Hospitality Industry 'Green' Luncheon Set in May

APRIL 25, 2008--Sustainability issues for the hospitality and tourism industry in the St. Croix Valley will be explored over a noon luncheon on May 14.

Sponsored by the St. Croix Valley Regional Tourism Alliance, "Greening the Tourism Industry in the St. Croix Valley" is from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at Stillwater's Water Street Inn.

Coinciding with National Tourism Week, the luncheon will explore such topics as making a business sustainable, tourism state certification programs, and marketing and promoting green tourism businesses to visitors.

Presenters include Sarah Pischer, tourism development specialist at the Wisconsin Department of Tourism; Professor Kelly Cain, director of the UWRF St. Croix Institute for Sustainable Community Development and the UWRF Wildlife, Recreation and Nature Tourism certificate program; and Washington County natural resource specialist Rusty Schmitt.

Luncheon workshop coordinators Mark Kinders of UWRF and Sheryl E-Marshall of Pressenter in Hudson said the luncheon will expand ongoing sustainability discussions in the valley to the hospitality and tourism industry.

"Residents of the St. Croix Valley and throughout our region are increasingly passionate about ensuring they are living in a 'green' world," Kinders said. "They're seeking experiences from communities, events, attractions and businesses that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and stewardship of natural resources."

According to E-Marshall, the discussion will provide an overview of emerging trends and point businesses to success stories and green certification procedures. She said the luncheon also will be used to determine certification or marketing areas that businesses are particularly interested in, with the intent to hold a focused workshop on those topics in the fall.
