Six members of the Falcon mens hockey team have been named to 2004
All-NCHA teams. Nine players were also named to the 2004 All-WIAC team.
In the NCHA, three Falcons , defenseman Marc-Andre Lalande (Jr., Deux-Montagnes,
Que.) and forwards Jess Johnson (Sr., Bloomington, Minn.) and
Jim Murphy (Sr., St. Paul, Minn) were all named to the first team.
Goalie Andy Scanlon (So., Apple Valley, Minn.) and forwards Jamie
Steinert (Sr., Bloomington, Minn.) and Matt Elsen (Sr., Richfield,
Minn.) all earned honorable mention.
Lalande was one of four players named to the first team on defense. He
finished the season with two goals and five assists in 24 games. He played
well in both ends of the rink and was a reliable player with and without
the puck. Johnson finished third for the Falcons in scoring. He scored
nine goals and added 15 assists for 24 points in 27 games. He scored two
power-play goals. Johnson earned NCHA honorable mention honors in 2001
and 2002. Murphy, who earned honorable mention honors to the 2003 team,
led the Falcons in scoring. He led the Falcons with 13 goals and led the
team with 17 assists for 30 points in 27 contests. He scored two power-play
goals.
Scanlon was a first-year player for the Falcons. He had an 11-2-3 record
with a 1.77 goals against average, a .935 saves percentage and three shutouts.
He led the Falcons in all four categories. Steinert scored 10 goals and
had nine assists for 19 points in 27 games. He had three power-play goals
and tied for the team lead with two short-handed goals. Elsen was second
in scoring with 10 goals and 15 assists for 25 points. He scored three
power-play goals.
Johnson, Lalande and Steinert were all named to the first All-WIAC team.
Also named to the first team was defenseman Murphy Dwyer (So., Burnsville,
Minn.) Dwyer had one goal and six assists for seven points in 26 games.
Elsen, Steve Moe Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) , Murphy and Scanlon
all earned honorable mention to the team. Moe scored scored eight goals
and had six assists. He scored one short-handed goal.
The Falcons were 19-4-4 overall, 8-3-3 in the NCHA and 4-2-2 in the WIAC.
UWRF placed second in the NCHA and tied with UW-Superior for the WIAC
title.
Falcon Coach Steve Freeman and Eau Claire Coach Jean Laforest were named
Co-Coaches of the Year in the WIAC. It is the second straight year that
Freeman has been named the WIAC Coach of the Year. He also won the award
in 2003 and in 1998.
