2003 Falcon Players of the Week |
|
Oct. 13, 2003 Singles: No. 3 player Megan Knobloch (So., Marshfield, Wis.
Columbus HS) played a solid match in the team's meet at UW-La Crosse
on Saturday. She defeated her opponent, 6-0, 6-2, to raise her overall
record to 8-6 on the year. "Megan just demolished her opponent,"
Falcon Coach Lee Lueck said. "She played a very solid match. She's
been working hard on her game and has made great improvements throughout
the year. Megan's had a great attitude and has been willing to make changes
in her game to become a better player."
Singles: Amber Weissinger (Jr., Eau Claire, Wis. North HS) won both matches she played to help the Falcons to two wins last week. One of the wins came against UW-Oshkosh, 5-4, in a WIAC match. Normally the team's No. 5 singles player, Weissinger moved up to the No. 4 spot due to an injury. She defeated her Oshkosh opponent, 6-3, 6-3 and her Hamline opponent, 6-3, 6-2. "Amber played a very tough Oshkosh opponent and came out with the win," Coach Lee Lueck said. "She's shown the will to change her game. She plays aggressive and has a hitting out attitude. She's been doing this the last couple of matches. She is a fighter who tracks down balls on every point." Doubles: The No. 3 team of Sarah VandenHoek (Fr., Elk River,
Minn.) and Becky Briese (Fr., Roseau, Minn.) played very well
in the two matches they competed in last week. They won an 8-3 decision
over a Hamline team, and lost a tight 9-8 (9-2) decision to an Oshkosh
team. "They lost in a tie breaker in a great match against an Oshkosh
team that had their No. 1 singles player competing," Coach Lee Lueck
said. "They have played well as a team."
Singles: Leah Baron (So., Hermantown, Minn.) had a perfect week in helping the Falcons win three matches, including a win in WIAC play against UW-Stout. Playing at No. 4, she defeated a Winona opponent, 6-0, 6-0, a Stout opponent, 6-0, 6-0 and a St. Scholastica opponent, 6-1, 6-0. She finished with a 36-1 record in games for the week. Doubles: The Falcon No. 3 doubles team of Sarah VandenHoek
and Becky Briese finished the week undefeated with a 3-0 record.
They defeated a Winona team, 9-7, a Stout team, 8-6 and a St. Scholastica
team, 8-2. "They were behind, 7-4, against Winona and came back to
tie it at 7-7. They then worked harder and won 9-7," Coach Lee Lueck
said. "It was a great comeback at Winona to give us two of three
doubles points. Both players match up well with each other to form a solid
doubles team."
Singles: No. 3 singles player Megan Knobloch (So., Marshfield,
Wis. Columbus HS) won two of three singles matches for the Falcons
last week as the team won all three matches. In a WIAC match, she came
back to defeat her UW-Stevens Point opponent, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. She also
took an 8-5 win over her Bethel opponent. "Over the past couple of
weeks Megan has played several three set matches," Coach Lee Lueck
said. "She lost a couple of those and a player can lose confidence
in those situations. She was faced with another three set match against
Stevens Point. But to Megan's credit, and with everyone watching, she
came through with a win. It's very gratifying that she's overcome the
adversity and has stayed strong mentally." Sept. 15, 2003 Singles: No. 6 singles player Becky Briese (Fr., Roseau, Minn.)
picked up two more wins and remains undefeated this year for the Falcons.
On Friday Briese defeated her Ripon opponent, 6-3, 6-1 and on Saturday
in a WIAC match at UW-Whtiewater she picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win. "Becky
has an excellent attitude," Falcon Coach Lee Lueck. "She loves
to be in pressure situations and is very comfortable playing at No. 6
singles for us."
Singles: Jordan Anderson (Sr., Winona, Minn.) and Amanda Gray
(Sr., Princeton, Minn.) both won all three matches they played last
weekend. Anderson played at No. 1 singles and Gray at No. 2. Anderson's
biggest win came on Friday at St. Norbert. With the match tied, 4-4, she
took a 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 win over her opponent to secure the team win. Against
Lawrence she won, 6-0, 6-1 and against Edgewood she won, 6-3, 6-0. Gray
also had three solid matches. Playing at No. 2 singles, she took a 6-3,
6-4 win at St. Norbert, a 6-1, 6-1 win at Lawrence and a 6-1, 6-1 win
against Edgewood. |
