Speaker Looks Back at McCarthyism

OCT. 7, 2008--The University of Wisconsin-River Falls Edward N. Peterson Lecture Series presents an expert on McCarthyism on Oct. 15 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Abbott Concert Hall of the Kleinpell Fine Arts on campus. Professor Richard Fried of the department of history, University of Illinois at Chicago, will present "Joseph McCarthy and His Times: 50 Years Later." A reception at 3:30 p.m. precedes the presentations. The event is free and open to the public.

A renowned scholar on Wisconsin Sen. Joseph McCarthy and his campaign to rid the United States of communism, Fried has published several books on the man and his era, including "Men Against McCarthy" (Columbia University Press), "Nightmare in Red: The McCarthy Era in Perspective" (Oxford University Press), and "The Russians Are Coming! The Russians are Coming! Pageantry and Patriotism in Cold War America" (Oxford University Press), as well as numerous journal articles, book chapters and review essays.

As a professor of 20th century U.S. history focused on the mid-century the culture and politics of the cold war, and the making of modern America, Fried provides enlightenment and insight on the era associated with the infamous senator from Wisconsin.

Fried is the recipient of the Shirley A. Bill Teaching Award in the department of history at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has also received two Fulbright fellowships as a senior lecturer--one in 1998 at the Universidad de Alcala de Henares and Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and one in 2006 at the Vietnam National University in Hanoi.

Edward N. Peterson (depicted in campus mural, left) taught history at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls from 1954 to 2005. Among the many courses he enjoyed teaching were those focused on the 20th century, especially World War I, World War II, and the Cold War. Professor Peterson wrote 10 books on Germany in the 20th century and devoted his scholarly life to issues surrounding war, peace and power. To honor his memory and to address contemporary issues, the UWRF history and philosophy department established the series in his name to emphasize the issues at the center of his academic life: war and peace, abuses and limits of power, and the struggle for democracy.

The event is sponsored by the Endowment Fund of the Edward N. Peterson Lecture Series, the UWRF history and philosophy department, and the UWRF College of Arts and Sciences. The series brings a major scholar to the campus each year, and its funding endowment is made possible by the generous donations of students, alumni, faculty and friends collected over many years.
