Falcons Host UW-Stevens Point in Parents Day Game
The Falcons end their 2004 season on Saturday when they host UW-Stevens Point in a WIAC game at Ramer Field. Kick off is set for 2 p.m.

The game has big implications because it is Senior Day for River Falls and the Pointers will be playing for a playoff berth and a WIAC title.

"They have a chance to go (to the playoffs), all they have to do is win our game," said Falcon Coach John O’Grady, "we’ve had great games with them here and certainly there isn’t anyone around here who is going to concede this thing. I feel we have a great game plan and I think we are going to play well."

UWSP (6-3, 4-2) is currently in a three way tie for first place with UW-La Crosse (5-3, 4-2) and UW-Whitewater (7-2, 4-2).

Due to injuries the Falcons will be starting their third different quarterback this year. Sophomore Andy Kolstad who began the year is out with a collarbone injury that he suffered against Whitewater and red shirt freshman Dave Affeldt is out due to an injury that happened late in second quarter last week against La Crosse. This all means that true freshman Tim Bittner will get the first start of his career. Last week Bittner played the entire second half under center, completing 1-3 passes for 29 yards and an interception. Bittner carried the ball two times for 23 yards. The freshman will not have to handle all of the QB duties, sophomore running back Jeremy Wolff will see time under center also. Wolff has thrown one pass this season and it was a 35-yard touchdown to senior running back John Peterlik. O’Grady said that they have been preparing Wolff to play quarterback for the past few weeks. When the two QBs put the ball in the air they will be facing a Pointer defense that has picked off the second most passes in the conference (13).

Regardless of who is under center the RF attack will rely on the WIAC’s best ground game (292.3 yards per game). The Stevens Point defense is rated third in the WIAC in rush defense (143.1 y/g). The key will be on Peterlik who is the conference's second leading rusher with 108.3 y/g. The senior captain has gone over 100 yards in three of the last four games including 111 yards on 15 carries last week in a 38-14 losss at La Crosse. Freshman fullback Nathan Anderson also put up over 100 yards last week (29 carries- 185 yards) for the fourth time in the last six games. The 185 yards is a career high for the freshman and is a single game high for a RF player this season. Anderson is the Falcons second leading rusher with a 147 attempts for 754 yards, and is fourth in the WIAC (94.2 y/g). No matter who is carrying the ball they better hang on to it. The Falcons fumbled the six times last week and have coughed it up in eight out of nine games this season. It bodes well for RF that Stevens Point has recovered the fewest number of fumbles in the WIAC.

When you flip it around the River Falls defense faces a Pointer offense that is second in the WIAC in total yards (443.7 y/g) and first in pass offense (283.7 y/g). The Pointer passing game is led by sophomore quarterback Brett Borchart. The sophomore has completed 192-326 for 2,439 yards with 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions to lead the WIAC in passing. Senior wide outs Kurt Kielbrock (50 receptions) and Tony Romano (48 receptions) lead the team and are third and fourth in the conference in receiving. River Falls is third in the WIAC in pass defense giving up an average of 166.6 yards per game. The Falcons have surrendered a conference worse 34.3 points per game. Stevens Point is not all passing, they average 160 yards on the ground each week. The Pointers primary rushing weapon is sophomore Cody Childs who has ran for 599 yards on 156 attempts this year (66.6 y/g). Borchart is the Pointers second leading rusher with 48.2 yards per game. "Their offense does concern me - it is a little bit like Oshkosh -, the quarterback will spread them out with formations and he will run the ball," said O’Grady. "He’s a 230 pound kid, he throws the ball well and they have a great running back - our defense has their work cut out for them." River Falls gives up a conference worst 236.6 yards per game on the ground and yielded a season high 347 rushing yards to La Crosse.
