Falcons Host Stout in Homecoming Game
The Falcons host UW-Stout on Saturday in the annual Homecoming Game at Ramer Field. Action will start at 1 p.m.

The Blue Devils of UW-Stout and 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the WIAC while the Falcons are 1-5 overall and also 1-2 in the WIAC.

RF is coming off a 42-3 loss to Whitewater in the home opener last week. Stout is in a little more trouble as they have dropped their last two games, including losing their Homecoming Game last week to Stevens Point. The Blue Devils had ripped off three straight wins to open the season before the recent slide.

Both teams are part of five teams with 1-2 conference records at the bottom of the WIAC. This game carries significant importance, not just because the schools are 30 minutes apart but because the loser of this game will have its title hopes hurt. The Blue Devils have won the last four against the Falcons including a 21-13 victory last year in Menomonie.

Stout is No. 2 in the WIAC in total offense and will hope to take advantage of a River Falls defense that is ranked second to last in conference and has given up 35 plus points in four out of six games this season. The Blue Devils third rated rush offense puts up 222.4 yards per game and is led by sophomore halfback Ryan Englebert. He has 435 yards on 88 rushes with six touchdowns. Senior quarterback Nick Ohman is a big part of the running offense rushing for 423 yards on 74 carries and one TD. Englebert and Ohman are the fourth and fifth leading rushers in the WIAC. Both players rank below RF senior running back John Peterlik who is currently ranked second in rushing. Peterlik averages 109 yards per game and has 654 yards on 112 carries with five touchdowns. The senior is second in the WIAC with 150.8 all purpose yards per game. The River Falls rushing attack ranks first in the conference (263.2) while the Blue Devils are ranked fourth in run defense (139.4). It looks like another WIAC battle on the ground; which team controls the line of scrimmage and runs the ball effectively should have the upper hand.

Stout is ranked fourth in the WIAC in passing offense while River Falls is ranked first in passing efficiency. The only Falcon victory was also the only time that River Falls has thrown for over 100 yards in a game this season. Ohman is fourth in the conference in passing yards per game with 195, third in passing efficiency, 124.4, and second in total offense with 279.6. Neither team has a receiver in the top 10 in the conference in receptions or receiving yards per game. When it comes to stopping the pass RF is fourth (176.3) and Stout is fifth (179.6) in pass defense.

Both teams are in the negative when it comes to turnover margin. Both teams like to run more than pass, but both teams having passing capabilities so the passing games could play a factor in the outcome of this contest.

At one point this season the Falcon specialists were considered the strong point. But after the Falcons got their second blocked punt of the season returned for a touchdown last week it has been called a question mark. River Falls has also had a field goal blocked and returned for a TD this season. Stout enters this game leading the conference in punt returns with an average of 12.2 yards per return. Neither team has yet to run a kick off or punt return for a TD this season. RF sophomore kicker Spasimir Bodurski has hit 4-6 field goals and is perfect on extra points. Stout’s junior kicker Evan Larsen has missed two PATs and two field goals. If close, special teams could be the difference.

"Stout is very big on the offensive and defensive lines," Falcon Coach John O'Grady said. "They are struggling some by not putting a lot of points up. If we can correct the mistakes we've been making this is a game we can win."

On Saturday, Oct. 30 the Falcons will host UW-Oshkosh at 1 p.m. at Ramer Field.
