Cross Country Teams Race at Midwest Regionals

The Falcon men’s cross country team placed 9th and the women’s team placed 20th at the NCAA DIII Midwest Regionals on Saturday.

The meet, which was held by UW- Oshkosh at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wis., hosted DIII cross country teams from throughout the Midwest. There were 39 participating schools in both the men’s 8 kilometer race and the women’s 6 kilometer races.

Abdi Hassan continued running well as he has all season, and came in first for the Falcon men with a time of 25:10 in the 8 kilometer race. Hassan placed 28th out of 282 participating runners. Hassan was named to the USTFCCCA All-Region Team for his impressive performance, completing the meet in the top 35. Coming in second for the Falcons was Chad Ernst, who placed 41st overall with a time of 25:30. Coming in third for River Falls was Richie Mark, who placed 66th overall with a time of 26:00. Next for the Falcons was Scott Bowman, who placed 77th overall with a time of 26:13. The final placing runner for River Falls was Nick Zeien, who completed the meet with a time of 26:22, placing him 88th overall. The Falcon pushers were Scott Degner and Jose Rojas, who completed the meet in 26:49 and 27:02 respectively. All of the placing Falcon runners, as well as the pushers, displayed a great deal of heart as they all topped their season high performances at the meet.

The Falcon men completed the meet with 300 points and a total time of 2:09:15.

Placing first overall in the meet was North Central College out of Ill., with 21 points and a total time of 2:02:34. Second in the meet was UW-La Crosse, with 105 points and a time of 2:04:59. Placing third in the meet was Washington University out of Saint Louis, with 118 points and a total time of 2:05:21.

Carly Eggert came in first for the Falcon women with a time of 22:44, placing her 34th out of 273 participating runners. Eggert was named to the USTFCCCA All-Region Team for completing the meet in the top 35. Crossing the finish line next for the Falcons was Leah Korf with a time of 23:23, placing her 64th overall. Third for River Falls was Katie Rydeen with a time of 25:15. Rydeen placed 152nd overall. Coming in fourth for the Falcons was Diana Moe, who completed the meet in 25:22 and placed 157th overall. The final placing runner for River Falls was Lindsay Knoebel with a time of 25:36. Knoebel placed 164th overall. Pushing for the Falcons was Bayli Maliszewski, with a time of 25:46. Eggert, Rydeen, Moe, Knoebel and Maliszewski all topped their previous season high performances at the meet.

The Falcon women completed the meet with 571 points and a total time of 2:02:20.

UW- Eau Claire placed first overall in the meet with 52 points and a time of 1:49:17. Placing second overall in the meet was Washington University, with 72 points and a time of 1:49:43. Third was UW- La Crosse, with 98 points and a total time of 1:51:15.

The regional meet is the last meet of the season for any runners that did not qualify for the DIII NCAA Championship Meet. The NCAA Championship Meet will be hosted by Bladwin-Wallace College in Ohio on Saturday.

Ernst Named WIAC Men's Cross Country
Scholar-Athlete

Falcon Chad Ernst has been named the 2009 WIAC men's cross country Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete.

"This is a great honor for Chad, the team, the cross country program and for UWRF as it took all these groups to help make it possible for him to receive this award," said Falcon Coach Keven Syverson. "He is the first male cc runner since Earl Blodgett in 1978 to receive this award. We know Chad is very deserving of this honor."

A senior from Richfield, Minn., Ernst boasts a perfect 4.00 grade point average and is majoring in conservation with a minor in criminal justice. He is a two-time United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic selection and a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll. Ernst has been recognized on UW-River Falls’ Dean’s List five times. He has received three academic scholarships and earned Freshman, Sophomore and Junior Merit awards.

Ernst, a team captain, finished 15th at the WIAC championship a season ago and secured All-Midwest Region honors in 2007. He holds the school record on an 8,000-meter course with a time of 24:55. He received his team ’s Rookie of the Year in 2006, Most Valuable Player in 2007 and Most Dedicated in 2008.

At this year's WIAC Meet he placed 28th overall with a time of 26:34, his best time this year.

Earlier this year, Ernst was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. He has volunteered for many UW-River Falls Student-Athlete Advisory Committee activities including, the Trick- or-Treat Food Drive, Soles for Souls, Kid’s Night Out and Community Involvement Day. Ernst has served as secretary of the Natural Resource Management Club, a crew boss in UW-River Falls’ Wildfire Fighting Crew and a desk assistant and recycling representative in various residence halls.

Ernst is also a member of the Falcon indoor and outdoor track & field teams and holds the teams' second fastest times in the indoor 5,000-meter and outdoor 10,000-meter runs.

The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Max Sparger, who served as commissioner of the Wisconsin State University Conference from July, 1971 - July, 1993.

In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.25 grade point average. In addition, he must be in his last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.

Cross Country Teams Compete in WIAC Meet; Hassan and Eggert Lead

The Falcon men’s cross country team placed 6th out of 9 in the 8 kilometer race, and the women’s team placed 7th out of 8 in the 6 kilometer race at the WIAC Cross Country Invitational hosted by UW-Whitewater on Saturday morning.

The men were led by the impressive freshman Abdi Hassan. Hassan placed 20th out of 99 participating runners with a time of 26:21. The time was Hassan’s best for an 8 kilometer race all season. Chad Ernst, who came in second for the Falcons, also topped his season best with a time of 26:34 in the meet. Ernst placed 28th overall. Crossing the finish line third for the Falcon men was Scott Degner with a time of 27:11, placing him 44th overall. Coming in fourth for UWRF was Nick Zeien, who completed the meet in 27:32 and placed 49th. The final placing Falcon runner was Richie Mark, who crossed the line at 27:45 and placed 51st. Not far behind was pusher Kyle Witherrite, who also completed the meet in 27:45. The final Falcon pusher was Jared Brandenburg with a time of 27:51. The Falcon men had 192 total points, and a total race time of 2:15:23.

Placing first in the meet was UW- La Crosse, a team that has displayed a dominating performance in each meet thus far. La Crosse had 26 points and a total time of 2:09:17. Coming in second was UW- Platteville with 64 points and a time of 2:10:30. The team placing third was UW- Stevens Point, tying Platteville with 64 points. However, Stevens Point had a greater total time with 2:10:42.

Carly Eggert placed first overall for the Falcon women with a time of 23:57 in the 6 kilometer race. This was the first meet of the season in which Eggert placed in front of fellow senior Leah Korf. Eggert placed 23rd out of 100 participating runners. However, Korf was trailing close behind and came in second for the Falcons. Korf’s time was 24:06, which placed her 26th overall. Completing the meet third for the Falcon women was Brittany Nordland with a time of 25:17. Norland placed 46th in the meet. Katie Rydeen completed the meet next for the Falcons with a time of 26:04. The time was Rydeen’s best of the season, and she placed 52nd overall. Close behind Rydeen was the last placing Falcon runner in the meet, Bayli Maliszewski, who crossed the finish line at 26:08. Maliszewski placed 54th overall. The pushers were Brianna Waldvogel and Lindsay Knoebel, who crossed the line one after the other. Waldvogel’s total time was 26:34, and Knoebel’s time was 26:37. The Falcons totaled 201 points and had a race time of 2:05:32.

UW- Eau Claire placed first in the meet with 29 points and a time of 1:53:10. Second place was awarded to UW- Lacrosse, with 57 points and a total time of 1:55:41. Coming in third was UW- Oshkosh, with 71 points and a time of 1:56:45.

The next meet for the Falcons is the NCAA Regionals, hosted by UW- Oshkosh. The meet will take place in Winneconne, Wis., at the Lake Breeze Golf Club on Saturday, Nov. 14. The meet will be the last race for any Falcon senior runners who do not qualify for the Nationals.

Falcons Race in Snow at the Lake Wissota Meet

The Falcon men’s cross country team placed second out of three participating teams, and the Falcon women were unable to qualify against five participating teams as too few runners finished the race at the Lake Wissota Meet hosted by UW-Eau Claire on Friday afternoon. The meet took place under poor weather conditions, with heavy snow falling throughout the entirety of the meet.

Indy Lijivall was the first Falcon runner to cross the finish line in the men’s 8 kilometer race, and the first non UW-Eau Claire runner to complete the meet. Lijivall placed 7th out of 33 runners during the meet. Lijivall completed the meet with a time of 28:52. The next Falcon runner to complete the meet was Neil Skoog, who completed the race in 29:03, placing him 9th overall. Following Skoog was Charles Collins, who came in 10th overall with a time of 29:22. Kevin Rengo placed fourth for the Falcons and came in 11th overall with a time of 29:30. The final placing runner for the Falcons was Tim Wurcherer who crossed the finish line shortly after Rengo. Wurcherer placed 12th overall with a time of 29:32. Despite the snow and cold temperatures, the Falcon men bunched together well to come in second place. The Falcons totaled 49 points in the meet.

Placing first in the meet was host UW-Eau Claire with 15 points, as the first 6 runners to complete the meet were Eau Claire Blugolds. Placing third would have been UW- Stout, but they did not qualify as too few runners were able to complete the meet.

Out of 64 participating runners in the meet, only three women were presently participating to represent the Falcons. Jacque Braemer led the Falcon women with a time of 22:23 in the 6 kilometer race and placed 29th overall. Coming in next in the meet, and for the Falcons, was Kathryn Krause. Krause completed the meet with a time of 22:33. Placing next in the meet and following Krause was Alyssa Rasmussen, who crossed the finish line at 22:49.

Host UW-Eau Claire placed first in the race with 32 points. UW-Lacrosse came in second with 33 points. Coming in third was the University of St. Thomas, with 70 points. The final placing team was UW-Stout with 100 points.

The next Falcon cross country meet will be the WIAC Meet. The WIAC meet will be hosted by UW-Whitewater on the Saturday, Oct. 31.

Falcons Race Tough Competition at Jim Drews/Tori Neubauer CC Invitational

The UWRF Falcon men placed 15th and the Falcon women placed 20th overall in the Drews/Neubauer Cross Country Invitational, hosted by UW- Lacrosse at the Maple Grove Country Club in West Salem, WI., on Saturday. The annual cross country meet is in honor of Jim Drews and Tori Neubauer, two former UW- Lacrosse All-American and National Champion runners, and features collegiate teams throughout the Midwest.

Chad Ernst led the Falcon men for the third consecutive meet, completing the race in 26:08, placing him 51st out of 462 participating runners. Following Ernst was Freshman Abdi Hassan, who continued his impressive debut year with the Falcons with a time of 26:13. Hassan placed 56th overall. Crossing the line third for UWRF was Richie Mark, who placed 85th overall with a time of 26:35. Scott Bowman came in fourth for the Falcons with a time of 26:50, placing him 107th overall. Crossing the finish line right after Bowman was Scott Degner, who completed the race in 26:51 and placed 108th. The Falcon pushers were Jose Rojas and Jared Brandenburg, who completed the meet in 27:09 and 27:19 respectively. The Falcons had a total time of 2:12:39 and 407 points.

Placing first overall in the meet was Wisconsin, with 32 points and a total time of 2:04:06. Second in the meet was the hosting UW- Lacrosse, with 49 points and a time of 2:05:02. Third in the meet was South Dakota State, with 92 points and a total time of 2:06:49.

Seniors Leah Korf and Carly Eggert lead UWRF and crossed the line first and second respectively for the Falcons for the third consecutive meet. Korf completed the 6 kilometer meet with a time of 23:20 and placed 50th out of 448 participating runners. Eggert’s time of completion was 23:36, which placed her 66th overall. Coming in third for the Falcons was Brittany Norland, who placed 133rd overall with a time of 25:00. Brianna Waldvogel came in fourth for UWRF with a time of 25:31, placing her 147th overall. Diana Moe was the final placing runner for the Falcons, crossing the finish like 153rd overall with a time of 26:02. The Falcon pushers were Lindsay Knoebel and Bayli Maliszewski. Knoebel completed the meet in 26:10, and Maliszewski completed the meet in 26:16. The Falcons completed the meet with a total time of 2:03:31.

UW- Eau Claire placed first overall in the meet, with 51 points and a cumulative time of 1:51:18. Nebraska Wesleyan placed second in the meet with 108 points and a total time of 1:52:52. Placing third overall in the meet was the host, UW- Lacrosse, with 130 points and a total time of 1:53:57.

The Falcons next competition is at the Lake Wissota Meet this upcoming Friday. Races begin at 10 a.m.

Cross Country Place Well at Blugold Open

The UWRF men and women’s cross country teams placed third and tenth respectively in the Blugold Open, hosted by UW-Eau Claire, on Friday afternoon.

Chad Ernst led the Falcon men for the second meet in a row, this time with a time of 26:22 in the eight kilometer race at the Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax, WI. Ernst, who placed ninth out of 270 participating runners, was a key component in the Falcon men placing third out of 18 colleges at the meet.

Freshman Abdi Hassan was the second Falcon runner to cross the finish line, placing 15th overall with a time of 26:34. Not far behind Hassan was Sophomores Richie Mark and Scott Bowman. Mark placed 17th overall with a time of 26:40. Bowman came in fourth for the Falcons and placed 17th overall with a time of 26:44. Coming in fifth for the Falcons and 28th overall was Senior Scott Degner with a time of 27:02. The Falcon pushers were Jose Rojas who completed the meet in 27:10 and placed 33rd overall, and Nick Zeien who placed 53rd overall after running the meet in 27:30.

The Falcon men had a total time of 2:13:22 and 88 points. Coming in first place was the host team, UW- Eau Claire, with 46 points and a total time of 2:11:31. The University of St. Thomas placed second, with 50 points and a time of 2:10:54.

Seniors Leah Korf and Carly Eggert placed first and second respectively for the Falcons for the third meet in a row. Korf completed the women’s six kilometer race in a time of 23:47, placing her 32nd out of 300 participating runners. Eggert crossed the finish line 41st overall with a time of 24:09. Placing third and fourth for UWRF were Freshmen Jenna Dean and Brittany Norland. Dean ran the meet in a time of 24:55, which placed her 56th overall. Norland placed 63rd overall with a time of 25:12. Sophomore Brianna Waldvogel came in fifth for the Falcon women with a time of 25:29, which placed her 72nd overall. The UWRF pushers were Diana Moe, who completed the race in a time of 26:12 and was 91st overall, and Lindsay Knoebel who placed 93rd overall with a time of 26:17.

The Falcon women had a total time of 2:03:32 and 264 points. Placing first in the women’s meet as well as the men’s was host UW-Eau Claire, with 29 points and a time of 1:53:39. Second in the meet was The University of Minnesota-Duluth with 60 points and a time of 1:54:03. Winona State placed third with 112 points and a time of 1:57:08.

The next meet for the Falcon cross country teams is in two weeks, on Saturday, October 17th at the Jim Drews Invitational. The meet is hosted by UW-Lacrosse, and races begin at 10 a.m. in West Salem, WI.

Cross Country Teams Run at Griak

The Falcon women's cross country team placed 21st out of 37, and the men's team placed 12th out of 35 participating colleges, at the Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota at the Les Bolstad Golf Course on Saturday.

The Falcon women placed 21st out of 37 in the meet with 660 points and a total time of 130:44 in the six kilometer race.

Leading the Falcon women for the second meet in a row was senior Leah Korf. Korf placed 45th out of 500 participating runners, putting her in the top 10th percentile of runners for the meet. Korf's time for the meet was 24:06.

Following Korf was fellow senior Carly Eggert, who placed 81st overall with a time of 24:37. Placing third for the Falcons and 167th overall, with a time of 26:53, was Brianna Waldvogel. Ashley Graef crossed the line fourth for the UWRF women with a time of 27:32, placing her 183rd overall.

Not far behind Graef was Tanya Thompson, who placed 184th overall after running the meet in 27:34. The Falcon pushers were freshmen Lindsay Knoebel and Bayli Maliszewski, who ran the meet in 27:40 and 27:59 respectively. Placing first overall in the meet was UW-La Crosse with 98 points and a total time of 117:12. Placing second was UW-Oshkosk with 112 points and a time of 116:26. Third overall was UW-Eau Claire with 117 points and a time of 117:13. The results show the great deal of competitiveness that is currently taking place in the WIAC.

The Falcon men tied for 12th place with Augsburg with 373 points and a total time of 138:14 in the eight kilometer race. There was a total of 35 teams participating in the meet.

Senior and Academic-All American Chad Ernst led UWRF with a time of 27:07, placing him 46th out of 370 participating runners.

Following Ernst was Scott Bowman, who placed 61st overall, with a time of 27:24. Richie Mark placed third for the Falcons and 77th overall with a time of 27:39. Placing fourth for UWRF and 88th overall was Scott Degner, with a time of 27:55. Fifth for the Falcons and 101st overall was Jose Rojas, who completed the race with a time of 28:07.

Pushing for the Falcon men was Nick Zeien and Kyle Witherrite. Zeien completed the meet in 28:27, and Witherrite finished with a time of 28:47.

The top three teams for the meet were UW-La Crosse with 48 points and a time of 130:12, UW-Platteville with 81 points and a time of 131:57, and Emory University with 113 points and a time of 132:12.

The Falcons upcoming meet is Friday at the Blugold Open, hosted by UW-Eau Claire at the Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax. The women's six kilometer race begins at 4 p.m., and the men's 8eight kilometer race begins at 5 p.m.

Cross Country Teams Begin Season at Luther

The Falcon Men and Women’s Cross Country teams placed third and fifth respectively in the Luther All-American Invitational, hosted by Luther College in Decorah, IA.

Out of the eight teams participating in the Luther All-American Invitational, the Falcon men placed third with 73 points. Freshman runner Abdi Hassan from Burnsville, MN led the Falcons with a time of 21:01, a very impressive performance for his Falcon debut. Hassan placed third overall in the race, and kept an average pace of 5:15 per mile. Senior and Academic All-American Chad Ernst was not far behind Hassan, placing fourth overall with a time of 21:03 and an average pace of 5:16. Following Ernst was Jose Rojas, who ran the five mile race with a time of 21:28, placing him 12th overall. Rojas maintained a pace of 5:22 throughout the meet. Richie Mark placed 25th with a time of 21:28 and a pace of 5:28. Jared Brandenburg placed fifth for the Falcons and 29th overall with a time of 21:57 while maintaining an average pace of 5:29. The pushers for the Falcon men were Neil Skoog who placed 41st overall, and Alex Zeien who placed 45th. The total time for the top five placing Falcon men was 107:36.

In the men’s race, UW- Lacrosse placed first in the meet with 46 points. Luther College placed second with 72 points. Hamline University placed fourth with 110, Iowa Central Community College placed fifth with 126, Luther Alum placed 6th with 129 points, UW- Eau Claire placed 7th with 150 points, and Grand View University placed eighth with 233 points.

The Falcon women placed fifth in the meet with 153 points. Seniors Leah Korf and Carly Eggert placed first and second for the Falcons. Korf placed eighth out of the 146 participating runners with a time of 19:45 and an average pace of 6:21. Eggert was 16th overall with a time of 19:58 and a pace of 6:26. The three other runners who placed in the top five for UWRF were all freshman. Brittany Nordland led the freshman runners with a time of 21:23 and a pace of 6:53. Following Nordland was Tanya Thompson, who placed 44th overall with a time of 22:03 and an average pace of 7:06. Not far behind was Laurel Corbett, who placed 45th overall with a time of 22:13 and a pace of 7:09. The pushers were Diana Moe who placed 46th with a time of 22:14 and a pace of 7:09, and Brianna Waldvogel, who placed 47th overall with a time of 22:15 and a pace of 7:10. The total time for the top five placing Falcon women was 105:21.

UW- Lacrosse placed first in the women‘s race as well as the men‘s, this time with 41 points. Luther College placed second with 45 points, UW- Eau Claire placed third with 98 points, Hamline University placed fourth with 101 points, Iowa Central Community College placed 6th with 165 points, Grand View University placed 7th with 170 points and Luther Alum placed eighth with 207 points.

The next meet for the Falcons is on Saturday, the 26th at the Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. Races begin at 9 a.m.

Falcons Open Season at Luther Inviational on Saturday

The Falcon men and women’s cross country teams are preparing to begin the 2009 season at the Luther Invitational on Saturday in Decorah, Iowa.

The Falcons are led by Coaches Keven Syverson and Scott Sekelsky, both entering their third year. Syverson is the head coach of the men’s team. They are co-head coaches of the women’s squad. Syverson was recently named the interim head coach of the Falcon men’s and women’s track & field teams. Sekelsky is an assistant track & field coach.

Last season the Falcon women placed 13 out of 43 at the NCAA Midwest Regional, while the men placed 12th out of 39. Both teams placed sixth at the WIAC Meet.

The Falcon women will be running without Becca Jordahl, an All-American honor-winning athlete who qualified for last season’s Division III cross country National Championship Meet, where she placed 14th out of 297 runners. Also not returning to the Falcons this season are letter winners Amy Follman, Tiffany Gardner, Ellie Maione and Christine Peters.

Letter winners returning for the Falcon women are Lauren Besson, Carly Eggert and Leah Korf. The three runners are also the only seniors on this year’s roster. Also returning to the team this year are Amanda Anacker, Jaque Braemer, Natalie Conrad, Sara Ermisch, Alyse Good, Ashley Graef, Bridget Holmes, Sandra Kirchner, Brianna Waldvogel and Amanda Winquist.

Freshman joining the 2009 Falcon women are Jenifer Biss (Minnetonka), Laurel Corbett (Park Falls), Jenna Dean (Brainerd), Lindsay Knoebel (Jefferson), Bayli Maliszewski (Arcadia), Diana Moe (Watson), Brittany Nordland (Pine Island), Anna Peissig (Abbotsford), Alyssa Rasmussen (Delano), and Tanya Thompson (Maribel).

The Falcon men have lost six letter winners this offseason in Tony Casci, Jake Cavanaugh, Kyle Donovan, Jason Phillipi, Kyle Witherrite and Taylor Zinnel.

However, there are 11 letter winning runners returning to the Falcons this season. The senior letter winners returning to the team this year are Scott Degner, Shad Gausmann and Academic All-American Chad Ernst. Last year Ernst set a school record with a time of 24:56 set at the Oshkosh Invitational.

The other letter winners returning to the team are Scott Bowman, Charles Collins, Mike Merritt, Kevin Rengo, and Alex and Nick Zeien. Also returning to the team are Ben Anderson, Indy Liljevall, Richie Mark, Alex Nichols, Tony Orlando, Jose Rojas and Kyle Witherrite.

The incoming class of runners that have joined the 2009 Falcon men are Jared Brandenburg (Independence), Abdi Hassan (Burnsville), Tim O’Brien (Hastings), Derrek Pederson (Roberts), Race Rolling (Osceola) and Neil Skoog (Hudson).

The annual WIAC meet will be Nov. 1 and is hosted by UW-Whitewater. The NCAA Midwest Regionals will be Nov. 14 and hosted by UW-Oshkosh. The NCAA National meet will be Nov. 21 in Cleveland, Ohio.
