Falcon Men's Basketball Player of the Week

Feb. 24, 2003

Rich Melzer (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn. River Falls HS) helped the Falcons to two WIAC wins in overtime last week. The Falcons beat Stout, 92-86 on Wednesday, and Platteville, 78-72, in two overtimes on Saturday. Melzer led the Falcons in scoring and rebounding in both games. He finished with 31 points and 13 rebounds at Platteville and 34 points and 11 rebounds at Stout. In the two games he was 24-44 from the field and 17-24 from the line. He had 24 rebounds, four assists, six blocks and nine steals. He played all but two minutes in the games. His 698 points this year is third all-time at UWRF for points in a season.



Feb. 17, 2003

Rich Melzer (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn. River Falls HS) played a key role in he Falcons 62-56 win over UW-Superior last week. Melzer led all scorers with 29 points. He was 10-22 from the field and 9-12 from the line. He also had 11 rebounds, one assist and one steal. He played the entire game.

 

 

 

 

 

Feb. 10, 2003

Rich Melzer (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn. River Falls HS) had two more strong games for the Falcons last week. In the two WIAC games he was 23-41 from the field and 15-23 from the line for 61 points. He had 21 rebounds, one assist, two blocks and a steal in 76 minutes of action.

 

 

 

 

Feb. 3, 2003

Forward Rich Melzer (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn. River Falls High School) had a career best week for the Falcons. UWRF won at UW-La Crosse, 81-65, and lost at home to UW-Whitewater, 71-63 on Saturday. At La Crosse on Wednesday, Melzer finished with a career high 54 points. He was 20-27 from the field and 14-16 from the line. He also had 16 rebounds, four assists, four blocked shots and a steal in the contest. The 54 points ties Melzer for fourth in Falcon history for points in a game. The 54 points is the most by any NCAA Div. I, II or III male basketball player this year. The 16 rebounds is a season high. In the two games he finished with 81 points and 21 rebounds. He was 30-44 (.681) from the field and 21-26 (.807) from the line. He had eight assists, seven blocked shots, three steals and five turnovers in 74 minutes of action.

 

Jan. 20, 2003

Matt Kukla (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) helped the Falcons to two WIAC wins last week. In the two games he was 14-23 from the field, including 13-19 from three-point range. He was 2-2 from the line for 52 points. He had eight rebounds, six assists, one blocked shot and one steal in 59 minutes of playing time

Jan. 13, 2003

Matt Kukla (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) helped the Falcons to two wins last week. He had a great shooting week, especially from behind the three-point line. In the team's win over Marian, he was 8-14 from three-point range and scored a career-high 35 points. The eight three-pointers ties a UWRF single game school record. For the two games he was 15-25 from the field, including 10-17 from three-point range. He was 7-9 from the line. He had six rebounds, 47 points, six assists and one steal in 55 minutes of action.

 

Jan. 6, 2003

Rich Melzer (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn. River Falls HS) played key roles for the Falcons in the team's three games last week. In the three games he scored 85 points and grabbed 29 rebounds. He also had five blocked shots and seven assists. At UW-Whitewater on Saturday he led the Falcons with 35 points and seven rebounds. He had 14 rebounds against Wisconsin Lutheran. For the week he finished 33-58 (.568) from the field and 19-25 (.760) from the line. He was named the Cenex Harvest States Tournament Most Valuable Player.

 

 

Dec. 9, 2002

Forward Rich Melzer (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn. River Falls HS) helped the Falcons to one win in two WIAC games last week. In a win at UW-Oshkosh (79-71) he led the Falcons with 34 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. For the two games he was 22-39 (.564) from the field and 15-20 (.750) from the line for 56 points. He had 16 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and one steal in 78 minutes of action.

 

 

 

Dec. 2, 2002

Forward Rich Melzer (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn. River Falls HS) hit the 1,000 point career mark last week while helping the Falcons to two wins in three games. Melzer hit the milestone in the team's game against Embry-Riddle. He scored 355 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in that game. He scored 31 points in a win over Macalester and came back with 28 in a win over Cabrini. For the three games he was 40-68 (.588) from the field and 14-17 (.823) from the line. He scored 94 points, averaging 31.3 a game. He also had 25 rebounds (8.3 a game), seven assists, 11 blocked shots, including six against Cabrini) and five steals. He now has 1,047 career points.

 

Nov. 26, 2002

Forward Rich Melzer (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn. River Falls HS) helped the Falcons to two wins and the Bethel College Tournament championship last weekend. Melzer led the Falcons in scoring in both games finishing with 22 against Northwestern and 26 in the championship game against Bethel. He was 18-31 from the field and 12-19 from the line. He had 11 rebounds in the two games along with four blocks, three assists and one steal.
