Global Kids Classes Offer Unique OpportunityAUG. 23, 2006--Classes designed to immerse elementary students in several languages and cultures through songs, games and hands-on activities will be offered on campus this fall by the University of Wisconsin-River Falls outreach office. The Global Kids program meets once per week over eight-weeks. Classes in Chinese, Spanish or German for elementary school-age children are offered. The fee is $80 for eight weeks plus a $5 materials fee. Chinese will be offered on Mondays, Sept. 18 to Nov. 6, from 4 to 4:45 p.m. at Zaney Janey's Activity Center, 208 S. Main St., River Falls. Spanish will be offered on Mondays, Sept. 18 to Nov. 6, from 4 to 4:45 p.m. in the Regional Development Institute (RDI) building on the UW-RF campus. German will be offered on Thursdays, Sept. 21 to Nov. 9, from 4 to 4:45 p.m. in the Regional Development Institute (RDI) building on the UW-RF campus. The classes are co-sponsored by Zaney Janey's Activity Center and the UW-RF outreach office. At the end of the eight-week session, students will receive a CD of basic vocabulary words they have learned. Additional eight-week sessions will begin in January, offering students a chance to build on their knowledge from the fall sessions. Instructors are chosen for the unique blend of teaching and language abilities. Educators note that learning a second language has multiple benefits including enhanced brain development, improved ear for listening, improved cognitive and academic skills, and an improved understanding of the English language. Learning a foreign language helps children develop a global attitude and greater awareness for other cultures as well, according to the course sponsors. The UW-RF outreach office provides lifelong learners with academic and professional development programs that are practical, flexible, convenient, and affordable.
