Falcon Men's Basketball Player of the Week

Feb. 18, 2002 Edmund Johnson (Sr., Indianola, Iowa) played two fine road games for the Falcons last week. He was 12-17 from the field and 4-5 from the line for 28 points. He had 14 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and three steals in 73 minutes of playing time.
Feb. 11, 2002 Guard Brian Mathison (Jr., Cumberland, Wis.) helped the Falcons to two WIAC wins last week by hitting three-pointers in both games as time ran out to lift UWRF to the wins. At Stout on Wednesday Mathison scored a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Falcons a 70-68 win. Saturday at home against UW-Eau Claire he hit a three with just :03 to play to give UWRF a 66-64 win. In the two games he scored 24 points going 8-16 from the field, including 5-10 from three-point range. He was 3-4 from the line. He had eight rebounds, one assist and two steals in 71 minutes of action.
Feb. 4, 2002 Forward Rich Melzer (So., Minneapolis, Minn. River Falls HS) played two strong games for the Falcons as the team finished 1-1 for the week. In the two games he scored 59 points. He was 22-42 from the field and 15-23 from the line. He had 11 rebounds, six assists and six blocks in 73 minutes of playing time. At Superior he led the Falcons with 39 points, a career high, and five rebounds.
Jan. 28, 2002 Rich Melzer (So., Minneapolis, Minn. River Falls HS) helped lead the Falcons to an 82-75 overtime win over UW-Whitewater Saturday night at the Karges Center. Melzer finished with a game-high 38 points and 19 rebounds. He was 13-24 from the field and 12-16 from the line. He had three blocked shots and one steal in 44 minutes of action.
Jan. 14, 2002 Forward Edmund Johnson (Sr., Indianola, Iowa) helped the Falcons to a 1-1 week in WIAC play last week. In the two games, he scored 34 points and grabbed 18 rebounds. At Eau Claire he led the Falcons with 15 points and 13 rebounds. He was 16-22 from the field and 2-2 from the line. He had three assists, one block and four steals.
Dec. 17, 2001 Forward Rich Melzer (So., Minneapolis, Minn. River Falls HS) helped the Falcons to two wins last week, including a WIAC win over UW-Superior. The Falcons beat Superior, 61-50 and Simpson, 82-74. In the two games he was 19-34 from the field and 1-1 from the line for 39 points. He grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked four shots. At Simpson he scored 26 points going 13-17 from the field.
Dec. 10, 2001 Guard Kent Becker (Sr., Stone Lake, Wis. Hayward HS) helped the Falcons to two wins last week, including a WIAC win at UW-Oshkosh on Saturday. In Tuesdays 84-73 win over Northwestern, he led the team with 20 points. He had four rebounds, three assists and two steals. At Oshkosh he again led the team with 24 points and was 10-11 from the field, including 3-3 from three-point range. He added four rebounds, four assists and two steals. For the two games he was 17-24 from the field, including 5-8 fromthree-point range and 7-10 from the line for 44 points. He had eight rebounds, seven assists, four steals and only three turnovers in 67 minutes of action.
Nov. 26, 2001 Guard Scott DeWyre (Jr., Glenwood City, Wis.) helped the Falcons to two wins last week. He led the team in scoring in the win over St. Thomas. He finished with 22 points going 8-13 from the field including 6-8 from three-point range. In the two games he scored 33 points and was 12-17 from the field including 9-11 from three-point range. He had three rebounds six assists and five steals.
Nov. 19, 2001 Forward Rich Melzer (So., Minneapolis, Minn.) had a strong game as the Falcons started the season with a 97-94 loss at Bethel, Ind. He finished 16-24 from the field and 1-3 from the line for a game-high 33 points. He had seven rebounds, one assist, two blocked shots and one steal in 35 minutes of play. |
