The delegation met with educators, school administrators, business leaders, government officials and others in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan. "UW-River Falls has a strong presence in Asia," said Betz. The group also visited alumnus Wong How Man, recipient of the 2002 UW-RF Distinguished Alumni Award and the president and founder of the Chinese Exploration Research Society. "Our objectives were fully realized and even surpassed," said Betz. "The delegation set out to strengthen the relationships that UW-RF has with numerous Asian education institutions and to develop greater student and faculty exchange and research opportunities between these intuitions and UW-RF. We returned with specific collaboration agreements as well as a wealth of opportunities to be developed in the immediate future." Academic institutions that the group visited included the University of Hong Kong and Nagasaki University in Japan as well as Shih Hsin University and Shih Chien University in Taiwan, and Zhejiang Education Institute in Hangzhou, China, with which the UW-RF has existing exchange agreements among others. UW-RF also has partnerships with Siebold University, Fukouka Jo Gakuin University and the Guy Healy Agency, all in Japan. The group was able to visit the 1872 home of Hu Xueyan, a Hangzhou businessman who made his fortune in herbal medicine among other endeavors, which opened as a house museum last year.
