Falcons Lose to UWL in WIAC Tourney

The Falcon softball team dropped a 4-1 decision to UW-La Crosse in the WIAC Tournament played Saturday in River Falls.

The loss ends the Falcon season. UWRF finished 20-22.

UWRF scored one run on four hits and made one error. UWL scored four runs on eight hits and made one error. The Falcons scored their run in the third. UWL scored three times in the fourth and and once in the fifth. Michelle Heuser led the Falcons at the plate going 2-2. The big hit for UWL was a two-run homer by Carley Anderson in the fourth. Leah Vanderploeg started on the mound for the Falcons and took the loss. She worked three and two-thirds innings and allowed three earned runs. She walked one and struck out five. Devanie Bigalk worked the final three and one-third innings and allowed three hits and one earned run. She walked one and struck out one.

Falcons Finish 2-1 in First Day of WIAC Tourney

The Falcon softball team finished with a 2-1 record in the first day of the WIAC Tournament being played in River Falls.

The Falcons topped Platteville, 7-2 and Eau Claire, 1-0, before losing to Whitewater, 4-2.

The Falcons opened with a 7-1 win over Platteville in an early elimination game. The Falcons were seeded ninth and played eighth seeded UWP with the loser eliminated from the tourney. UWRF scored seven runs on 10 hits and made one error. UWP scored one run on four hits and they committed one error. UWRF scored two in the second, four in the fifth and one in the seventh. UWP scored its run in the seventh. Emily Rodgers was 3-4 with two runs scored and she had a triple. Leah Vanderploeg was 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. She had a double. Devanie Bigalk was 2-3 with two RBIs, she also doubled. Vanderploeg pitched five innings and allowed only two hits. She struck out four. Bigalk worked the final two innings and allowed two hits and one earned run. She struck out one. The Falcon pitchers did not allow a walk.

The Falcons then beat the tourney's No. 1 seeded team, UW-Eau Claire, 1-0. UWRF scored the game's only run in the third. Bigalk led off with a single to left and Jamie Falck pinch ran. She advanced to second on an infield out. She later scored when Anna Poluter reached on an errror. UWRF scored its run on only two hits and they made no errors. UWEC was limited to three hits and made one error. Vanderploeg went the distance on the mound to get the win. She walked two and struck out nine. Melissa Turbak had the other Falcon hit.

Against Whitewater the Falcons scored two runs on seven hits and made no errors. UWW scored four runs on seven hits and made one error. UWRF scored two runs in the first and UWW countered with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Vanderploeg was 2-3 with one RBI. Poulter was 2-3 with a run scored. Emily Evans was 1-3 with one RBI. Bigalk started on the mound and worked four and one-third innings and allowed five hits and two earned runs. She walked one and struck out two. Vanderploeg pitched the final one and two-thirds innings and allowed two earned runs. She walked two and struck out one and took the loss.

UWRF, now 20-21 overall, will play La Crosse at 9 a.m. on Saturday. If the Falcons lose, they will be eliminated from the tourney. A win would put the Falcons in a game at 11 a.m. against the Stout-Eau Claire winner. The Stout-Eau Claire game is also being played at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Falcons Split at WIAC Cluster Tourney

The Falcon softball team split in two games at the WIAC Cluster Tourney played in La Crosse Monday afternoon.

The Falcons lost to Stevens Point, 2-1, but came back to beat Oshkosh, 7-6, in eight innings.

Against Stevens Point the Falcons scored one run on five hits and UWSP scored twice on six hits. There were no errors in the game. UWSP scored runs in the first and seventh and the Falcons got their run in the second. Emily Evans, who finished 2-3, hit a solo hoemr for the Falcons only run. Leah Vanderploeg was also 2-3. Breamber Syverson had the other Falcon hit. Vanderploeg went the distance on the mound and took the loss. She allowed two earned runs and struck out two.

Against Oshkosh the Falcons trailed 6-0 after one inning, but came back to scored the winning run in the top of the eighth. Anna Poulter reached on an error and stole second. Evans then singled her home with the winning run. The Falcon scored seven runs on 13 hits and made no errors. UWO scored six runs on six hits and made three errors. UWO jumped out to a 6-0 first inning lead helped by a three-run homer by Anne Stanislawski. UWRF scored single runs in the third and eighth, three in the fourth and two to tie it in the sixth. Melissa Turbak hit a three-run homer in the fourth to cut the Titan lead to 6-4. Poulter, who stole four bases, finished 3-4 with three runs scored and one RBI. Evans was also 3-4. Turbak finished 2-5 with a run scored and four RBIs. Vanderploeg got the win in relief after working the final seven and one-third innings. She allowed just one hit, walked none and struck out six.

UWRF, now 18-20 overall and 3-13 in the WIAC, will host the WIAC Tournament on Friday and Saturday at the River Falls High School fields. The Falcons will play Platteville at 9 a.m. on Friday in a play-in game. UWRF split two games with the Pioneers this year. The Falcons beat UWP, 8-5, on April 17 and lost to the Pioneers, 6-0, on April 24.

Falcons Lose to UWW, UWP

The Falcon softball team lost two WIAC games at the first day of a WIAC Cluster Tourney held in La Crosse Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons lost to Whitewater, 2-1, and Platteville, 6-0.

Against Whitewater, the Warhawks scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. The Falcons scored one run on five hits and they made one error. UWW scored two runs on eight hits and made no errors. The Falcons scored in the third and UWW scored its other run in the fifth. Breamber Syverson finished 2-3 at the plate. Melissa Turbak was 1-3. She doubled home Carolyn Guisinger, who had singled to lead off the inning, for the Falcons only run. Emily Rodgers had the other Falcon hit. Leah Vanderploeg took the loss in relief. She worked one and two-thirds innings and allowed one unearned run. She allowed three hits and walked one. Devanie Bigalk started and worked five and a third innings. She allowed five hits and one earned run. She walked one and struck out three.

Against Platteville, UWRF was held scoreless and had only three hits. They made three errors. UWP scored six runs on 10 hits and played errorless ball. UWP scored three in the third, one in the fourth and two in the sixth. Turbak was 2-3 and Emily Evans was 1-2. Vanderploeg started and took the loss. She worked two and two-thirds innings and allowed three hits and three runs, only one was earned. She walked four and struck out two. Bigalk pitched the final four and one-third innings and allowed seven hits and three runs, two were earned. She struck out three.

UWRF, now 17-19 overall and 2-12 in the WIAC, will finish its regular season play on Sunday in the second day of the WIAC Cluster Tourney at La Crosse. The Falcons play Oshkosh at 2:30 p.m. and Stevens Point at 4:30 p.m. at the Logan High School field.

Falcons Lose Two to UWS; Poulter Sets Two Records

The Falcon softball team lost two WIAC games to UW-Superior Friday afternoon at Ramer Field.

UWS won the first game, 17-4 and took the nightcap, 11-4

In the first game UWS scored 17 runs on 21 hits and made two errors. UWRF scored four runs on 10 hits and also made two errors. UWS blew the game open scoring eight runs in the seventh. Anna Poulter was 3-4 with a run scored and one RBI. Erin Wood was 2-3 with a RBI and a run scored. UWS hhit two home runs and three doubles in the game. Leah Vanderploeg took the loss on the mound and is now 7-4 this year. She worked four innings and allowed eight hits and seven earned runs. She walked one and struck out two. Molly Arends pitched the final three innings and allowed 13 hits. She allowed 10 runs, nine were earned. She walked one and struck out two. UWRF scored two in the first and single runs in the second and sixth. UWS scored two in the first, fourth and sixth, three in the third and eight in the seventh. The 17 runs allowed is the most by the Falcons since March 15, 1995 when Trenton beat the Falcons, 18-1.

In the second game UWS scored 11 runs on 15 hits and made one error. UWRF scored four runs on eight hits and made three errors. Once again Superior had a big seventh inning scoring six runs. They scored a single run in the fourth and four in the fifth. UWRF scored single runs in the first and fifth and two in he sixth. Emily Evans was 2-3 with two RBIs. Wood finished 2-3 with one RBI. Poulter was 1-2 witih two runs scored. Devanie Bigalk took the loss on the mound and is now 9-12. She worked four and two-thirds innings and allowed five earned runs on 10 hits. She struck out six and didn't walk a batter. Vanderploeg worked the final two and one-third innings and allowed five hits. She allowed six runs, four were earned. She walked one.

Poulter stole three bases in the first game and one in the second contest. She now has 47 stolen bases (in 50 attempts) this year. The 47 steals established UWRF and WIAC single season records. She broke the Falcon single season record of 44 set by Kristy Dudeck in 1994 and the WIAC single season record of 46 set by UW-Stout's Suzanne Brion in 1996. She now has 115 career stolen bases, also UWRF and WIAC career records.

UWRF, now 17-17 overall and 2-10 in the WIAC, will play in the second of two WIAC Cluster Tourneys this weekend at UW-La Crosse. Saturday the Falcons play Whitewater at 3 p.m. and Platteville at 5 p.m. Both games are at the UWLC campus field. On Sunday the Falcons play Oshkosh at 2:30 p.m. and Stevens Point at 4:30 p.m. at the Logan High School field.

Softball Team will Host Superior on Friday

The Falcon softball team will host UW-Superior on Friday at Ramer Field. The first pitch will be at 3 p.m.

The game was orginally scheduled for Thursday at UWS.

The Falcons, 17-15 overall and 2-8 in the WIAC, will play in the second of two WIAC Cluster tourney at UW-La Crosse on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday the Falcons play Whitewater at 3 p.m. and Platteville at 5 p.m. Both games are at the UWLC campus field. On Sunday the Falcons play Oshkosh at 2:30 p.m. and Stevens Point at 4:30 p.m. at the Logan High School field.

On April 30 and May 1 UWRF will host the WIAC Tournament. Pairings will be announced by Tuesday, April 27. Games will be played at the River Falls High School fields.

Falcons Lose Twice at WIAC Cluster Tourney

The Falcon softball team lost two games Sunday afternoon at the WIAC Cluster Tourney held at UW-Platteville.

The Falcons lost to Oshkosh, 11-6, and to Whitewater, 8-3.

Against Oshkosh the Falcons scored six runs on nine hits and made one error. UWO scored 11 times on 17 hits and they made two errors. UWRF scored twice in the first, third and fourth innings. UWO scored twice in the first and second innings, four times in the third and three more in the seventh. Emily Evans was 2-3 with two RBIs. Emily Rodgers was 2-4 with a run scored. Melissa Turbak finished 2-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Anna Poulter hit an inside the park homer and finished 1-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Her homer, the first of her career, came in the fourth with one runner on base. Devanie Bigalk took the loss on the mound in relief. She piched five innings and allowed 10 hits and seven earned runs. She walked one and struck out five. Leah Vanderploeg started, was pulled in the second innings but returned later. She pitched two innings and allowed four earned runs on seven hits.

Against UWW the Falcons scored three runs on nine hits and made no errors. UWW scored eight runs on 11 hits and made one error. UWRF scored single runs in the second, fourth and seventh. UWW scored three times in the fifth and sixth innings and single runs in the second and fourth. Turbak finished 3-4 with a run scored. Carolyn Guisinger was 2-3 with one RBI. Jassamy Schwartz and Bigalk also had RBIs. Bigalk started on the mound and took the loss. She is now 9-11 this year. She worked five and two-thirds innings and allowed 10 hits and eight earned runs. She walked two and struck out four. Vanderploeg pitched the last one and one-third innings and allowed one hit. She walked one and struck out two.

UWRF, now 17-15 overall and 2-8 in the WIAC, will play a WIAC double header at UW-Superior on Thursday with action starting at 3 p.m.

Falcons Top UWSP, UWP at WIAC Cluster Tourney

The Falcon softball team won both games played in the first day of a WIAC Cluster Tourney in Platteville Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons topped Stevens Point, 2-1, and came back later with an 8-5 win over Platteville.

In the win over UWSP, the Falcon scored two runs on six hits and made no errors. UWSP scored one run on seven hits and made no errors. UWRF scored single runs in the second and seventh innings. UWSP scored its run in the fourth. Six Falcons had hits; Anna Poulter (1-1), Melissa Turback (1-2); Emily Rodgers (1-4); Breamber Syverson (1-2), Leah Vanderploeg (1-) and Devanie Bigalk (1-1). All were singles except for Poulter who doubled. Poulter and Syverson scored the Falcon runs. Vanderploeg had a RBI. Vanderploeg started for the Falcons on the mound and worked four and two-thirds innings. She allowed five hits and one earned run. She walked two and struck out three. Bigalk picked up the win in relief and raised her record to 9-9. She worked two and one-third innings, walked one and struck out one.

In the win over UWP the Falcons scored eight runs on 10 hits and made three errors. UWP scored five runs on seven hits and made two errors. UWRF scored a single run in the third, three in the fifth and four in the seventh. UWP scored two runs in the first and third and one in the fourth. Jassamy Schwartz was 2-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. She kocked in two runs in the seventh. Poulter was 2-4 with two runs scored. Michelle Heuser was 3-3 with three runs scored and Syverson was 1-3 with two RBIs. Vanderploeg picked up the win in relief to raise her record to 7-3. She worked the final three innings and allowed three hits and no runs. Bigalk started and allowed four hits and five runs, three were earned. She walked two and struck out four.

UWRF, now 17-13 overall and 2-6 in the WIAC, will play Oshkosh at 8:30 a.m. and Whitewater at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Falcons Lose Twice at UWL

The Falcon softball team lost both games of a WIAC doubleheader played Tuesday afternoon at UW-La Crosse.

UWL won the first game, 3-0, and took the second game, 4-3.

In the first game the Falcons were held scoreless and they had four hits. UWRF made a season high five errors in the contest. UWL scored three runs on five hits and played errorless ball. UWL scored a single run in the fourth and two in the fifth. Carolyn Guisinger was 1-3 at the plate with a double. Anna Poulter was 1-3, Leah Vanderploeg and Michelle Heuser was both 1-2. Vanderploeg took the loss on the mound. She pitched six innings and allowed two earned runs. She didn't walk a batter and struck out one.She is now 6-3 this year.

In the second game the Falcons scored three runs on nine hits and made three errors. UWL scored four times on six hits and made two errors. UWRF scored a single run in the first and two in the fourth. UWL scored once in the first and three times in the third. Emily Evans and Heuser were both 2-3 at the plate. Heuser had two RBIs when she knocked in two runs in the fourth with a single. Poulter was 2-4 and stole two bases giving her 40 this year. Devanie Bigalk went the distance on the mound. In six innings she allowed four runs, two were earned. She walked two and struck out four. She is now 8-9 this year. The Eagles are now 11-12 overall and 2-2 in the WIAC.

The Falcons, now 15-13 overall and 0-6 in the WIAC, will play in the first of two WIAC Cluster Tournaments this weekend at UW-Platteville. Saturday the Falcons play Stevens Point at 11 a.m. and Platteville at 1 p.m. Sunday the Falcons play Oshkosh at 8:30 a.m. and Whitewater at 2:30 p.m.

Falcons Split Again at UWEC Tourney

The Falcon softball team split in two games again on Saturday at the UW-Eau Claire Tourney.

Saturday the Falcons opened with a 1-0 win over Northland, but then lost, 4-2, to St. Scholastica. On Friday the Falcons topped Hamline, 7-6, but lost to St. Scholastica, 5-2.

The Falcons scored the game's only run in the third to get the win over Northland. With one out Anna Poulter reached first on an infield hit and she stole second and third. Melissa Turbak lined a single off the Northland pitcher's glove to score Poulter. Poulter had the other Falcon hit. UWRF scored the one run one three hits and made oen error. Devanie Bigalk pitched a no-hitter through five and two-thirds innings. She allowed just two hits, singles in the sixth and seventh. She didn't walk a batter and struck out nine. She now has an 8-8 record this year.

Against St. Scholastica, the Falcons scored two runs on six hits and made three errors. CSS scored four runs on five hits and had one error. UWRF scored single runs in the second and sixth and CSS scored two runs in the third and fifth innings. Emily Evans hit a solo homer over the right field fence in the second for one of the Falcon runs. It was her second homer of the year. The Falcons scored the other run in the sixth when Jassemy Schwartz and Emily Rodgers singled with one out. They advanced a base on an out and Schwartz later scored on a passed ball. Michelle Heuser finished 2-3 at the plate and Breamber Syverson was 1-3. Leah Vanderploeg went the distance on the mound and took the loss. She is now 6-2. She allowed four earned runs, walked four and struck out four.

The Falcons, now 15-11 overall and 0-4 in the WIAC, will play a WIAC doubleheader at UW-La Crosse on Tuesday with the first pitch set to be thrown at 3 p.m.

Falcons Split at UWEC Tourney

April 9, 2004

The Falcon softball team split in two games played at the UW-Eau Claire Tournament held Friday.

The Falcons opened with a 7-6 win over Hamline, but lost a 5-2 decision to St. Scholastica.

Against Hamline the Falcons scored seven runs on nine hits and made no errors. HU scored six runs on 10 hits and made two errors. UWRF scored five times in the second and twice in the seventh. HU scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings and single runs in the second and seventh. Breamber Syverson finished 2-2 with a run scored. Jassemy Schwartz was 1-4 with a run scored and one RBI. Leah Vanderploeg was 1-2 with a run scored and two RBIs. Megan Blakeley and Carolyn Guisinger also had RBIs. Devanie Biglak got the win on the mound in relief of starter Leah Vanderploeg. Bigalk worked three innings, allowed three earned runs and seven hits. She struck out three and did not walk a batter. Vanderploeg worked four innings and allowed three earned runs. She allowed three hits and three walks and struck out one.

Against St. Scholastica, the Falcons scored two runs on seven hits and they made three errors. CSS scored five runs on nine hits and made two errors. UWRF scored single runs in the first and third and CSS scored three in the second and two in the fifth. Anna Poulter was 2-4 with a run scored. She tripled to lead off in the Falcon first and scored on a Schwartz ground out. Guisinger finished 2-3 with a run scored Vanderploeg was 1-2. Bigalk started the game and took the loss. She worked three innings and allowed four hits and three earned runs. She walked two and struck out two and now has a 7-8 record this year. Vanderploeg finished the game working four innings and allowing five hits. She allowed two runs, one was earned. She walked three and struck out four.

The Falcons, now 14-10 overall and 0-4 in the WIAC, will play in the UW-Eau Claire Tourney again on Saturday. The Falcons play Northland at 10 a.m. and have a rematch with St. Scholastica at noon at the Hobbs Field.

Falcons Lose Twice to Stout

April 8, 2004

The Falcon softball team lost both games of a WIAC doubleheader to UW-Stout Thursday afternoon at Ramer Field.

Stout won the first game, 7-1, and the second game, 3-1.

In the first game Stout scored seven runs on 14 hits and they made three errors. UWRF scored one run on six hits and made two errors. Stout scored three runs in the first, two in the third and single runs in the sixth and seventh. Emily Rodgers finished 2-3 with a run scored. Carolyn Guisinger was 1-3 with a RBI. Erin O’Connell had the big hit for the Blue Devils – a three run homer in the first. She finished 3-3 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBIs. Leah Vanderploeg took the pitching loss for UWRF – her first of the season. She went the distance and allowed six earned runs. She walked one and struck out four. She is now 6-1 this year. Megan Donley picked up the win for Stout. She also went the distance and allowed one earned run. She didn’t walk a batter and struck out one.

In the second game Stout scored three runs on nine hits and made one error with UWRF scored one run on six hits and also made one error. Stout scored twice in the third and a single run in the seventh. The Falcons scored in the fourth. Melissa Turbak was 2-3 at the plate with a run scored. Emily Evans, Breamber Syverson, Guisinger and Michelle Heuser also had hits for the Falcons. Stout, now 17-7 overall and 2-0 in the WIAC, got run scoring doubles by Kaela Wold and Courtney Zafft in the third. Devanie Bigalk took the loss on the mound for UWRF. She went the distance and allowed the three earned runs. She walked three and strcuk out two. She is now 6-7 on the year. Donley pitched the entire second game for the Blue Devils. She allowed just the one unearned run. She walked one. She is now 13-6 this year.

The Falcons, now 13-9 overall and 0-4 in the WIAC, will play in the UW-Eau Claire Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Falcons play Hamline at 2 p.m. and St. Scholastica at 4 p.m. on Friday at the Gelein Field. Saturday the Falcons play Northland at noon and Viterbo at 2 p.m. at the Hobbs Field.

Falcons Split With SMU

The Falcon softball team split a doubleheader with St. Mary's in games played Monday afternoon at Ramer Field.

The Falcons took the first game, 3-0, and SMU won the nightcap, 1-0.

The big blow in the first game was a two-run homer in the sixth by Emily Evans. It was her first homer of the year. The teams battled with no runs through five innings. UWRF got all of its runs in the sixth. Melissa Turbak opened the sixth reaching first on an error. Jassmy Schwartz then laid down a sacrifice bunt and was safe on the play. Turbak advanced to third and Schwartz to second on an error on the play. Emily Rodgers then singled to left to score Turbak, but Schwartz was thrown out at the plate on the play. Evans then hit the homer to left field. The Falcons scored three runs on six hits and made no errors. SMU had six hits but made three errors. Rodgers finished 2-2 with a run scored and one RBI. Leah Vanderploeg was 2-2. Vanderploeg picked up the win on the mound and improved her record to 6-0. She walked four and struck out one.

In the second game SMU scored one run on 10 hits and made no errors. UWRF had seven runs and one error. SMU scored the game's only run in the third. Anna Poulter was 2-3. Schwartz, Rodgers, Evans, Michelle Heuser and Carolyn Guisinger also had hits. Devanie Bigalk took the loss on the mound and is now 6-6 this year. She worked five and one-third innings and allowed seventh hits and the one earned run. She struck out one and didn't walk a batter. Vanderploeg finished and allowed three hits.

The Falcons, now 13-7 overall and 0-2 in the WIAC, will next host UW-Stout in a WIAC doubleheader at Ramer Field on Thursday. Action starts at 3 p.m.

Falcons Drop Two WIAC Games at UWEC

The Falcon softball team lost both games of a WIAC doubleheader at UW-Eau Claire Wednesday afternoon.

UWEC won the first game, 8-5, and the second, 9-1. The games were the first WIAC contests for both teams. The loss in the first game snapped a Falcon four game winning streak.

In the first game the Falcons scored five runs on seven hits and they made three errors. UWEC scored eight runs on 11 hits and they made two errors. UWRF scored single runs in the first, second and third innings and two in the fifth. UWEC scored once in the first, two runs in the fourth and fifth and won the game with three runs in the sixth. Anna Poulter led the Falcons going 2-4 with three runs scored. She stole one base. Jassamy Schwartz was 1-3 with two RBIs and Leah Vanderploeg was 1-3 with a run scored. Vanderploeg started on the mound for the Falcons and worked five innings. She allowed nine hits and five runs, three were earned. She walked three and struck out three. Devanie Bigalk pitched one inning and took the loss. She allowed two hits and three runs. Two runs were earned. She struck out one. UWEC's Emilee Planert hit a two-run homer in the seventh to help the Bluolds to the win.

In the second game the Falcons managed just one run on three hits and they made two errors. Eau Claire scored nine runs on 13 hits and made one error. UWRF scored its run in the second. UWEC scored three in the first, one in the fourth and ended the game with a five run fifth. The game ended after five innings due to the eight run rule. Emily Rodgers was 1-2 with a run scored and Bigalk had one RBI. Emily Evans and Carolyn Guisinger also had hits for UWRF. Bigalk started on the mound and took the loss. She worked four innings and allowed 10 hits. She allowed seven runs, five were earned. She walked one and struck out one. Vanderploeg worked the final two-thirds of an inning and three hits and two unearned runs. She walked one. Planert hit a two run homer in the first.

Poulter stole three bases in three attempts and now has 32 this year. She now has the WIAC career stolen base record with 100. She broke UWRF's Kristy Dudek's record of 97. Dudek played for the Falcons from 1992-95.

Falcons Finish 4-0 at Augsburg Tourney

The Falcon fastpitch team won two more games on Sunday and finished with a 4-0 record at the Augsburg Tourney.

Sunday the Falcons opened with a 9-1 win over UM-Morris and came back with an 8-0 win over Augsburg.

The Falcons scored nine runs on 12 hits and made no errors in the win over UMM. UMM had one run on seven hits and they made four errors. UWRF scored two runs in the first, single runs in the third, fourth and sixth and four times in the fifth. UMM scored its run in the fourth. Emily Rodgers was 3-3 with a run scored and three RBIs. Anna Poulter was 3-4 with two runs scored and she stole two bases. Jassamy Schwartz was 2-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Melissa Turbak was 1-3 and the hit was a triple. Molly Arends picked up her first collegiate win on the mound. She worked five innings and allowed one earned run. She allowed six hits, walked three and struck out three. Arends is now 1-1. Leah Vanderploeg worked the final inning and allowed one hit. She walked one and struck out two.

Against AC the Falcons scored eight runs on nine hits and made no errors. AC had five hits and made two errors. UWRF scored four runs in the second and single runs in the first, third, fifth and seventh. Eight Falcons had hits led by Emily Evans who finished 2-3 with one RBI. Both of her hits were doubles. Schwartz, who finished 1-2, had two RBIs. Devanie Bigalk picked up the win on the mound and improved her record to 5-3. She went the distance and allowed just five hits. She walked only one and had 10 strike outs.

The Falcons, now 12-4 overall, open WIAC play on Tuesday with a double header at UW-Eau Claire. The first pitch is thrown at 4 p.m.

Falcons Win Twice at Augsburg Tourney

The Falcon fastpitch team beat Augsburg, 2-0, and UM-Morris, 6-2, Saturday afternoon at the Augsburg Tourney.

The Falcons opened against Augsburg and scored two runs on only three hits and they made one error. AC was held scoreless and they had three hits and one error. UWRF scored both of its runs in the fourth. With one out, Jassamy Schwartz walked and stole second. Emily Rodgers was hit by a pitch. Leah Vanderploeg and Schwartz scored on a throwing error by the pitcher. Rodgers advanced to third on the play. Heuser then scored Rodgers on an infield play. Anna Poulter, Schwartz and Heuser had the Falcon hits in the game. Leah Vanderploeg went the distance on the mound to get the win and raise her record to 5-0. She walked only one and struck out eight.

The Falcon bats were a lot more active in the second game. UWRF scored six runs on 13 hits and they made one error. UMM scored two runs on six hits and they made three errors. The Falcons scored four times in the third and single runs in the fourth and seventh. UMM scored both of its runs in the fourth. Poulter finished 3-5 with two runs scored and five stolen bases. Melissa Turbak was 3-4 with one RBI and a run scored. Devanie Bigalk was 1-3 with two RBIs. Breamber Syverson was 3-4 with a run scored. Heuser finished 1-4 with a RBI. Bigalk picked up the win on the mound to improve her record to 5-3. She went the distance and allowed the two earned runs. She walked only one and struck out nine.

The Falcons, now 10-4 overall, will at the Augsburg Dome Tourney again on Sunday. The Falcons play UM-Morris at 11 a.m. and Augsburg at 1 p.m.

Falcons Finish Florida Trip With Split

The Falcon fastpitch team finished their Florida spring trip with a split on Friday.

The Falcons opened with a 2-1 win over Mt. Vernon, but then lost a close 8-7 game to Marian.

In the win over MV the Falcons scored two runs on four hits while MV scored one run on three hits. Both teams made five errors. MV scored its run in the fourth and the Falcons scored single runs in the sixth and seventh. Jassamy Schwartz was 1-4 with a run scored. Melissa Turbak was 1-4 with one RBI. Carolyn Guisinger scored the other Falcon run. Emily Rodgers and Michelle Heuser also had hits. Devanie Bigalk picked up the pitching win working six and one-third innings. She allowed three hits and one unearned run. She walked none and struck out three. Molly Arends worked the final two-thirds of an inning to pick up the save. She retired both batters she faced. She entered the game with runners on first and second and no outs.

Against Marian the Falcons scored seven runs on 10 hits and played errorless ball. MC scored eight runs on 12 hits and they made two errors. UWRF scored three runs in the first and two in the third and seventh. The Falcons had runners on second and third when the game ended. MC scored three in the sixth, twice in the first and seventh and one in the second. Anna Poulter was 3-4 with three runs scored. Rodgers was 2-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Schwartz was 1-3 with two runs and one RBI. Heuser finished 2-4. Arends took the loss on the mound in relief. She worked oen and one-third innings and allowed two earned runs. She walked three and struck out one. Leah Vanderploeg worked five and two-thirds innings and allowed 11 hits. She allowed six runs, four were earned. She didn't walk a batter and struck out four.

The Falcons, now 8-4 overall, will at the Augsburg Dome Tourney on Saturday. The Falcons play Augsburg at 11 a.m. and UM-Morris at 1 p.m.

Falcons Split on Thursday

March 18, 2004

The Falcon fastpitch team split in two games played in Florida on Thursday.

UWRF opened with a 2-1 win over Macalester, but then lost a 4-2 decision to Otterbein.

Falcon pitcher Leah Vanderploeg picked up her fourth win of the season in the win over Macalester. She pitched the full seven innings and allowed just four hits and one earned run. She walked four and struck out six. The Falcons scored two runs on five hits and they made one error. MC also had one error. After MC took a 1-0 lead in the second, the Falcons scored both of their runs in the third. Jassamy Schwartz hit a two-run inside-the-park homer. With one out Anna Poluter singled and stole second. After another Falcon out Schwartz delivered the game-winning hit. Michelle Heuser was 2-3 and Emily Rodgers was 1-3.

Otterbein scored four runs on 10 hits and made three errors. UWRF had two runs on eight hits but made four errors. OC scored a single run in the fifth and three in the sixth while the Falcons got both of their runs in the seventh. Poulter finished 2-4 with a run scored. Emily Stahl was 1-3 with two RBIs. Devanie Bigalk took the loss on the mound for UWRF. She pitched six innings and allowed four runs, but none were earned. She allowed nine hits, walked one and struck out six. Molly Arends worked the final inning and allowed one hit.

The Falcons, now 7-3 overall, will play Mount Vernon at 10:40 a.m. and Marian at 2:20 p.m. on Friday.

Falcons Win Twice in Florida

The Falcon fastpitch team won two games in Florida on Monday to improve their record to 6-2.

The Falcons opened with an 11-3 win over Augsburg and came back later with a 4-0 win over Fairleigh-Dickinson.

Against Augsburg the Falcons scored 11 runs on 12 hits and they made one error. AC scored three runs on four hits and also made one error. The Falcons had two big innings - the third when they scored five times and the fifth when they added four runs. Melissa Turbak was 3-3 at the plate with four RBIs and a run scored. Carolyn Guisinger was 2-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Emily Evans was 2-2 with two RBIs and Jassamy Schwartz was 2-2 with one RBI and two runs. Devanie Bigalk picked up the pitching win to improve her record to 3-2. She pitched five innings and allwed two earned runs. She walked three and struck out six.

In the win over Fairleigh-Dickinson the Falcons scored four runs on nine hits and made no errors. F-D had five hits and played errorless ball. Leah Vanderploeg pitched her second straight shutout. She shutout Westminster, 4-0, on Sunday. She is now 3-0 on the year. She allowed the five hits, walked two and struck out 10. She has struck out 21 batters in the two Florida games she's pitched. Anna Poulter was 2-3 with a run scored. Erin Wood was 1-2 with two RBIs and a run scored. Emily Rodgers, Emily Stahl, Breamber Syverson, Michelle Heuser, Carolyn Guisinger and Turbak all had one hit. Rodgers, Wood and Syverson also scored.

The Falcons will play Denison at 4:10 and Springfield at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

Falcons Open With Split in Florida

March 14, 2004

The Falcon fastpitch team split in their first two games in Florida on Sunday.

The Falcons lost to Rowan, 11-5, but came back to beat Westminister, 4-0.

Rowan had 11 hits on 13 hits and no errors while UWRF scored five runs on 12 hits and they made three errors. UWRF built a 3-0 lead after three innings, but Rowan scored six times in the fourth to break the game open. Anna Poulter led the Falcons at the plate going 3-4 with three runs scored. Jassamy Schwartz was 2-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Emily Rodgers was 2-4 with two runs scored. Devanie Bigalk took the loss on the mound and is now 2-2 this year. She worked three and one-third innings and allowed six earned runs. She allowed six hits, walked one and struck out one. Molly Arends worked the final three and two-thirds innings and five runs, three were earned. She allowed five hits and walked five.

Pitcher Leah Vanderploeg allowed just three hits and struck out 11 in helping the Falcons get the 4-0 win over Westminister. She went the distance and picked up the team's second shutout of the young season. She walked only one. The Falcons scored four runs on four hits and they made two errors. Westminister had just the three hits and they made three errors. Rodgers finished 2-4 with a run scored. Emily Evans was 1-3 with one RBI. Poulter was 1-4 with a run scored. Breamber Syverson and Melissa Turbak also scored for the Falcons.

The Falcons, now 4-2 overall, will play Augsburg at 8:50 a.m. and Fairleigh-Dickinson at 12:30 p.m. on Monday.

Falcons Win Twice at Finlandia Tourney

The Falcon fastpitch team won two more games at the Finlandia Dome Tourney on Sunday.

The Falcons opened with a 9-1 win over Concordia and then beat the host school, 9-0.

In the win over Concordia the Falcons scored nine runs on 10 hits and they made one error. Concordia scored one run on one hit and they made one error. The Falcons scored six times in the first, one in the second and two in the sixth. Concordia scored its run in the first. Jassamy Schwartz went 4-4 at the plate with three RBIs. She double home two runs in the first. Emily Rodgers was 3-4. Devanie Bigalk started on the mound and worked the first two innings to get the win. Molly Arends pitched the final four innings in her first collegiate action.

In the win over Finlandia the Falcons scored nine runs on 11 hits and made one error. Finlandia was held scoreless and they had two hits and made three errors. UWRF scored a single run in the second and four runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Anna Poulter was 3-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases. Carolyn Guisinger was 3-3 with three runs scored. Bre Syverson was 2-2. Leah Vanderploeg picked up the win on the mound. She went the distance and struck out nine.

The Falcons, now 3-1 overall, will next travel to Florida to play in the Rebel Spring Games from March 14-19. On March 14 the Falcons play Rowan at 12:30 p.m. and Westminister at 4:10 p.m.

Falcons Split at Finlandia Tourney

March 6, 2004

The Falcon fastpitch team split in two games at the Finlandia Dome Tourney played Saturday in Hancock, Mich.

The Falcons opened with a 5-0 win over Alverno, but then lost a 7-3 decision to UM-Duluth.

The Falcons scored five runs on seven hits and made one error against Alverno. AC had no runs on just one hit and they made two errors. The Falcons scored two runs in the first and second innings and a single run in the sixth. Devanie Bigalk started for the Falcons on the mound and worked the first three innings and did not allow a hit. Leah Vanderploeg worked the final four innings to get the win. She allowed just the one hit. Emily Rodgers was 2-4 at the plate with two RBIs. In the second the Falcons had runners on second and third and Rodgers singled them both home.

Against UMD, the Falcons scored three runs on four hits and made two errors. UMD scored seven runs on seven hits and made three errors. The Falcons scored one run in the first and two in the fifth while UMD scored four runs in the second and single runs in the first, fifth and sixth. Bigalk picked up the loss on the mound working six innings. Vanderploeg worked the final inning. Anna Poulter scored two runs for the Falcons reaching base with a single and on an error. Rodgers made two outstanding catches in center field to keep the Falcons in the game.

Sunday the Falcons play two more games at the Tourney. They face Concordia at 8 a.m. and Finlandia at 11 a.m.
