Falcon Men's Basketball Player of the Week

Feb. 23, 2004

Guard Micah Helfrey (Sr., Mesa, Ariz.) played a key role in two Falcon wins last week which helped UWRF to its first WIAC men's basketball championship since 1950. The Falcons beat UW-Stout, 64-61 in overtime, and UW-Platteville, 50-47 at the Karges Center. He had 13 points, four rebounds, five assists and a steal in the team's win over Platteville in the game that sealed the WIAC title. In the two games he was 7-16 from the field and 7-12 from the line for 21 points. He had 11 rebounds, 10 assists and one steal in 83 minutes of action. He played every minute in the overtime win over Stout. "Micah's statistics weren't that good for the games, but we absolutely could not have won the WIAC title without him on the floor," Falcon Coach Rick Bowen said.

Feb. 16, 2004

Forward Rich Melzer (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. River Falls HS) helped the Falcons to two WIAC wins last week and in the process became the second leading all-time scorer in UWRF basketball history. The Falcons won in overtime, 79-76, at UW-Superior on Wednesday and earned a 72-70 win over first place UW-Whitewater on Saturday. UWRF is now in a tie for first place with UWW and UW-Stevens Point for first place in the WIAC standings. He scored 32 points at UWS and 36 at UWW to lead all scorers in both games. He now has scored 2,271 career points. He overcame Dean Cook (2,261) points in the game at UWW. He trails only Nate DeLong, who scored 2,592 points. He finished 23-43 (.534) from the field, including 1-3 from three-point range. He was 21-30 (.700) from the line. He finished with 17 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and five steals in 81 minutes of action. He played every minute (45) in the overtime at UWS.

Feb. 9, 2004

Forward Rich Melzer (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. River Falls HS) helped the Falcons to two more WIAC wins last weekend over nationally-ranked UW-Stevens Point (70-59) and UW-Eau Claire 68-60). He led all teams in scoring and rebounding in the two games. He scored 27 points and had 10 rebounds against Eau Claire and 25 points and eight rebounds against Stevens Point. He finished 24-39 (.615) from the field and 4-7 (.571) from the line. He finished with 18 rebounds, 52 points, seven assists, three blocks and four steals. He committed only three turnovers and played all but five minutes in the two contests.

Feb. 2, 2004

Forward Rich Melzer (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. River Falls HS) played a key role for the Falcons in the team's 75-58 win at home over UW-La Crosse. Melzer led all scorers with 32 points and all rebounders with eight. He finished 13-21 (.619) from the field and a perfect 6-6 from the line. He had three assists, one block and only one turnover in 32 minutes of action.

Jan. 26, 2004

Forward Rich Melzer (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. River Falls HS) played a key role as the Falcons won two of three games. Melzer led the Falcons in scoring and rebounding in each game. He finished with 96 points and 21 rebounds. He was 34-58 (.586) from the field and 28-32 (.875) from the line. He had six assists, only five turnovers, two blocks and six steals in 98 minutes of playing time.

Jan. 19, 2004

Forward Rich Melzer (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. River Falls HS) scored his 2,000th career point for the Falcons last week. The Falcons split two WIAC games, beating UW-Superior, 69-53 at home, but losing at UW-Platteville, 57-56. Melzer reached the milestone against Superior, in a game that he scored 29 points. After both games he now has 2,023 points, third on the all-time Falcon list. In the two games he finished 18-36 from the field, including 1-1 from three-point range. He was 14-22 from the line. He finished with 51 points, 20 rebounds, three assists, seven blocks and three steals in 74 minutes of playing time.



Jan. 12, 2004

Forward Rich Melzer (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. River Falls HS) helped the Falcons to a 73-56 win over UW-Eau Claire putting UWRF just a half game out of first place in the WIAC standings. Melzer finished with 33 points on 12-22 shooting from the field and a perfect 9-9 shooting from the line. He had five rebounds, three assists and a steal in 34 minutes of playing time.



Jan. 5, 2004

Guard Micah Helfrey (Sr., Mesa, Ariz.) helped the Falcons to three wins last week, including an important WIAC win over previously undefeated Whitewater, 81-72. In the three games he scored 39 points nad had 12 assists. He finished 15-34 from the field, including 3-12 from three-point range. He was 6-9 from the line. He had 11 steals in 98 minutes of action. Against Whitewater he was second in scoring for the Falcons with 17 points. He was 7-10 from the field and 2-2 from behind the arc. He had two assists and three steals in the game.

Dec. 8, 2003

Guard Micah Helfrey (Sr., Mesa, Ariz.) was one of the top players on the floor in the team's two WIAC games last week. In the two contests he finished 9-13 (.692) from the field, including 3-5 (.600) from three-point range. He finished with four rebounds, 21 points, four assists and five steals in 69 minutes of playing time.

Dec. 1, 2003

Forward Rich Melzer (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn., River Falls HS) had two excellent performances for the Falcons last weekend. The Falcons won at Macalester 80-77, and lost at St. Cloud, 72-69. Melzer led the Falcons in scoring and rebounding in both games. He scored 55 points and had 16 rebounds. He was 27-46 (.586) from the field and 11-17 (.647) from the line. He had three assists in 71 minutes of action.

Nov. 24, 2003

Guard Chris Becker (Sr., Stone Lake, Wis. Hayward HS) helped the Falcons to a 1-1 record at the Puget Sound Classic held last weekend. The Falcons beat Pacific Lutheran, 74-63, but lost a 104-102 decision to Puget Sound. In the two games he was 9-24 from the floor, including 5-14 from three-point range. He was 5-6 from the line. He scored 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. He had six assists, one blocked shot and seven steals in 65 minutes of action. He was named to the All-Tournament team.
