Baseball Team Held Scoreless by the Warriors

May 2, 2000

The Falcon baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Winona St., 11-0 and 7-0, Tuesday afternoon at Ramer Field.

The team couldn't solve the Winona pitching staff all day long, collecting just three hits in the two games. No one on the team collected more than one hit.

In the first game, the Warriors capitalized on eight Falcon errors to score five unearned runs.

Mike Van Eperon's two-run shot in the second and Shea Mueske's three-run bomb in the sixth off Mike Harris were all the runs needed by Winona starter John Spaeth. Spaeth took a perfect game into the through five innings before Brad Stokke broke it up with a leadoff single in the sixth.

In the second game, despite a solid pitching performance from Justin Everson, the Falcons were turned back 7-0. Everson pitched 4 1/3, allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits, but was outduelled by the Winona St. pitching staff.

Josh Loewen pitched six innings of two-hit ball for the win.

The Falcons drop to 15-15 for the season, and will play UW-Platteville Friday at 12:30 p.m at Ramer Field.

Falcons Win Twice at Superior

May 2, 2000

The Falcons won twice at UW-Superior Saturday, 19-5 and 11-7 in 12 innings, on Saturday.

In the first game the Falcons scored 19 runs on 18 hits and made two errors. UWS had five runs on eight hits and had one error. The Falcons exploded for 11 runs in the fourth inning. Scott DeWyre was 3-4 with five RBIs and he hit a home run. Joe Schmidt was 2-4 with four runs scored and two RBIs. He hit two homers. Tim Johnson was 2-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs. He hit a homer. Nathan Brom was 4-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. He also homered. Nick Reimler was 3-6 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Jason Bachman went the distance on the mound. He walked two and struck out two.

In the second game the Falcons scored four times in the 12th to get the win. The Falcons had 14 hits and made five errors while Superior had 11 hits and made four errors. Schmidt was 3-5 with three runs scored and five RBIs. He hit a home run. DeWyre was 5-6 with three runs scored and two RBIs and he hit a homer. Brad Stokke had three RBIs. Dale Le Monds started on the mound and worked seven innings. He allowed nine hits, six runs, five were earned. He walked two and struck out three. Bruce Grandits picked up the win working the final five innings. He allowed just two hits and one unearned run. He didn't walk a batter and struck out three.

The Falcons face Winona State in a doubleheader on Tuesday at Ramer Field. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.

Baseball Splits Pair of One-Run Games Against La Crosse

The Falcons split with the Eagles on Friday, winning the first game, 7-6, in 11 innings and losing the second, 13-12.

In the first game, Joe Schmidt's sacrifice fly scoring Nick Reimler gave the Falcons a 7-6 win. With one out, Reimler was hit by a Steve Bleck pitch and advanced to third on a Tim Johnson single to left field. Schmidt then hit a shallow fly ball to center field. Joe Jansen's throw was off target, and the Falcons won their second conference game of the season.

Josh Eidem pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief to get the win. He gave up one runs, none earned, on five hits.

Eidem came in for Dale LeMonds, who gave the Falcons 7 2/3 of solid pitching; however, the Eagles capitalized on every mistake. Of the five runs LeMonds gave up, four came on homeruns. James DeCremer hit a two-run bomb to give La Crosse a 2-1 lead in the second. Vinnie Rottino hit a homer to right in the sixth, and Tom Tollefson hit one in the eighth.

The Falcons would not go down. Down 4-1, they came back with three runs in the sixth off starter Andy Elkamp. With the bases loaded and one out, Nate Brom was hit by a pitch. With two out, Corey Martinson ground ball was thrown away and Brad Stokke and Scott DeWyre scored.

In the second game, the Falcons blew a seven-run first inning to fall to the Eagles, 13-12.

After scoring three runs in the third, La Crosse added five-run rally in the fourth, all with two outs on starting pitcher Dan Morgan.

Again, the Eagles did it with the long ball. Casey Bablitch hit two home runs off Morgan, and Kevin Blazek added another shot.

Scott DeWyre added a solo shot in the eighth, but it wasn't enough.

The Falcons fought back to take a 11-10 lead, but Bruce Grandits couldn't hold it and took the loss.

Reimler went 4-for-6 to lead the Falcons; Eidem went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

The Falcons are now 13-13, 2-6 in the WIAC. La Crosse is 21-12, 5-3 in conference. The Falcons will remain in conference play Saturday when they face Superior at noon in Superior.

Falcons Lose Twice at Stevens Point

The Falcons lost both ends of a WIAC doubleheader at UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon.

UWSP won the first game, 6-3, and the second game, 2-0.

In the first game, the Pointers scored six runs on 11 hits and they made one error. The Falcons had three runs on eight hits and made two errors. UWSP scored three in the fourth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth. The Falcons scored twice in the fourth and one in the ninth. Nathan Brom was 2-2 while Nick Reimler was 2-4. Corey Martinson was 1-3 with two RBIs. Brad Stokke was 1-3 with one RBI. Bruce Grandits started on the mound for the Falcons and took the loss. He worked six and two-thirds innings and allowed five runs, three were earned. He allowed eight hits, walked two and struck out two.

In the second game the Falcons were shutout, but had eight hits. They committed four errors. UWSP scored their two runs on seven hits and they made no errors. UWSP scored single runs in the third and sixth. Tim Johnson and Josh Eidem were both 2-4. Dan Morgan went the distance for the Falcons on the mound and took the loss. He allowed just one earned run. He walked two and struck out five.

Monday the Falcons host Gustavus Adolphus in a non-conference doubleheader at Ramer Field. Game time is 2:30 p.m.

Falcons Split at Oshkosh

The Falcons split a WIAC doubleheader at UW-Oshkosh Friday winning the first game, 7-3, but dropping the second, 19-7.

In the first game, the Falcons scored seven runs on nine hits and made no errors. Oshkosh had three runs on eight hits and they made three errors. The Falcons scored single runs in the third and ninth, three in the seventh and two in the eighth. Oshkosh scored single runs in the sixth, eighth and ninth. A.J. Burr was 2-5 with two runs scored with a homer and one RBI. Tim Johnson was 1-4 with one RBI. Corey Martinson was 1-2 with two runs scored, a double and one RBI. Jason Bachman was 1-3 with one RBI and Tim Johnson was 1-4 with one RBI. Brad Stokke was 1-5 with a run scored and one RBI. Dale Le Monds got the pitching win. He worked eight innings and allowed three earned runs. He walked four and struck out three.

In the second game, Oshkosh, now 17-3 overall and 3-1 in the WIAC, had 19 runs on 19 hits and they made two errors. The Falcons, now 12-10 overall and 1-3 in the WIAC, scored seven runs on 13 hits and made no errors. Oshkosh scored six runs in the first, four runs in the fifth and seventh, three in the third and single runs in the second and sixth. The Falcons scored twice in the seventh and sixth and single runs in the first, second and fourth. Nick Reimler was 3-4 with a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored. Burr was 1-3 with a run scored and one RBI. Lucas Chase was 1-2 with two RBIs. Nathan Brom was 1-2 with one RBI. Mike Harris took the loss on the mound. He worked just one-third of an inning and allowed four earned runs. He walked two. The Falcons used seven pitchers in the game that went seven innings.

The Falcons play another WIAC doubleheader at UW-Stevens Point on Saturday. That game starts at noon.

Bats Come Alive in Sweep of Gusties

The Falcon baseball team swept past Gustavus Adolphus with 11-4 and 12-9 victories on Tuesday afternoon at Ramer Field.

In the first game, the Falcon fell behind 2-0 before erupting for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good. With runners at second and third and no one out, Jason Bachman and Nick reimler each put perfect bunts down the third base line for infield hits and a tie ballgame. After a Tim Johnson fly out, A.J. Burr crushed a grand slam to right center to give the Falcons a 6-2 lead. The next batter, Scott DeWyre, went deep as well.

The Falcons added four more runs in the sixth for their final runs. Lucas Chase did most of the damage with a two-run double

Justin Everson pitched 4 2/3 innings for the win. He gave up two runs on four hits, walked three and struck out two.

In the second game, the Falcon bats were too much for the Gusties.

The Falcons led Gustavus Adolphus 11-2 after five before the Gusties scored seven times in the sixth to cut the lead to two.

The Falcons added an insurance run in the sixth to cement the victory.

Burr went deep again for the team, this time a three-run bomb in the fifth. Nate Brom added four RBIs.

Mike Harris pitched four solid innings for the victory. He allowed two runs on five hits, walked three, and struck out one.

The Falcons will return to conference play Friday when they travel to UW-Oshkosh on Friday and UW-Stevens Point on Saturday.

Falcons Bedeviled by Stout

The Falcon baseball team slipped back to .500 with a pair of losses Monday afternoon against UW-Stout at Ramer Field.

The Falcons opened WIAC play with 8-4 and 5-4 losses at the hands of the Blue Devils in front of a chilled and sparse crowd of 15.

In the first game, the Falcons got two-out rally in the first when Joe Schmidt doubled and scored on a Scott DeWyre single. DeWyre stole second and scored on a A.J. Burr hot shot up the middle.

However, Stout scored three in the second to take the lead from starter Bruce Grandits. Nick Kalina and Brock Meyer each had run-scoring doubles.

Down 4-2, the Falcons tied the score with single rus in the fifth and sixth, but the Blue Devils scored two in the seventh and ninth for the win.

Grandits pitched seven innings, allowing six runs on nine hits. He also had trouble getting ahead of Blue Devils hitters.

The Falcons outhit Stout 15-12 in the contest, but could not get the clutch basehit.

Matt Lunde pitched a complete game for the Blue Devil win.

The story was the same in round two as the Falcons could not find an answer for the Stout pitching staff.

This time, it was Scott Meyer shutting down the Falcons with four runs on nine hits. Meyer used a variety of off-speed pitches to keep the Falcons off-guard at the plate.

The Blue Devils scored all their runs off Dan Morgan. The freshman pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up five runs on six hits.

Down 5-3, the Falcons cut the lead in half when Schmidt smashed a homerun to left-center in the eighth inning.

The Falcons had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, but could only score a single run. With runners at second and third and one out, Corey Martinson's sacrifice fly scored Nate Brom. However, Jason Bachman flied out to right field to end the game.

The Falcons are now 9-9, 0-2 in the WIAC. They will play a pair of games with Gustavus Adolphus 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Ramer Field.

Falcon Baseball Wins Two

The Falcons improved their record to 9-7 with two impressive victories over Hamline on Friday afternoon at Ramer Field.

The Falcons cruised in both games, winning the first game 8-1 and the second game 10-2.

In the first game, the Falcons jumped on the Pipers early with a three-run surge in the first. With one out, Tim Johnson singled and scored on a Joe Schmidt double. Burr added a two-out base hit to score Schmidt, and Brad Stokke knocked in Burr with a double.

Defensively, four Falcons combined to scatter seven hits. Justin Everson pitched three scoreless innings to earn the win.

Scott DeWyre increased the lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning with a towering home run to left field. Corey Martinson put two more runs on the board with a two-out double.

In the second game, pitcher Dale LeMonds earned his fifth victory of the season, allowing two runs, one earned, through six inning of work. LeMond walked none and struck out five.

Leading the contest 2-1, the Falcons put the game out of reach in the fourth, erupting for seven runs. Johnson's bases loaded double and Schmidt's three-run bomb to center chased eventual losing pitcher Billy Diaz.

The Falcons begin their WIAC schedule tomorrow with a doubleheader against UW-Stout. First pitch is at noon.

Falcon Baseball Sweeps Concordia-Moorhead

Falcons run record to 7-7 with 7-4 and 10-4 victories over Concordia-Moorhead on Sunday.

In the first game, Dale LeMonds earned his fourth victory of the young season by going the distance, allowing four runs on seven hits, one walk and four strikeouts.

The Falcons broke a 3-3 tie with four runs in the top of the fifth. Shortstop Scott DeWyre led off with a double and scored on a Brad Stokke single. After Nate Brom singled and Corey Martinson walked to load the bases with one out, Josh Eidem knocked in a pair with a double. Joe Schmidt later walked with the bases loaded to score the final run.

Schmidt, Stokke, Martinson,and Tim Johnson each had a pair of hits while Martinson added three runs. The Falcons outhit the Cobbers 12-7.

In the second game, the Falcons got more good starting pitching as Dan Morgan went the full seven innings in the 10-4 victory. Morgan (1-1)gave up four runs, two of them earned on six hits, six walks, and four strikeouts. Over the last four games, all wins, the Falcon bullpen has not been used.

The Falcons scored six runs over the last two innings to get the win. A.J. Burr's two-run homer in the sixth inning put the Falcons up for good.

The Falcons smacked 16 hits in the contest. Schmidt and DeWyre each had three. Brom and Martinson each had a pair of hits.

The Falcons play their first game at Ramer Field on Friday against Hamline. They will play a pair of games starting at 2:30 p.m.

Falcons Top Northwestern Twice

The Falcons beat Northwestern, Minn., College, 5-2 and 16-0 Tuesday in Roseville, Minn. The Falcons raised their record to 5-7 on the season.

In the 5-2 win, Scott DeWyre was 2-4 with two RBIs, including a two-run homer in the fifth. Nathan Brom was 2-4 with two RBIs. Eric Bartholomew was 2-3 with one RBI and Tim Johnson was 2-4. The Falcons scored three times in the fifth and single runs in the fourth and seventh. The Falcons had 10 hits and committed two errors. Northwestern scored both runs in the first. They had four hits and one error. Dale Le Monds went the distance on the mound to improve his record to 3-0. He allowed the four hits and both runs were earned. He walked just one and struck out five.

The Falcons pounded out 17 hits in the 16-0 win. The Falcons scored four runs in the second and fifth innings, two in the first and six in the third. Northwestern had just one hit and made two errors. Joe Schmidt was 2-3 with a triple, a home run and three RBIs. Josh Bachman was 2-3 with a double, a homer and two RBIs. Johnson was 2-3 with an RBI and Brad Stokke was 2-4 with a double and two RBIs. DeWyre was 2-3 with three RBIs, Brom was 2-4 and Brian Bosch was 2-3 with two RBIs. Bruce Grandits went the distance on the mound to improve his record to 1-1 this year. He allowed just a leadoff double. He didn't walk a batter and struck out nine in the five-inning game.

The Falcons next play at Concordia-Moorhead on Sunday with the first pitch set for 1 p.m.

Falcons Lose to St. Thomas

April 3, 2000

The Falcons dropped an 8-7 decision to St. Thomas, Fla., University in the team's final game during their spring tripe.

St. Thomas raised its record to 24-10 while the Falcons fell to 3-7.

St. Thomas scored two runs in the ninth to get the win. They scored two runs ion the first, eighth and ninth innings and single runs in the fifth and seventh. The Falcons scored twice in the first and sixth innings and single runs in the second, third and fifth. The Falcons finished with seven runs on 10 hits while St. Thomas had 15 hits and three errors.

A.J. Burr led the Falcons going 2-3 at the plate with two RBIs. Tim Johnson was 1-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Josh Eidem took the loss on the mound to put his record at 1-1 for the season. He pitched just the final inning and allowed one earned run. He allowed two hits, walked one and struck out. Dan Morgan started and worked the first eight innings. He allowed 13 hits and seven earned runs. He walked four and struck out one.

Falcons Split With UM-Morris

March 31, 2000

The Falcons split a twin bill with UM-Morris on Thursday in Florida. The Falcons are now 3-6 overall and face St. Thomas University on Friday.

UMM won the first game, 19-8 and the Falcons took the night cap, 14-1.

In the first game, UMM scored seven runs in the first inning to take an early lead. They added five in the third, two in the fourth and seventh innings and three in the fifth. The Falcons scored single runs in the first and third innings, two in the sixth and four in the seventh. UMM had 13 hits and three errors and the Falcons had 17 hits and four errors. Brad Stokke was 2-2 with a run scored. Brian Bosch was 2-2 with two runs scored. Nathan Brom was 2-4 with two runs scored. Mike Harris started on the mound for the Falcons and took the loss. He worked just two-thirds of an inning. He allowed five runs, four earned, and three hits. He walked one and struck out one. The Falcons used four other pitchers in the game.

The Falcons rebounded in game two to take the win. They scored 14 runs on 15 hits and had three errors. UMM had five hits and committed four errors. UWRF scored two runs in the third and sixth innings, three in the fifth and seven in the seventh. UMM scored its only run in the third. Tim Johnson was 3-5 with two RBIs and he scored four times. Joe Schmidt was 2-3 with three RBIs, a triple and two runs. Scott DeWyre was 3-5 with one RBI and two runs. A. J. Burr was 3-4 with four RBIs and a double. Corey Martinson was 2-4 with a double, two runs scored and three stolen bases. Schmidt had a two-out, run-scoring triple in the third inning and Burr hit a two-out double that scored three runs in the sixth. Dale Le Monds went the distance on the mound and upped his record to 2-0 on the season. He faced just 27 batters and the run was unearned. He allowed five, hits, walked none and struck out three.

Falcons Lose Three Times

March 30, 2000

The Falcons lost three games on Tuesday and Wednesday during their spring trip to Florida.

On Tuesday the Falcons dropped a 1-0 decision to Trinity International and a 4-3 decision to Ottawa. On Wednesday Florida Memorial beat the Falcons, 8-4.

Trinity scored the only run in the third inning to get the win. The Falcons had five hits and Trinity eight and there were no errors in the game. Joe Schmidt was 2-3 with a double, A. J. Burr was 1-1 and Scott DeWyre was 1-2. Justin Everson started for the Falcons and took the loss. He worked two and two-thirds innings, allowed five hits and one earned run. He walked two and struck out one. Jason Bachman pitched four and one-third innings in relief. He allowed jsut three hits. He walked four and struck out two.

Ottawa hit a solo homer run in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Falcons, 4-3. The Falcons had three runs on five hits and made four errors while Ottawa had four runs on five hits and two errors. Schmidt was 2-3 with a double and a run scored. Josh Eidem was 1-2 with a stolen base. Bruce Grandits went the distance on the mound and took the loss. He allowed the four earned runs. He walked four and struck out five. The Falcons scored all three of their runs in the first. Ottawa scored two in the third and single runs in the first and seventh.

Wednesday Florida Memorial took an 8-4 win. Florida had 14 hits and one error while the Falcons had 13 hits and one error. Florida scored singel runs in the fifth and seventh innings, four in the sixth and two in the eighth. UWRF scored single runs in the third, sixth, seventh and ninth innings. Tim Johnson was 2-4 with a double. Eidem was 3-5 with a run scored. DeWyre was 1-5 with a run scored and Schmidt was 2-5 with two runs scored. Starting pitcher Ben Hoepner took the loss. He worked the first six innings and allowed five runs, two earned, on seven hits. He walked two and struck out two. The Falcons used five other pitchers.

The Falcons are scheduled to play UM-Morris twice on Thursday.

Falcons Lose Twice to Harvard

March 28, 2000

The Falcons lost twice to Harvard on Monday in games played in Florida.

The Falcons, now 2-2 overall, face Trinity College at 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday.

In the first game, Harvard took a 13-6 win. The Falcons had six runs on 12 hits and no errors. Harvard had 13 runs on 12 hits and they made one error. Harvard scored five runs in the second, one in the third, three in the fifth and six in the sixth. The Falcons scored single runs in the first and fourth and four in the third. Nick Reimler went 2-3 at the plate including a double and a run scored. Joe Schmidt was 2-3 with two doubles, three RBIs and a run scored. Josh Eidem was 3-4 with a one scored. Eric Bartholomew took the pitching loss. He worked three and one-third innings and allowed four earned runs. He allowed five hits, walked four and struck out two. Ben Hoepner started and worked two and two-thirds innings. He allowed five earned runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out two. Todd Zinck worked the final inning and allowed four earned runs and three hits.

In the second game Harvard took a 10-8 win. The Falcons had eight runs on eight hits and they committed one error. Harvard had 10 runs on 10 hits and they committed one error. Harvard scored one run in the first and fifth innings, two in the third and fourth and four in the sixth. UWRF scored one run in the second, two in the third and fifth innings and three in the sixth. Tim Johnson was 2-3 at the plate with a triple and one RBI. Brad Stokke had a double and two RBIs. Schmidt had a triple and two RBIs and Scott DeWyre went 2-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Dan Morgan went the distance on the mound. He allowed nine earned runs. He walked three and struck out five.

Falcons Open With Two Wins

March 27, 2000

The Falcons opened their 2000 season beating Florida Memorial twice on Sunday.

The Falcons won 12-4 and 7-4. Monday the Falcons face Harvard University in two games starting at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

In the team's 12-4 win on Sunday Dale Le Monds picked up the pitching win. He worked all seven innings and allowed just five hits. He struck out two and didn't walk a batter. He allowed just two earned runs. He did not allow a hit after the fourth inning. The Falcons scored 12 runs on 10 hits and they committed four errors. Florida Memorial scored four runs on five hits and they made three errors. The Falcons scored four times in the first, three in the seventh, two in the sixth and single runs in the second, third and fifth innings. Florida Memorial scored three in the first and one in the second. Tim Johnson went 3-4 at the plate with a double and one RBI. Joe Schmidt was 2-4 with two doubles and one RBI. Scott DeWyre got the Falcons off with a bang hitting a three-run homer in the first. He finished 2-4 with five RBIs.

In the second game pitcher Josh Eidem picked up the win in relief. He worked the final two and two-thirds innings and gave up just one hit. He walked two. The Falcons scored seven runs on 14 hits and had two errors and Florida Memorial had four runs on seven hits and they made seven errors. The Falcons scored two runs in the first, third and sixth innings and one in the fifth. Florida Memorial scored all four runs in the fifth off pitcher Mike Harris. Harris started the game and worked four and one-third innings. He allowed three earned runs and six hits. He struck out five and walked one.
