Falcons Unable to Score Against NCHA Champs

Feb. 5, 2005

The Falcons women's hockey team went scoreless against UW-Stevens Point with a finale score of 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Hunt Arena.

This score was an improvement from the previous 3-0 loss suffered the last time these two teams played. It was yesterday that the Pointers won the NCHA title when they played at Superior.

Despite their scoreless performance, the Falcons did not give this game up without a fight. The first period saw no scoring from either team. Lou Paulson made a daring attempt at a score when she flew down the rink in a one on one situation, but was unable to get the puck across the goal line

The Pointers scored their first goal at 1:56 of the second period. Their second goal came late in the third period at 14:27.

Tempers flared in the third period and emotions were running high. The Falcons called a timeout at 18:57 where they decided to pull senior goalie Marlene Yaeger. This was Yaeger’s last home game, her record is now 5-8-0. Immediately after the Falcon timeout Stevens Point took one. Shooting from both sides remained pretty even throughout the game with the Pointers holding a slight 24-21 advantage.

There were a lot of close calls in this game with a rush of players at the goal, but for some reason the Falcons couldn’t get a point. Coach Joe Cranston commented, "we played well. I don’t know why we couldn’t get a goal."

This game marks the last home game of the season and the Falcons will play their next game on Tuesday at St. Olaf. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.

Falcons Top UWEC, 3-1

Feb. 4, 2005

It took four tries, but the Falcon women's hockey team finally defeated UW-Eau Claire, 3-1, Friday night at Hunt Arena.

UW-Eau Claire wasn’t going to give this game up without a fight, however, and tonight’s game proved to be a battle.

Both teams came out ready to play, but it was Falcon Leah Baron who scored the first goal late in the first period. She scored on a 5-4 power play with assists from Jenny Wallace and Linsday O’Keefe at 18:14. Falcons went 1-4 on power play opportunities.

During the second period, Baron scored an unassisted goal at 3:12. It was her seventh goal of the season. Later in the period the Falcons got a scare when goalie Amber Linder lost her stick. It was a mad dash to get the puck, but the Falcons played tough and were able to clear the puck without any damage.

The Blugolds came out in the third period with a rush of urgency as they managed to score from just in front of the net just 26 seconds into the period. Coach Joe Cranston commented, "that could have thrown us, but we kept playing good." He’s right because it was Lou Paulson who answered right back with a goal of her own at 2:48 with both a Falcon and a Blugold in the penalty box. It was Paulson's team leading 12th goal of the season.

When asked how it felt to finally defeat UW-Eau Claire, Coach Cranston commented that, "It’s great. We did what he had to do to win."

Amber Lindner played a great game in goal. She blocked 28 out of 29 and improved her record to 5-3-0.

The Falcons, now 10-10-0 overall and 5-3-0 in the NCHA, will be playing at the Hunt Arena on Saturday against Stevens Point. The puck will drop at 4:05 p.m. UWSP is in first place in the NCHA and has an 18-2 overall record.

And making her first appearance on the rink was freshman Mandi Mohwinkle. She made eight saves and did, "a great job" according to Coach Joe Cranston.

Cranston liked the way his team played, but felt it took them two periods to warm up since they didn’t have practice the day before, "We played a good third period. We really buried some pucks and we haven’t been doing that."

Nov. 12, 2004

The women’s hockey team had another big win over Bethel University with a 8-1 victory. They had another consistent game scoring two goals in the first period, three goals in the 2nd, and another three in the 3rd.

The 1st goal of the game was made at 12:41 by Leah Baron with some help from Renae Bergh. Kelly Hurley had the next goal at 19:23 when she received assists from Emily Nierenhausen and Jenny Wallace.

Hurley scored again at the beginning of the 2nd period when Lindsay O’Keefe set her up for the 3rd score of the game. That made Hurley the leading scorer for the night. Bethel got their first goal in the middle of the 2nd period, but the Falcons fired right back 4 minutes later when Nierenhausen scored in a power play with assists from Lou Paulson and Jenna Scanlon. Bergh came in with 47 seconds left on the clock to put in one more unassisted goal.

It was all Falcons after that as they silenced the Royals with three more goals. Kelly Jensen came in right away to score 1:58 into the first period with an assist from Kacie Anderson. Jenny Wallace had her first goal for the night when she scored on a power play at 8:53 with Paulson giving her 2nd assist for the night. Jenny Kern had the final goal for the Falcons at 15:35 with some help from Wallace to finish the game 8-1.

Sophomore goalie Amber Linder played all 60 minutes and stopped 17 out of 18 shots for the night and improved her record to 2-0.

This Falcon team is soundly dominating every opponent it has had so far, Coach Joe Cranston explained how his team does it. "We’re generating a lot of offense and the defense is scoring which opens a lot of things up. We’re doing this every game and it has been our key to winning."
The Falcons will travel to Gustavus Aldolphus on Saturday, the puck will drop at 2:05 p.m.

Falcons First Home Game is a Shutout

Nov. 6, 2004

The Falcons women hockey team's first home game was also their first shut out as they beat the St. Benedict Blazers, 7-0. They played consistant all the way through scoring three goals in the first period, three goals in the second, and one goal in the third.

Freshman Kelly Jensen started the team off early, scoring the first two goals. "We got the jitters out from the game before and were able to dominate this game." Coach Joe Cranston commented afterwards. Goalie Marlene Yaeger had her 11th career shutout and even contributed to the scoring by giving an assist to Renae Bergh who scored the team's fifth goal at 5:30 of the second period. Yaeger made 13 saves in the game.

This team is proving to be a threat from every position on the ice. Defense is able to keep the puck down on the other end of the ice, while the offense is having little trouble finding open shots. The Falcons out shot the Blazers 51-13 and had similar results last night when they outshot St. Catherine 60-10.

The Falcons will host Bethel, Friday at the Hunt Arena at 7:05 p.m.
