Falcons Host Oshkosh in WIAC Game
The Falcons host UW-Oshkosh on Saturday in a WIAC game at Ramer Field. Kick off is set for 1 p.m.

This weeks meeting between River Falls (2-5, 2-2) and Oshkosh (4-3, 1-3) matches two teams headed in different directions. The Falcons have won two of their last three to pull within one game of the conference lead. The Titans have lost three of their last four and find themselves at the bottom of the WIAC.

Last week both teams found themselves down 10 points, but only River Falls came back to win, 28-10 over Stout. Oshkosh fought back to force overtime against Stevens Point but ended up losing 22-16 in the first overtime period.

The differences continue into the play callers. The Falcons have red shirt freshman Dave Affeldt under center. Affeldt played his first full game last week against Stout since sophomore Andy Kolstad, who split time with Affledt, went down with a season ending collarbone injury against Whitewater. Falcon offensive coordinator Tim Taylor said Affeldt read every play perfectly in the second half last week. Affeldt did not
throw a pass but ran for 84 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. On the season he is RF’s third leading rusher with 181 yards and four touchdowns on 45 rushes.

Oshkosh has senior Nick Wara leading the offense. Wara is in his third season as the Titans starting quarterback. This season the senior leads the Titans in rushing (312 yards) and passing (1222 yards). Wara averages 174.6 yards per game in the air and has completed 49 percent of his passes while throwing six touchdowns and six interceptions. The senior spreads the ball around to four wide outs who each have 12 or more catches this season. Leading the group is sophomore Chad LaLuzerne with 21 receptions for 336 yards and one touchdown. At 6-4 LaLuzerne could pose a matchup problem for Falcon starting cornerbacks sophomore Matt Jordan (5-7) and junior Roman Johnson (5-9). Wara is fourth in the WIAC in total offense and the Titans are the WIAC scoring leader (35.4). The RF defense allows the most points in the conference (34.7).

When it comes to stopping the pass the Falcons are fourth in passing yards allowed per game (176.3) and the Titans are third (168.1). River Falls does give up the highest passing efficiency to opposing QB’s (126.9) while Oshkosh gives up the lowest (89.5). River Falls did limit Stout’s senior Nick Ohman to 59 yards in the air in the second half and picked him off twice last week.

When it comes to stopping the Falcon passing attack it is hit or miss because sometimes they don’t throw at all. It has been tough for opponents to defend the Falcons since three players have thrown touchdown passes this fall. Affeldt and running backs John Peterlik and Jeremy Wolff have all thrown a touchdown pass. So RF may not put it in the air much, but when they do it usually is a big play.

Opponents do know they have to stop the Falcon running game. River Falls conference best running game (265.6) will go up against the Titans third ranked rush defense (112.3). The Falcons leading rusher, Peterlik, is No. 2 in the WIAC (98.4). Backfield mate, freshman Nathan Anderson, is fifth in the conference (79.5).

The Titan running game ranks fifth and is led by Wara’s 44.6 per game average and five rushing touchdowns. Wara gets help on the ground from junior halfback Andrew Stern (42) and sophomore halfback Andy Moriarty who has put up 306 yards on 64 carries and three TDs in four games.

The Falcon defensive is coming off one of their best performances of the year registering four turnovers, six tackles for a loss, three sacks and holding Stout to 145 rushing yards on 43 carries. The Falcos have not allowed an opposing single back to go over 100 yards in two out of their last three games.

If is a typical WIAC matchup than it will be close, which means kickers could decide the game. Oshkosh’s freshman Lucas Raschke has hit 13-14 field goals to lead the WIAC. The Falcons sophomore Spasimir Bodurski is 4-6 on the season and is perfect on extra points. Bodurski is the only kicker in conference to not miss an extra point this season.

On Saturday, Nov. 5 the Falcons will travel to UW-La Crosse for a 1 p.m. game.
