baron is 4-1 for the season. Baron defeated her opponent at Bethel 8-1. Against UW-Stout, Baron won 6-1, 6-1. "Leah is our best athlete and conditioned player," says Falcon Coach Lee Lueck.
Doubles: The No. 2 doubles team of Becky Briese, (Jr, Roseau, Minn.) and Kaylei Sorensen (Fr, Plover, Wis. Stevens Point HS) continue to have great success. Briese-Sorensen were 2-0 this past week defeating Bethel 8-4, and had a huge win against UW-Stout, with a final score of 8-0. The team remains undefeated for the season with an overall record of 6-0. "They work very well as a team, they play smart and aggressively," says Falcon Coach Lee Lueck. |

Singles: Co-Captain and No.1 singles player Megan Knobloch (Sr,. Marshfield, Wis. Columbus HS) had a great week of tennis, defeating her St. Scholastica and St. Mary's opponents. At St. Scholastic, Knobloch won 6-3, 6-2, and against St. Mary's she won 6-3, 6-1. "Megan plays the tough No.1 spot, and was able to defeat a very tough senior player from St. Mary's. Megan also defeated the No. 1 at St Scholastica. Megan's hard work over the summer has proven to be beneficial," said Falcon Coach Lee Lueck.
Doubles: The No. 3 doubles team of Molly Keifenheim (Fr, Buffalo Minn.) and Mindy Rudiger (Fr, Menomonie, Wis.) had a very successful week. Keifenheim and Rudiger defeated their opponents at St. Mary's, 8-4. Falcon Coach Lee Lueck feels that these two freshmen play very well together as a team. |

Singles: Becky Briese (Jr., Roseau, Minn.) had a great opening week for the Falcons. Briese won both of her singles matches. Against St. Norbert Briese competed at No. 3 singles and won 7-6, 6-3. Against Dominican, Briese played No. 2 singles and won 6-1, 6-1. Briese is stepping up from playing No. 5 singles last fall. "Becky is really rising up to the challenge," said Falcon Coach Lee Lueck.
Doubles: Becky Briese (Jr., Roseau, Minn.) and Kaylei Sorensen (Fr, Plover, Wis. Stevens Point HS) had an impressive opening week. Briese and Sorensen played No. 2 doubles against St. Norbert and defeated their opponent, 8-5. "Under the guidance of the veteran player (Briese) and with the talent of this good and very competitive freshman, (Sorensen), who plays No. 4 singles, they were able to defeat their opponent." said Falcon Coach Lee Lueck. |
