^ NCHA Third Place 2005-2006 UW-River Falls Preview
The 2005-06 Falcon women's hockey team looks for a season of improvement with several key players back and some outstanding first year players in the lineup.
"I think we will be a much-improved team, returning 16 players," Falcon Coach Joe Cranston said. "Last year we were pretty young, and those players returning should be able to step it up and contribute right away. This team has the most depth of any team we have ever had."
Goaltending is always a big concern for every team and the Falcons have four goalies on the roster this year. Gone is Marlene Yaeger who was an AHCA West All-American and the NCHA's Co-Player of the Year in 2003. Amber Lindner returns with the most collegiate experience. In 24 career games she has a 15-4 record with a 1.64 goals against average, a .924 saves percentage and four shutouts. "Goaltending looks to be real solid," predicted Cranston, who starts his seventh season with the Falcons. "Amber Lindner will be our "go to" goalie, but our other goalies look good as well."
The Falcons return four veteran defensemen led by Jenny Wallace who was named an AHCA West All-American last year. She scored seven goals and a team-leading 13 assists. She finished eighth in the NCAA Div. III in power-play goals with six. "Our defensive core is the best we have ever had," said Cranston, who has an 85-60-9 career record at UWRF. "We have four returning defensemen and three freshmen who will step in and contribute right away."
The team's weakness in 2005 was a lack of scoring. The Falcons were shutout five times and went through one stretch scoring only four goals in seven games. The Falcons averaged 2.81 goals a game. Part of the problem was youth but that's not the case in 2005-066. Returning are the team's top 13 scorers. Leading the way are senior forwards Lindsay O'Keefe, Lou Paulson and Leah Baron. O'Keefe led the Falcons with 22 points (10-12). She was named to the second All-NCHA team. Paulson, who has been named to the All-NCHA team in 2004 and 2005, led the team with 13 goals and had 19 points. Baron finished fourth in scoring with eight goals and 17 points. "Last year scoring was one of our biggest problems, and I think this year's team will be able to produce more scoring," said Cranston, who was named the NCHA Coach of the Year in 2003.
