UW-RF Students Attend National Conference
APRIL 14, 2006--In the University of Wisconsin-River Falls' fifth year
at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, 19 students participated
in oral presentations and poster sessions throughout the conference.
Presentations from 1,900 students represented 280 institutions nationwide
at this year's site, the University of North Carolina Asheville.
The mission of NCUR is to promote undergraduate research, scholarship
and creative activity done in partnership with faculty or other mentors
as a vital component of higher education"
Students who represented UW-RF include:
Wisconsin:
Appleton: James Grosek, a senior biology student, presented work titled,
"Artificial Tissues Developmentof Trophoblast Cells on Three-dimensional
Scaffolds."
Cambridge: Charles Packard, a senior biotechnology student, presented
work titled, "A Molecular Genetic Screen for Xenopus Proteins that
Bind to Hermes Reveals a Novel Interaction with the Cell Cycle Control
Protein, Cyclin A1."
Eau Claire: Tim Pearson, a sophomore biology student, presented work titled,
"Primary Nervous Tissue Growth and Potential Development in 3D Cultures."
Osceola: Kyle Thompson, a junior computer science and information systems
student, presented work titled, "Semantic Networks Relations as Nodes
Allowing Relational Hierarchy, Abstraction and Instantation."
River Falls: Jessica Chavey, a senior biology student, presented work
titled, "Toward the Synthesis of (-) –Incarvilline and (-)
–Incarvillateine."
Michael Salmela, a senior biology student, presented work titled, "Development
of an Acute Neural Culture System to Study Neurite Initiation."
Rosholt: Lee Schulz, a senior agricultural business student, presented
work titled, "Effectiveness of Price Risk Management Tools for Wisconsin
Fat Cattle Producers."
Somerset: Katherine Phalen, a senior biology student, presented work titled,
"The Synthesis of Metz-Chloro- and Meta-bromo- Analogs of Capsaicin:
Potential New Analgesic Agents."
Sratford: Stacy Karl, a senior math student, presented work titled, "A
Comparison of Pre-Service Teacher Expectations with Realities Experienced
by Newer Teachers."
Superior: Caroline Martin, a senior biology student, presented work titled.
"Long Term 3-dimensional Cultures of HEK-293 Cells demonstrate Clear
Evidence of Tissue-like Differentiation."
Verona: Kendra Scudder, a senior biology student, presented work titled.
"Estrogen induced Sexual Abnormalities: A Genetic Model for Assessing
Estrogenic Pollutants in the Environment."
Whitewater: Victoria Held, a senior chemistry student, presented work
titled, "Design and Synthesis of TRPV1 Antagonisits: Probing the
D-Region Binding Site."
Minnesota:
Buffalo: Mindy Johnson, a senior biology student, presented work titled,
"Long Term 3-dimensional Cultures of HEK-293 Cells demonstrate Clear
Evidence of Tissue-like Differentiation."
Maple Grove: Anne Beckman, a junior majoring in teaching English to speakers
of other languages, presented work titled, "A Comparison of Pre-Service
Teacher Expectations with Realities Experienced by Newer Teachers."
Mazeppa: Joshua Betcher, a senior agriculture engineering technology student,
presented work titled, "The Financial Effects of Linking Cash Grain
Farms with Dairy Farms to Utilize Nutrient Resources."
Oakdale: Kathleen Barrett, a senior political science student, presented
work titled, "Keynesian and Supply-side Fiscal Policy: Is One More
Effective?"
Prior Lake: Tory Schaaf, a sophomore biology student, presented work titled,
"Primary Nervous Tissue Growth and Potential Development in 3D Cultures."
St. Paul: Michael Waldt, a senior chemistry student, presented work titled,
"Determination of the Protein Content of Isolated Trichomes from
Arabidopsis thaliana."
West Concord: Carissa Kasper, a senior math student, presented work titled,
"The FaceBook Phenomena: Uses and Abuses on a College Campus."
