Hovet Named WIAC Coach of the Year
Long, McKernon, Reif-Wenner Named All-WIAC

Forwards Andrea Long (Jr., Menomonie, Wis.), Melissa McKernon (Jr., Owatonna, Minn.) and guard Mara Reif-Wenner (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn.) have all been named to the first All-WIAC women's basketball team. Cindy Hovet was named the WIAC Coach of the Year. Hovet helped the Falcons finished 18-8 overall and 11-5 and in a tie for third place in the WIAC. The Falcons won a first-round WIAC playoff game, but were eliminated in the semifinals. The 18 wins is the most by a Falcon team since the 1988-89 season when UWRF finished 23-5. Long was named to the first team in 2000. This year she led the WIAC in scoring averaging 16.6 points a game. She started all 26 games and also led the team in rebounding (6.8). She was 140-278 from the field (.504) and 152-199 (.764) from the line. She had 20 assists, 14 blocked shots and 21 steals while averaging 29.5 minutes a game. In the WIAC she finished fourth in rebounding, fifth in field goal percentage, sixth in free throw percentage and 11th in blocked shots. McKernon finished second in scoring for the Falcons averaging 12.5 points a game. She was second in rebounding (6.2). She was 114-288 from the field (.396) including 37-101 (.366) from three-point range. She was 61-88 (.693) from the line. She had 62 assists, five blocks and 27 steals while averaging 29.4 minutes a game. McKernon was seventh in the WIAC in rebounding and three-pointers made. She was 11th in field goal percentage, 12th in free throw percentage and 13th in scoring. Reif-Wenner, one of the team's captains, was third on the team in scoring averaging 10.6 points a game. She was also third in rebounding (6.1). She was 107-223 (.48) from the field including 16-41 from three-point range. She was 46-69 (.667) from the line. She had 97 assists, second on the team, one block and a team-high 54 steals. She averaged 32.1 minutes a game. Reif-Wenner ranked second in the WIAC in assist/turnover ratio, fourth in asssists, sixth in steals, seventh in field goal percentage and eighth in rebounding. Reif-Wenner was also named to the five-team WAIC All-Defensive team. |
