2005 Falcon Players of the Week

Offense: Midfielder Betsy Straub (Fr., Rosemount, Minn.) had two strong contests for the Falcons in the team's tie with UW-Stout and win at UM-Morris. She scored the only goal for the Falcons at 29:31 against UW-Stout. Straub put in a header on a cross from Sarah Carlson for her second goal of the season. Straub has been a utility player for the Falcons, filling in at defense and midfield this season. "No matter what the role, she comes out and really performs," Falcon Coach Sean McKuras said. Straub, 5-5, finished the regular season with two goals and two assists.
Defense: Midfielder Julie Sperstad (So., Eau Claire, Wis. Memorial HS) had two strong games in helping the Falcons to a tie with UW-Stout and a win at UM-Morris. She scored a goal and had an assist and continued playing excellent defense for the Falcons. Against UM-Morris Sperstad scored the opening goal, and assisted on a goal by Amy Jensen, to help lead the Falcons to a 3-1 victory. "She put on a great performance against Stout and then showed her offensive skills at UM-Morris, scoring one of the best goals of the season," Falcon Coach Sean McKuras said. Sperstad, 5-9, finished the regular season two goals and two assists. |

Offense: Forward Kelly Piersak (Fr., Shoreview, Minn. Mounds View HS) scored her sixth goal of the season in the team's 4-1 win at St. Catherine on Saturday. Piersak scored the first goal of the game. "She is a very consistent performer," Coach Sean McKuras said. Piersak is third on the team in points with 17. She has six goals and five assists. "Each game she becomes more and more affective," McKuras said.
Defense: Defender Ashley Peterson (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn. Forest Lake HS) anchored the defense in the Falcons 4-1 victory at St. Catherine on Saturday afternoon. Peterson is part of a defense that has allowed three goals in the last five games. "Her ability to read the game really helps her," Coach Sean McKuras said. |

Offense: Midfielder Amy Jensen (Jr., Plymouth, Minn. Kennedy HS) led the Falcon attack in two WIAC matches at UW-Platteville and UW-La Crosse. She finished the weekend with eight shots and four were on goal. Against UWP she had three shots on goal. "Amy creates a lot of opportunities," Falcon Coach Sean McKuras said.
Defense: Midfielder Julie Sperstad (So., Eau Claire, Wis. Memorial HS) helped anchor the defense for the Falcons this weekend in WIAC matches at UW-Platteville and UW-La Crosse. She was part of a defense that held UWP to one goal and UWL scoreless for 120 minutes. She also contributed offensively with two shots against UWL. "[She] performs well in tough situations," Falcon Coach Sean McKuras said. |

Offense: Midfielder Maranda Simonet (Jr., River Falls, Wis.) helped with the Falcon attack this week in a 1-0 loss at Eau Claire and a 0-0 tie at St. Benedict. Simonet had one shot in the tie with St. Ben's. The shot was on goal. "She put on constant pressure from the outside midfield position," Coach Sean McKuras said.
Defense: Defender Ashley Peterson (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn. Forest Lake HS) led the defensive front in a 1-0 loss at Eau Claire and a 0-0 tie at St. Benedict last week. She also finished with a shot against Eau Claire. "She is a constant competitor for our team," Coach Sean McKuras said. |

Offense: Forward Sarah Carlson (Sr., Plymouth, Minn. Armstrong HS) finished the week with three goals and three assists in Falcon victories over UW-Superior and UW-Stevens Point. At Superior, Carlson scored a goal and assisted on three others, in the team's 7-0 win. In the Falcons first victory, 2-1, in school history over Stevens Point Carlson scored both goals for the Falcons, including the game winner in the 85 th minute. Carlson leads the team with nine goals and nine assists for 27 points. "She's having an impact all over the field,"Falcon Coach Sean McKuras said.
Defense: Defender Tracy Olson (So., Rosemount, Minn.) played two excellent matches for the Falcons in the team's two WIAC wins last week. She assisted on the winning goal in the Falcon 2-1 victory over Stevens Point on Saturday and helped lead the Falcons to a 7-0 victory at UW-Superior. The Falcons defeated Superior with Olsen on the defense and on Saturday the Falcons defeated Stevens Point for the first time in school history. Olsen played all 90 minutes in both games. "She's developing into one of the best defenders in the WIAC," Falcon Coach Sean McKuras said. |

Offense: Diana Hermes (Fr., Prior Lake, Minn.) came on strong this week at the forward position. She scored a goal and assisted on another in the Falcons 4-0 victory over Luther College on Wednesday afternoon. Hermes scored the first goal of the game off of a rebound of her own shot and later assisted on a goal by Sarah Carlson. "She's coming out and making an impact," Falcon Coach Sean McKuras said.
Defense: Ashley Peterson (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn. Forest Lake HS) continued her steady play at sweeper this week, helping lead the Falcons to two shutouts. The two shutouts this week gave the Falcons five on the season, all with Peterson at the sweeper position. "She's such a smart player," Coach Sean McKuras said. "She reads the game really well." |

Offense: Forward Sarah Carlson (Sr., Plymouth, Minn. Armstrong HS) had two assists and a goal this weekend in WIAC games against Oshkosh and Whitewater. "She's creating big goals and also scoring big goals," Falcon Coach Sean McKuras said. Carlson assisted on both goals in the Falcons 2-1 victory over Whitewater on Saturday afternoon and scored the second goal in a 3-2 loss to Oshkosh on Friday afternoon. She leads the team with four goals, six assists and 14 points.
Defense: Midfielder Julie Sperstad (So., Eau Claire, Wis. Memorial HS) scored the game-winning goal at 88:33 in the Falcons victory over UW-Whitewater Saturday afternoon at Ramer Field. She has also been a part of a solid defensive unit that has only been behind for a cumulative 33:42 in the entire season. "She gets better by the game," Falcon Coach Sean McKuras said. |

Offense: Forward Sarah Carlson (Sr., Plymouth, Minn. Armstrong HS) scored two goals and assisted on two more, helping lead the Falcons to victories over St. Olaf (1-0) and St. Scholastica (5-0). Carlson leads the team with 10 points, despite the fact that she is targeted by opponents in every game. "Defenses hone in on her and she has to work twice as hard, yet she still finds ways to excel," Falcon Coach Sean McKuras said. Carlson scored the first two goals in the win over St. Scholastica and assisted on the only goal in the Falcon victory against St. Olaf.
Defense: Goalie Hannah Tvedt (So., Byron, Minn.) finished the week with shutouts over St. Olaf (1-0) and St. Scholastica (5-0) and now has three shutouts on the season. "She is a superb athlete; her athleticism has proven to be a positive for us." Falcon Coach Sean McKuras said. Tvedt has not allowed a goal since 28:34 in the first half of the first game of the season against Carleton. She has gone 287:26 without allowing a goal. Tvedt has five career shutouts. She made four saves against St. Olaf and two against St. Scholastica. |

Offense: Midfielder Kim Saufl (Jr., Champlin, Minn. Champlin Park HS) played her first game for the Falcons and she scored goals in both Falcon wins last week. She got the game-winning goal at 72:42 in a 2-1 win over Carleton and she scored the team's fourth goal in a 4-0 win over Bethel. "Kim scored a game-winning goal and it's nice to see her in a River Falls uniform," Falcon Coach Sean McKuras said.
Defense: Defender Amy Piersak (So., Shoreview, Minn. Mounds View HS) played two solid games defensively and help the Falcons offensively also. She scored the game-winning goal, at 8:57, in the team's 4-0 win over Bethel. "Amy's off to a great start for us," Falcon Coach Sean McKuras said. |
