St. Croix Valley Summer Theatre on Hiatus until 2010
We, the Theatre Faculty of SCVST have made the difficult decision to take a two-year hiatus from production of St. Croix Valley Summer Theatre. However, we want to reassure our supporters that we plan to be back, beginning in the summer of 2010.
The Kleinpell Fine Arts building, where we are housed, is scheduled for a major ventilation renovation project (the entire building will be a construction zone!) for the summers of 2008 and 2009. Originally, we had planned to produce a season during the summer of 2008. However, as the project nears, it has become clear through a series of discussions with the Project Manager and others from Facilities, that because the building, including the CSTA offices, will be vacated for both summers, a 2008 summer season would be counterproductive to our program. While it is true that there are ways to have a one-show season, when we investigated the possibilities of other performance spaces around the community we did not feel these options were financially or logistically workable for the program.
Interestingly, as the Theatre Faculty entered into discussions we came to view this situation, not as a problem to be solved with a short term, band-aid type of solution, but rather as an opportunity to take a hiatus to improve our summer program. During a hiatus we could do what we have never been able to do as well as we might have wanted in the 41 years of SCVST: really, really, have time to think and plan.
It is our goal to return from our hiatus for the summer of 2010, with a vital summer theatre program that will be situated to operate well into the future. We envision a well-planned program; one that is sustainable long after the current faculty is gone. We envision a program that is an asset to the University, our Theatre program, and the St. Croix Valley community. We envision a program that current students, high school students, community members and faculty will want to participate in.
We do understand that there will be some disappointed supporters, but we want you to know that we have given this decision much thought and feel strongly that by taking a hiatus we can provide the University and larger community with a stronger summer theatre program than ever before.
Again, we want you to know that we are continually grateful for our supporters and your many contributions over the years. We will return a revitalized and renewed summer theatre in 2010 and we will be “holding your seats” for you!
