Falcon Finish Third in Competitive NCHA

March 9, 2006

By Tara Sowle
UWRF Sports Information

The Falcon women's hockey team finished their 2005-2006 season with a 14-11-2 overall record and an 8-6-1 record in NCHA play. UWRF placed third in the highly competitive NCHA.

"It was a season of highs and lows," said Falcon Coach Joe Cranston. "Beating Gustavus and Stevens Point was fun. Playing Middlebury in overtime in their rink was fun. Playing our final game of the year against Lake Forest was also a good way to end the year, especially for the three seniors."

The three seniors the Falcons will be losing are forwards Leah Baron, Lou Paulson and Lindsay O'Keefe. All were major contributors. Both Paulson and O'Keefe were named to the second All-NCHA team. Baron earned honorable mention.

The Falcons will be losing a combine 12 years of playing experience. Paulson finished her four years with the Falcons with 90 points and is the all-time leading scoring in Falcon history. She appeared in 108 career games and scored 48 goals and 42 assists. The 48 goals is also a career record. In 2006 she scored 11 goals and 17 points. O'Keefe led her team in scoring this year with eight goals and 21 points. O'Keefe is second all-time in scoring at UWRF with 88 points (43-45) in 109 games. Her 14 power-play goals is a school record. Baron played in 109 career games and scored 30 goals and finished with 62 career points.

"It will be hard to replace their leadership and dedication more than their contributions in points. I can recruit some kids to come here and score goals, but it would be hard to recruit three people with better character than Leah, Louie and Lindsay," said Cranston.

Next year the Falcons return some key players.

Junior defender Jenny Wallace was the only Falcon to earn first All-NCHA team honors. Wallace, who was an AHCA first team All-American in 2005, played all 25 regular season games and finished second on the team in scoring. She had eight goals and 19 points. She scored three power-play goals and two game-winners. Sophomore forward Jenna Scanlon and freshman defender Leigh Landgraph both earned honorable mention to the 2006 All-NCHA team. Scanlon led the Falcons with 13 goals and had 16 points while Landgraf had three goals and 12 points in her first collegiate season. Sophomore goalie Amber Lindner will return with the most playing experience. She finished this year with a 12-8-1 record. She had a .916 saves percentage and a 2.35 goals against average.

"I have no idea what next year will bring. I think it might be somewhat of a rebuilding year. We return a pretty good defensive core and have some good forwards. I would expect to have at least 10 or 12 new faces at tryouts next year," said Cranston.

The Falcons started the season with an impressive 3-1 win over the second ranked team in the U.S. College Hockey Online Div. III poll, Gustavus Adolphus.   The Falcons went on to beat Augsburg the next day (2-1). After a 5-2 loss to St. Thomas, the Falcons put together a four game winning streak. The Falcons then exchanged wins with Stevens Point (2-1) and Finlandia (5-1), before the Falcons racked up wins against St Mary's (5-2) and Neumann (3-1).   A close battle with Middlebury (3-2) that went into overtime started a three game losing streak before a 2-1 win over Lake Forest brought them back into the win column. The Falcons then lost to Stevens Point (4-1) and Superior (2-1), before starting another four game winning streak. The final two regular season games took the Falcons to Superior where they lost both games (5-2, 4-3). The Falcons went into NCHA Tournament seeded third and left in third behind Stevens Point and Superior. They won their final game over Lake Forest 4-2.

The game got interesting in the third when freshman Sara Halseth scored the first goal of the game at 3:55. She was assisted by Jenny Wallace. Falcons Defeat Gustavus Adolphus

Nov. 4 , 2005

The Falcons played an unbelievable season opener against Gustavus Adolphus. On paper there is no way the Falcons should have won. They were out-shot by the Gusties 46-11, but the combination of a strong defense, unbelievable goal tending, and well placed shots led the Falcons to defeat the second ranked team in the U.S. College Hockey Division III poll, 3-1.

Both teams scored in the first period, Gustavus was the first to put one in the net at 5:52 on a power play. Kelly Hurley had the first Falcon goal at 13:43 from back near the center line. She was assisted by Kristen Juven and Jennifer Wallace. Shooting for the Falcons proved that quality of quantity counts making only three shots on goal while the Gusties had 17. Neither team scored in the second period, but the Falcons were again outshot 18-2. The Falcons wasted little time scoring in the third period. Sara Halseth made the play by stealing from the defensemen and taking it right down for a score at 1:01. The second goal came from an empty net at 19:20 from Kelly Jensen. The Falcons were out shot in the third period 11-6.

Amber Lindner played an outstanding first game making 45 saves out of 46 shots. "That's just how good she is," said a not too surprised Coach Cranston.

The Falcon sufered from several penalties, but their tough kept them in the game. "We played hard and never gave up. We kept them to the perimeter and clogged the middle," said Cranston. The Gusties were 1-6 in power play attempts and the Falcons were 0-2.

Falcons Open Season With Two Home Games

Nov. 2 , 2005

The Falcon hockey team is looking forward to the 2005-06 season with a lot of depth at every position. Despite only three seniors on the roster, 16 players are returning.

Expect to see a lot of Amber Lindner in the goalie position this year. She played alongside last year's star goalie Marlene Yaeger who was an AHCA West All-American and the NCHA's Co-Player of the Year in 2003.

"Lindner looks the best ever and is moving better, and her attitude is great," said Falcon Coach Joe Cranston.   Lindner had a lot of experience last year and looks to fill the position well with 24 games under he belt and a record of 15-4.

"She had earned a shut-out last year against Superior that got us out of our losing streak," said Cranston. Last year she had 1.64 goals against average and a .924 saves percentage and four shutouts.

Mandi Mohwinkel is the only other goalie to have some experience on the ice. She played in one game last year against St. Mary's and made eight saves. Freshmen Kim Grafstrom and Katie Kantrud also look to help at the goalie spot.

The Falcons look to be strong at defense with returning junior Jenny Wallace. She was named to the AHCA West All-American team year. She helped out on offense too, scoring seven goals and led her team in assists with 13.   She finished eighth in the NCAA Div. III in power-play goals with six. Another junior, Emily Nierenhausen, will be looked at to contribute in points as well as defense. She had four goals and five assists for nine points. Sophomore Renae Bergh, also re-joins the team at defense. Last year she contributed three goals and one assist.   Sophomore Kacie Anderson is another returning defensemen. Last year she had three assists. Freshmen Kelli Dahle, Leigh Landgraf, and Jessie Dyslin are also ready to come into the defensive position.

Cranston is happy with the depth at forward this year. "We have three balanced lines and the fourth line is very capable. We have more depth in every position then we have ever had." The Falcons averaged only 2.81 goals a game last year, but with 13 of the top 16 scorers back, that average looks to improve.

The Falcon top scorer, senior forward Lindsay O'Keefe, had 10 goals and 11 assists last year for a team leading 22 points. She was named to the second All-NCHA team. Senior Lou Paulson is another big point contributor.   She led her team in goals with 13 and was right behind O'Keefe in points with 19. Paulson was also named to the All-NCHA team in 2004 and 2005. Leah Baron had a total of eight goals and nine assists for a total of 17 points.

The NCHA has always been notably tough, but Cranston is looking at three teams in particular. "We are getting ready for a stronger conference this year, particularly Stevens Point, Superior, and Eau Claire. Every year it gets better."

River Falls received two first place votes and were chosen second in the NCHA preseason Coaches Poll. Stevens Point was chosen first with four votes.   Superior was chosen third and Eau Claire came in fourth while Finlandia and Lake Forest tied for fifth.

In the USCHO Poll, UWRF did not make the top 10, but they did receive 11 votes.

Cranston has an 85-60-90 career record at UWRF and was named the NCHA Coach of the Year in 2003.
