Student Accounting Society Offers Tax HelpBy Brian Hogenson These tax help sessions are something the Accounting Society thought of last year but did not see through to fruition. "It was one of my goals to follow through on that this year," said Rosalie Flatland, president of the UWRF Accounting Society. Sign-up sheets for the student volunteers have indicated that 10-15 students will be assisting with the tax preparation. They are prepared to help about 30 people with their taxes. While the Accounting Society is coordinating the event, many of the volunteers are from Steve Dewald's tax class. Dewald, who is a director of the Small Business Development Center at UWRF, said this is a chance to see how a tax return is prepared from the ground up, which is something you cannot experience by plugging numbers into an electronic tax program. Flatland said it will be good practice and experience for the volunteers, as many of them are accounting students who will be graduating in the next couple of years. Flatland added that the volunteers will not be simply filling out tax forms for people, but providing assistance to help people file their own returns. "We're hoping to help people get a start on doing their own in future years," Flatland said. The help sessions will take place on three nights in March: March 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. in room 224, South Hall; March 22 and March 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Alumni Room of South Hall. The help sessions are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information contact Rosalie Flatland at rosalie.flatland@uwrf.edu . -30-
