Meet the Falcons

Lisa Bartsch
G, 5-10, Senior, #24

Lisa Bartsch returned to the Falcons last year and had a solid season. She played in 24 games and averaged almost 17 minutes a game. She averaged 4.0 points and 3.1 rebounds a game. She led the team with eight blocked shots. She did not play ball during the 2000-2001 season when she spent a semester at the University of Northern Colorado and a semester studying abroad in Belize. She also spent a summer teaching English in Japan. She was named the team’s Player of the Week on Feb. 11. She scored a season high 14 points against Viterbo and grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds against La Crosse. She blocked three shots in a game against Superior. She shot well in the team’s last four games going 9-16. She has the talent to drive to the basket and help the team with her rebounding skills. She is the daughter of Dave and Lynn Bartsch and is majoring in health & human performance. She has a Spanish minor.

Nicole Harberts
G, 5-10, Senior, #33

Nicole Harberts will be one of the team’s leaders this year in her final season with the Falcons. She started every game for the Falcons last year and averaged 7.2 points and 5.0 rebounds a game. She showed great determination after a knee injury in the 2000-01 season opener limited her to just 13 games. Harberts is a solid rebounder and she has the talents to hit the 15-foot jumper. Her defensive skills have steadily improved during her career. Three times last year she scored 15 points in a game – vs. Redlands, Viterbo and Whitewater. Her top rebounding game was against Superior when she had 12. She shot very well in the team’s last eight games when she was 27-54. She was named the team’s Player of the Week on Dec. 3. She won the team’s best assists to turnover ratio award averaging 1.57 assists and 1.46 turnovers a game. She is the daughter of Paul and Lynette Harberts and is majoring in biology/pre-medicine. She has double minors in French and chemistry. Harberts is a member of the Falcon softball team.

Concetta Smith

Concetta Smith saw a lot of action for the Falcons at the end of the 2001-2002 season and the Falcons are looking forward to her taking off from there this year. She played in 21 games and averaged one point and 1.3 rebounds while averaging about seven minutes of action a game. She scored four points in each of two of the team’s last three games. She grabbed a season high five rebounds in a game at Stevens Point. She played in 13 of the team’s final 14 games and averaged 13 minutes of action in the last five games. Her strengths are primarily on the defensive end of the floor but her rebounding skills and determination have also improved after two years of collegiate ball. She is the daughter of Gerry and Kathy Smith. She has a double major in health & human performance and Spanish. Smith is also on the UWRF rodeo team.

Bri Biebighauser

Brianna Biebighauser is in her first year with the Falcons after playing the 2000-01 season at Moorhead State, Minn. She played in all 27 games for the Dragons and averaged 3.1 points and 1.6 rebounds a game. At Pequot Lakes, Minn., High School she helped the Patriots to two undefeated regular seasons in 1999 and 2000. The 2000 team finished fourth in the Class 2A state tournament. She started for four years and helped the team to four regional titles. Biebighauser was named to the all-conference team three times and is the school’s all-time scoring and assist leader. She averaged 19 points, six assists and four rebounds a game as a senior. She was named to the All-State team. She is the daughter of Ron and Linda. She is majoring in marketing communications.


Christi Crews

Christi Crews had a great season of learning about the collegiate game during her first year with the Falcons in 2001-2002. One of the tallest players with the Falcons, she will help in defending in the post and rebounding. She played in 10 games for the Falcons last year and averaged nearly four minutes a game. She averaged 1.2 points and 1.0 rebounds a game. She scored a season high six points against Stevens Point and had a high of four rebounds against Platteville. With several inside players graduated, Crews will be looked upon to fill a role for the 2002-2003 Falcons. She is the daughter of Ray and Sue Crews and is majoring in sociology.

Erin Effle

rin Effle played a major role for the Falcons in her first year during the 2001-2002 season. She started 25 games as a freshman last year and averaged 25.4 minutes of action. She led the team in scoring and rebounding with 11.3 points and 6.8 rebounds a game. She was given honorable mention to the All-WIAC team – one of only three freshmen to earn the honor. She was named the team’s Top Rebounder and was the team’s Player of the Week on Feb. 4. She led the team in field goal shooting, .498. She even stepped outside and hit 6-14 three-pointers. She led the Falcons with 39 steals and was second with six blocked shots. She scored 20 or more points four times last year. Her best effort was a 23-point performance against Superior. Effle had four double-doubles and had a season high 13 rebounds against Northwestern. In one nine-game stretch she averaged 14.3 points a game. With team’s looking to stop her this year, Effle will have to use her skills, quickness and strength to continue improving in the WIAC. She is the daughter of Jim and Kathy Effle. She is majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry.

Darcy Olsen

Darcy Olsen stepped into the Falcon lineup last year and had an immediate impact with the 2001-02 team. She played and started in 25 games at point guard. She finished third in scoring averaging 8.5 points a game. She led the Falcons in assists (65) and was second in steals (35) while leading the team in minutes played a game (33.5). Olsen was second in field goal shooting (76-173, .439) and led the team in three-pointers (34). She was second in three-point field goal percentage (34 –83, .410). Olsen had a season high 22 points against La Crosse last year and dished out eight assists against Platteville. In one five-game stretch last year she averaged 12.6 points a game. Her play grew stronger throughout the season and she will be looked upon as a leader this year. She earned All-State Honorable Mention honors at Eastview, Minn., High School as a senior. She is the daughter of Jeff and Claire Olsen. She is majoring in health & human performance.

Lindsay Rasmussen

Lindsay Rasmussen showed great improvement in her game in 2001-02 with her play at both the wing and post positions. She showed the ability and talents to learn the game and worked hard to make herself a better player. She played in 14 games and averaged nearly one point and one rebound a contest. She was nearly perfect from the line going 8-9. She scored four points in four games (Platteville, Eau Claire, Silver Lake) and had a season-high three rebounds against Platteville. In her senior season at Baldwin-Woodville High School she was named to the all-conference team. She is the daughter of Dave and Sheryl Rasmussen. She is majoring in elementary education with a minor in math.

Amber Sickels

Amber Sickels made the adjustment to the college game look easy in 2001-02. She played a key role at the wing position in every game for the Falcons. Her team-first attitude and love of the game certainly shined through in her first season at UWRF. She averaged 5.7 points and 3.4 rebounds. She is a strong defensive player and showed great determination in rebounding while averaging 21.6 minutes of playing time per game. She finished the year with 27 steals and 26 assists. She scored a season-high 14 points against St. Scholastica and grabbed a season-high nine rebounds against Oshkosh. Sickels will pick up where she left off and become a better player for the Falcons in 2002-03. At Albert Lea, Minn., High School she was named to the All-Conference team in her final two years of competition. She is the daughter of Donnie and Nancy Sickels. She is majoring in elementary education with double minors in coaching and early childhood education.

Gina Astedt

Gina Astedt joins the Falcons after a solid career at Blaine, Minn., High School where she averaged 7.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.5 steals in 2002. The Bengals were the state runners up in 2002 and placed third in 2000. They finished second in the 2001 sectional. Astedt was named to the all-conference team in 2002 and led her team in steals in the 2001 season. She was named to the academic all-state team and earned two academic letters. She was a member of the National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Charlie and Anna. She is majoring in business.

 

Miranda Biteler
G, 5-8, Freshman, #12
Chanhassen, Minn.
Chanhassen High School


Miranda Biteler is a talented player who will see playing time for the 2002-03 Falcons. She won three letters and was a two-year starter at Chaska, Minn., High School. With Biteler’s help the Hawks finished runner up in the Section 4A playoffs after being seeded fourth. She was given honorable mention to the all-conference team after averaging 9.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 4.6 assists a game in 2002. Biteler had a career-high 22 points during the season. She was captain of the team in 2002 and won her school’s Triple A (Arts, Academics & Athletics) Award. She is the daughter of LeRoy and Wanda. She is majoring in health & human performance with minors in business and coaching.

 

Jill Crandal
P, 5-11, Freshman, #45
Roseville, Minn.
Roseville High School


Jill Crandall will bring the Falcons some height and quickness near the basket in the 2002-03 season. She was given honorable mention to the all-conference team last year at Roseville, Minn., High School. She earned three letters and helped the Raiders to the 2000 Region championship when the team finished undefeated in conference play. The 2001 and 2002 teams finished second in regional play. Crandall was a member of the A honor roll. She is the daughter of Eugene and Deb. She is majoring in elementary education.

 

Jamie Krueger
G, 5-8, Freshman, #22
Fall Creek, Wis.
Fall Creek High School


Jamie Krueger is a first year player for the Falcons who played at Fall Creek High School last year. She was a three-year starter for the Crickets and averaged 8.3 points, 2.5 rebounds, two steals and 1.5 assists a game last year. She was named to the all-conference and the All-Northwest teams last year. Krueger was chosen to play with the WBCA D3 North All-Star team and was a WBCA Academic All-State team member. She was named a conference Scholar-Athlete, earned the Excellence in Education award and was valedictorian of her class. She started for the Crickets the past three years and the team won the conference title in 2000, regional titles in 2001 and 2002 and were sectional runner ups in 2001. She is the daughter of Dick and Michelle. She is majoring in political science and hopes to go to law school eventually.


Chantele Melgaard
G, 5-9, Freshman, #31
Lakeville, Minn.
Lakeville High School


Chantele Melgaard is a first year player who will be looked upon to help the Falcons immediately. She helped lead Lakeville, Minn., High School to the 2001 and 2002 State Class 4A Championships. Last year the team finished 28-0 and Melgaard averaged 10 points, two rebounds, three steals and one assist a game. The Panthers won its conference and sectional championships for three straight years. Melgaard was named to the all-conference team in 2002 and played in the Minnesota All-Star game. She earned four letters and was a starter in 2002. She is the daughter of Chip and Dawn Melgaard. She is majoring in pre-medicine.


Chisato Nakaike
G, 5-9, Freshman, #14
Fukui, Japan
Fukui High School


Chisato Nakaike is in her first year with the Falcons after competing in basketball at her high school in Japan. She came to River Falls for the English program so she could earn her college degree in America. She was a Best 16 player in Fukui inter-school championships and was a Best 5 at a national athletic meet. She is the daughter of Yukio and Satomi. She is undecided on a major field of study.


Emily Rodgers
F, 5-6, Freshman, #25
Richfield, Minn.
Richfield High School


Emily Rodgers was a red shirt player in the 2002 season for the Falcons. She will help the Falcons with her play at a forward spot. She is a solid defensive player. A great all-around athlete, Rodgers is a starter for the Falcon soccer team and also a member of the fastpitch squad. She is majoring in health & human performance.


Kendra Sticha
P, 6-0, Freshman, #34
New Prague, Minn.
New Prague High School


Kendra Sticha comes to the Falcons as a strong post player who will help the Falcons with her inside game. She was a two-year starter at New Prague, Minn., High School and averagted 10 points, 10 rebounds and four assists a game in 2002. Her team won the 2000 Minnesota State Championship and finished as runner up in the 2002 sectional tourney. Sticha was the team’s captain in 2002 and was named to the all-conference team. She is an outstanding student in the classroom graduating with high honors and also was a member of the National Honor Society. Her sister, Lynn, played for the Falcons from 1995-1998. She is the daughter of Ken and Marge. She is majoring in marketing with a minor in Spanish.
