2004 Preview
The 2004 Falcon volleyball team will have to rely on several new faces
on the court after eight seniors graduated from the 2003 team that tied
for first in the WIAC.
The cupboard is hardly bare with the return of nine letter winners and
seven others who played with the Falcon junior varsity program in 2003.
Five new players to the program could also help.
The Falcons do have four seniors returning. Hitter Nina Petersen is,
"one of the premier players in the WIAC," according to Falcon
Coach Patti Ford. She was named to the first All-WIAC team and earned
honorable mention to the AVCA All-Midwest Region squad in 2003. Petersen
finished with 379 kills, third on the team. She had a .238 hitting percentage.
She had 114 digs and 102 blocked shots, third on the team. Logan Kiesch
and Melissa Jude return as outside hitters. Kiesch finished with 314 kills,
44 service aces, 451 digs and 57 total blocks. Jude had 33 kills, 59 digs
and five blocks and played in 11 matches. Gina Anderson is the fourth
senior returning. In 2002 she played in 16 matches and had 44 kills, 24
digs and 22 blocks. She plays middle hitter.
Katheryn Krtnick returns for her second season and she can play several
positions including outside hitter, setter and libero. She finished with
58 kills and 423 digs. Kiah Sagami also returns as a middle hitter. "Kiah
is a player who will be better and better every time she's out there,"
said Ford. Andrea Geehan is a third middle who played well as a freshman
in 2003. She had 60 kills and 19 blocks in 27 matches. Twin sisters, Katie
and Molly Thompson, also had solid first years in 2003. They give the
Falcons plenty of depth at the outside hitter spot. Both played well in
limited action in 2003.
Middle hitter Melissa Tvrdik is a big loss in the Falcon lineup. She
was the WIAC's Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete in 2003. Outside
hitter Krystle Brune is also gone and she is the school's all-time leader
in kills (1,707). Tvrdik was named to the first AVCA All-American team
and Brune was named to the third team.
"One of the things that River Falls has going in a transition year
like this is that we've built a strong tradition," said Ford. "We
have key players back and all have solid playing experience. There's a
question as to who will run the offense. I have no reservations with the
players we have back. It will be different for us, but that's the case
when a team graduates eight players. But UWRF has a strong reputation
in the WIAC. Everyone knows we will put together a solid team."
