Falcons Open WIAC Play at Eau Claire
The Falcons open their 2004 WIAC season on Saturday playing at UW-Eau Claire. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. at Carson Park

The Blugolds (2-1, 0-1) are coming off a lost to Whitewater(4-0, 1-0), but will be fired up for their homecoming game. The Falcons hope to get their first conference win as well as their first overall win this weekend.

The Blugolds managed only 132 yards of total offense in their 12-7 home loss to Whitewater. The Falcons are coming of a 28-24 loss at Pacific Lutheran.

Both teams will look to their workhorse running backs to lead the way. The Falcons are led by senior John Peterlik who leads the WIAC in total offense and is second in the conference in rushing. Peterlik has 374 yards on 58 attempts and four touchdowns. The Blugolds will look to junior Joe Gast to carry the load. Gast has carried the ball 52 times for 176 yards and three touchdowns. Both backs will have help, for Gast it’s senior quarterback Nels Fredrickson. Fredrickson has completed 41-82 passes for 420 yards, three TDs, and three interceptions. Peterlik will get help from sophomore QB Andy Kolstad, but in multiple areas. Kolstad is the brains in the option offense. He has rushed for 82 yards on 39 carries as well as thrown for 179 yards and one touchdown on 9-14 passing. Sophomore running back Jeremy Wolff will play a significant role, he is the Falcons leading receiver with five catches for 129 yards and one TD. Wolff has also ran the ball 19 times for 103 yards. Senior tight end Don Kahl seems to be Fredrickson’s favorite target as he leads the Blugolds with 12 catches for 84 yards and two touchdowns.

The Eau Claire and River Falls defenses are coming off impressive performances. In the past two games the Blugolds have given up a combined 19 points. So far this season EC has held its opponents under 100 yards rushing twice and under 100 yards passing once. The Blugolds will have to improve on the 204 rushing yards they gave up to Whitewater last week. Blugold junior cornerback Derek Sikora leads the team in tackles with 30 as well as solo tackles with 17. Senior defensive end Brent Crank is Eau Claire's sack leader with two.

The Falcon defense is coming of its best performance of the season. RF picked off its first two passes of the season and held a team under 30 points for the first time all year. Now remember that RF had to go up against two Div. II opponents before last week's contest at PLU. The Falcons had a season high 11 tackles behind the line of scrimmage last week. River Falls held PLU to 176 yards rushing and 122 yards passing, both season lows. Sophomore safety O’Neal Hampton leads the Falcon defense with 18 tackles, seven solo. Senior linebacker Ben Gillett was RF’s leading tackler with 17, but was out of last week's game with an injury. Junior cornerback Roman Johnson returned last week off of an injury and made an impact with two pass breakups and one tackle for a loss. The Falcon defense will look to keep improving this week against the Blugolds.

The bright point of the River Falls season became the weak point last week. The once reliable RF special teams had a field goal blocked and returned for a touchdown and allowed two kick offs to be returned for TDs, even though both returns were called back because of penalties. So far this season Eau Claire's longest kick or punt return has been 24 yards. RF's sophomore kicker Spasimir Bodurski is 2-4 in field goals with a long of 37. Eau Claires junior kicker Andy Schneider has made his only attempt of the year from 24 yards.

With run oriented offenses, field position is a factor and punting plays a big part. RF’s sophomore punter Jovin Kroll averages 34.6 yards per punt with a long of 54. Kroll has put two inside the 20 and has had only one punt go into the end zone. The Blugolds freshman punter, Mitch Schaeuble, has put eight inside the 20 while averaging 42.5 yards per punt. Neither punter has had any blocked.
