Personal Profile
Dr.
Shepherd retired from the Physics Department in the summer of 2000. He returned
temporarily for the Fall 2000 semester, as a Sabbatical replacement for Dr.
Wilson.
Dr. Shepherd spent 1995-96 on Sabbatical studying astronomy and numerical
analysis at the University
of Minnesota. His
research was programming a Monte Carlo Model
of light scattering in dust clouds surrounding stars. In addition, he
produced a fourth edition of his text "Data Analysis." He was also
the editor of the "Wis Phys" Newsletter
which was mailed to all high school physics teachers in Wisconsin and to the
100 closest high schools in Minnesota. He was the chief advisor to the
pre-engineering students and is also the designer of the Richard D. Swensen Sundial.
Professor
Shepherd has his B.Sc. and Ph.D. from Imperial
College, London University.
Despite having spent half his life in America he still has an English
accent! In addition to UW-River Falls, he taught at Imperial
College and Case-Western
Reserve University
in Cleveland, Ohio. He was selected by the students for
"Outstanding Science Teacher" Award in 1997.
