UW-RF Journalism Department Receives Grant

JULY 23, 2008--The UW-River Falls journalism department has received a grant for $2,000 from the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Foundation. The UWRF grant was one of six that the WBA awarded through its Educational Support Grant Program for 2008.

The grant is for 10 digital audio recorders to use in gathering news for the university's campus radio station WRFW-FM 88.7, an affiliate of Wisconsin Public Radio.

"It's gratifying to see professional broadcasters supporting college programs at a time when higher education must stretch every dollar," says journalism Professor Sandra Ellis. "These new recorders will make it possible for our reporters to get 'real-world' experience in preparation for their careers."

The Educational Support Grant Program was created by the WBA Foundation in 2000 to award up to $10,000 annually to assist nonprofit college and technical school broadcast education programs in acquiring equipment, hardware, software and/or other teaching materials necessary to conduct broadcast education programs and promote careers in broadcasting.

The WBA Foundation has provided $87,530 in grants in this program. This is the fourth year UWRF has received a WBA grant, for a total of $9,033 since 2003.
