Falcons Prepare for Upcoming Swim Season
Oct. 9, 2009

By Charlie Korenchen
UWRF Sports Information

As the UW-River Falls swimming and diving teams prepare for the 2009 season there is a lot to look forward to.

The Falcons will be swimming at River Falls High School since the UWRF pool is closed due to old age and disrepair. The team is again being lead by Head Coach Bill Henderson who is in his eighth season at UWRF. The teams are excited and expecting to improve upon last year and make their way up the conference standings .

The River Falls women are poised to make great improvements on last year’s season. One of this year’s strongest swimmers could be junior Emily Stein. There are many other swimmers who have been performing well during early-season practices, including sophomore Tori Jambretz, and senior Alyssa Adair. Along with these upper classmen there is a very strong class of freshmen. Hannah Wiseman should make a big difference for the Falcons this year swimming the individual freestyle events. Sarah Koch has showed promise as an incoming freshman and is a very versatile swimmer.

The women will take their hard work they put in this offseason into WIAC action in hopes that they can reach fourth place or better in the WIAC championships. Another of the Falcons main goals this season is to have their first winning dual meet record in a long time. They will take on WIAC opponents Eau Claire and Oshkosh this year.

The men’s team has put in a lot of time working this offseason and hopes those efforts will pay off as they also try and improve up to fourth place or better in the conference. Just like the women the men’s team will also be looking to have a winning dual meet record. Their toughest competition in the conference looks to be Stevens Point as they are usually one of the nation’s best teams.
The men’s team also has a cast of strong swimmers that will hopefully lead them to a successful year. Senior Ty Campbell returns after being voted the team’s Most Inspirational in 2009. Along with Campbell the team will be lead by senior Sean Breneman. Junior twins Josh and Justin Anderson also look to be very strong swimmers and lead the team toward its goals. Kevin O’Brien is a senior who has not been able to swim the past couple years but looks forward to being a big part of the Falcon squad. The menalso have a strong incoming freshmen class who they hope will help them to success. Ray Carlos, swimming the breaststroke and individual medley races, is a key swimmer this season. Along with Carlos is freshman Mars Delgado who is a great sprint freestyler and breaststroker.

The Falcons will open their 2009-10 season on Oct. 17, when they travel to St. Mary's.

The Falcons will host the Falcon Invite, which will be at the University of Minnesota on Dec. 4-5. This meet is the pride of the Falcon teams. It is the largest swimming meet in the nation with over 500 athletes competing.

The Falcons will also be the hosts of the WIAC Championships from Feb. 11-13. This meet will also be at the University of Minnesota.
